Living in Australia for several years, I became a massive F45 fan. It introduced me to HIIT, is a ton of fun, fosters fantastic community, and helped me get into the best shape of my life. I LOVE IT. Returning to San Francisco, I was sad to say goodbye to F45, but then earlier this year, a studio finally arrived in San Francisco...sadly, just weeks before Shelter In Place shut down indoor workouts for the foreseeable future. Last week, I received an email that F45 North Beach was starting up classes again...inside a parking garage. Didn't sound terribly appealing, but after going months without a great workout, I figured I'd try anything at this point. IT WAS AWESOME! First and foremost, the workouts are as good as ever. Serious HIIT (high intensity interval training) with a great mix of building strength and serious cardio. I've always loved the variety of exercises (no day is ever the same) and the interesting compound movements. It is a challenging workout, but can be modified for absolutely any fitness level. It felt fantastic to finally have some weights in my hands again, and they've done a great job of creating top-notch workouts that utilize a more limited set of equipment and space. As far as the setup goes, it has got to be the best 'outdoor' workout you are going to find in the city! The parking garage is actually a great place to train. It is above ground, not that busy and the studio is in a closed off section, so there aren't any cars constantly passing by. There is plenty of space to spread out and excellent air flow, but you are sheltered from the wind. Plus the roof over your head will be vital once the rainy season arrives. (It's a way better setting than the park workouts I've been to.) They have essentially built a brand new outdoor studio. They completely carpeted the floor, laid out mats and installed covered fencing for privacy. You will instantly forget that you are in a parking structure. There are very strong COVID protocols and I have very low worry about working out here. There is great spacing, everyone is screened before entering and 100% of people wear masks. All of your equipment is cleaned and laid out at your station before you arrive and it is cleaned again at the end of the workout. Finally, Lewis and Josh are great trainers and great guys. They help deliver a safe and fantastic workout and invaluable sense of normalcy at a time when both of those things have been scarce. They are busting their butts to make a new small business work during these incredibly challenging times and I encourage you to check out what they have to offer!

Luckily, intro drop-in classes were 2 for $35 (though my trip ended before I could do another class), $4 for wraps, $5 for glove rentals. Not too shabby given the gym is spacious, open, clean and welcoming. The front is a coffee shop so I was confused at first. There is ample room to wait, place your items in cubbies and use their clean locker rooms prior to class. You are also welcome to hop in to warm up but they will warm you up and make you question whether that in itself was the workout. Had a great class with Coach Paulo -- he trained with us and showed us a bit of his beast mode. Since most folks had established partners, I was able to work with him and he took the time to ensure none of us were left behind. We practiced with group drills around the bags, footwork, endurance and partner drills on the bags, ultimately ending with abs. One point I really enjoyed is that he was so welcoming to southpaws, as he had initially trained as one in his early days. He also worked with each of us and gave us tips to improve our form, which is very important. My entire experience was pleasant (except for my legs and breath giving out) and our class size being smaller than the previous really helped. I look forward to going back to The Park Gym in a heartbeat when I'm in town.

I love that there are separate cardio and strength days--it keeps things balanced and never boring. Compared to OTF, F45 feels more well-rounded. I do sometimes miss machines, so I'll take a day or two to hit the gym, but F45 is my main workout. This location is conveniently located close to 280/101. It's spacious, clean, the equipment is well maintained and the coaches are always upbeat and supportive. The unlimited pass is also flexible and lets you visit other studios which is convenient when I'm running late from work or traveling. I saw this as a really great way to launch my fitness journey and kick-start a new me! After a few email exchanges, I worked with Jenn P. to set me up for the 6-weeks. She also took some measurements / pictures and loaded me up with information on how to eat and how to prepare for the challenge with EPIC. I worked hard and showed up to classes 5 days a week and ate according to the meal plan. I really enjoyed the classes and I loved how encouraging all of the instructors were during the challenge. All of the instructors were so friendly and really encouraged me to extend myself a little more or push a little harder and I really think that was key in my workouts. I mean, who doesn't work harder when people are rooting for them? I didn't really lose any weight for this challenge, but it wasn't really my goal to. What i did get was a new-found appreciation for workouts that challenge you and are super fun, but don't leave you feeling like you've been hit by a bus. I also accomplished two major things during my 6 weeks - being able to complete the traverse down and back again and make it to the top of the rope climb. Feeling super positive about what is to come in the next 6 weeks of my fitness journey, but I can tell you that this is the lowest body fat percentage I've been at in a WHILE! :)

This is a place where, in my experience, you either feel like you belong or you don't. There were times I felt judged, uncomfortable, and honestly more bullied than supported. The membership situation was the final straw. I completed the 3-month agreement I signed up for and immediately told him I did not want to continue. I wasn't trying to cancel early or get out of anything. The 30-day cancellation policy came up when we discussed going month-to-month AFTER my original 3 months. He now insists everything was made clear, but if I'm being charged a fourth payment on something sold to me as a 3-month agreement, clearly there was a lack of clarity somewhere. What made it worse was the way the owner spoke to me when I questioned it. I found his responses extremely disrespectful and condescending. Apparently, asking a reasonable question about my own account warranted being reminded about the discount I received and bringing my mom into the conversation because her card was on file. At some point, you'd think the business would speak to the actual member instead of the cardholder. I supported this business, paid my membership, and came back after years away. I didn't expect special treatment, but I did expect basic respect. Unfortunately, the way this was handled made it very clear that once you're no longer a paying member, the relationship seems to matter a lot less. Definitely not the way I expected things to end.

After a pre-call with the owner to discuss my golf goals, I signed up for the monthly subscription. Upon my first visit, I was surprised to learn that my trainer doesn't play golf and doesn't have extensive experience training golfers, but rather specializes in post-natal training for new mothers. The onboarding email told me to bring a 7-iron to my session for swing analysis, but I was informed onsite that I wouldn't need it, as they don't do swing assessments at the Hayes Valley location (maybe they do at other locations). My assessment used none of the technology showcased in this video: https://www.performforgolf.com/how-it-works and had nothing golf-specific. Just some basic stretches and ordinary dumbbell exercises. Aside from the golf branding, the only aspect of the gym that appeared tailored to golf was access to the Titleist TPI mobile app. They highlight that their trainers are TPI certified; however, in researching the program, it appears one can get certified with only ~10 hours of self-paced videos. Hardly the level of elite golf experience that the website testimonials from professional golfers led me to believe. The facility is an ordinary gym. A few mats, racks of free weights, benches, etc. Serviceable, but standard. They do have golf simulators, which members have access to although I didn't have the chance to see one. I had to purchase a package of personal training sessions up front before my initial assessment. My unused sessions were not refunded after my first visit didn't live up to expectations. If you want an ordinary gym with personal training and its locations are convenient, Perform for Golf may be a great option for you. If you're serious about golf and looking for a golf-specific training center, this product falls short of the company's marketing.

When I eventually noticed and contacted them, management confirmed they had received my cancellation and admitted the charges were a mistake. The first refund was supposed to be issued in mid-January, but it never came through. I followed up by email and phone, and I've received no response. Mistakes happen, but the lack of accountability, missed commitments, and silence afterward are what really concern me. I would recommend being very cautious and keeping detailed records if you choose to do business here.

I love just shooting around--not many places to do that in SF it seems (and some of the public courts intimidate me because people play pick-up!). The rooftop view is wonderful.
