As a knitwear designer I find it very helpful to see how many different shades of yarn they carry and how helpful the staff is when I need something special ordered. They take the time, find alternatives if they are available and they actually follow-up, good service, great selection, who could ask for more? Me, I also buy my quilting and other sewing supplies here because the selection of fabric is so impressive. They don't stop there, the notions wall is amazing, they even carry a selection of German thread. For the folks who remember the selection of Lopi in Woburn, you will be disappointed to see it's not here, but I think that's because the yarn is no longer imported by that nice family out around Townsend. Don't despair, there are plenty of lovely alternatives to choose from and a well educated yarn staff to help you figure it all out. read more

I would give this 4.5, but I will be generous and go with the 5... A groupon got me in the door, and I will be back. The mark of a good fabric store for me is a good selection of wools, knits, and linens, and this had all of the above, plus beautiful silks. The prices are pretty great for what they are carrying. I personally will probably mostly get my yarns closer to my home, but will make the trips when I need some special fabrics or apparel fabrics. I sew most of my kids and my own clothes, so for the price and selection, it is totally worth a trip now and again. What really sealed the deal was the owner (or who I would assume was the owner). She really went the extra mile to say hi, ask about my interests, and make me feel welcome. I really only prefer to buy from shops that are local and have a local feel - so will be adding this to my list of local shops. read more

I have gone here a handful of times and my experience has always been okay. This last time, however, was awful. The customer service was terrible. I had a question for the woman working in the yarn section, the first thing she said was "Is it quick?", clearly uninterested. I asked her if they were going to have more of a specific yarn/color, and without even checking she just said no. So at the checkout I decided to ask the cashier about it, and the same woman was called over. Annoyed, she said no, rolled her eyes and walked away. Beware! I think her name was Darlene, she had glasses, short brown hair, and a grumpy face. As far as yarn goes, the selection is decent. Nothing really spectacular, and quite pricey. I don't think I'll be shopping here again anytime soon. read more

I really like this store, and I agree with the other reviewers that it is a step above Joannes- which seems to cater to crafters. I found the fabric selection to be very good (maybe the best in the area), and I especially like that they have some leather and a good variety of bonded and imitation leathers as well. The prices are all over the place. Some seemed very reasonable, some seemed a little high. The only reason I have given this 4 stars instead of 5 is that I have had problems on more than one occasion finding someone in the store to cut the fabric for me. Also, there are many rolls of very heavy upholstery fabric which was too heavy for the woman cutting the fabric to lift, and there wasn't anyone to help her lift it. So, it would seem that they need more staff, especially on weekday mornings when I am likely to visit. Otherwise, I'm glad that they are there and will return. Next time I'll bring my husband to help me lift the fabric rolls! read more

This is a terrific place to find random stuff on the cheap (I'm talking to you, costume designers). I recently stopped in looking for some terry-cloth, and ended up walking past their applique bins. They're cheap and often gorgeous, although you have to pick through the pile and make sure the ones you find are intact. I ended up finding beaded collars that made perfect accessories for our cabaret's "Walk Like An Egyptian" number. And even though I can't speak to Tracy C.'s customer service experience there, the staff on duty the day I was there really went out of their way to help me out and get me a good deal. read more

Words cannot express the awesomeness. As you walk down the stairs, you are greeted with rows upon rows of colorful, quality fabrics and yarn. Unlike some chain stores, this is not full of craft items or fake flowers. Their stuff is excellent quality and reasonably priced. I'll be back for sure! read more

My friend had told me that this was the place to go for fabrics and buttons. She did not steer me wrong. The selection was amazing. I used a Groupon and the staff was so nice about helping me out. Fast forward two months later. I looked at my credit card bill and realized that they had charged me the entire price and not deducted the groupon credit. I remembered that there was a bit of a problem with it at checkout. I called them today and Maria stayed on the phone with me for over 30 minutes searching through the numerous groupons to get my receipt (which I had tossed out), and had to reconcile it with their software system. After she got all the information, she spoke with the manager Jan. Jan came on the phone, apologized profusely and issued a credit right away. There was no need for her to apologize as it was a very confusing process. I will always come here for my sewing needs just because I know that this is a very honest, reputable business that has wonderful customer service. *I did take one star off because the first person I spoke with asked me come in and try to resolve the problem. Since I live 14 miles away, I didn't want to make a special rip so I called back and got lovely Maria. read more

This is a nice fabric store, but beware, they do not take returns of fabric once it's been cut off the bolt, no matter how large the piece!

A friend of mine told me about this store years ago. He used it for their large selection of well priced upholstery fabric. When I finally visited the store, I was in HEAVEN! It was my tactile dream. So many fabrics to choose from. I sometimes find it hard to contain myself and end up with more fabric to add to my stash. I may enter the store with one project in mind and typically I find what I'm looking for and more! And then there are the employees - - I totally appreciate their knowledge and willingness to help or find me help. Today I had the pleasure of being helped by Nancy and Kathy and Q and Peter. All of them were pleasant and helpful and knowledgeable. I read some of the "less than favorable" reviews and am kinda surprised...one person called the apparel fabric "small and dreary" - - today I purchased some yummy textured teal rayon; some deep turquoise textured cotton and some fuschia/bright patchwork cotton; some more muted colors (teal, yellow, navy, white) shirting; turquoise batik knit cotton...none of them dreary and there were many more to chose from! Another person called out the staff as being mean and nasty - - I have NEVER had that happen to me, nor have I witnessed it happening to others. Another person said "it is dark and dreary" - - really? You do realize it is in a basement so natural light is hard to come by? And it is not dark as it is well lit, and the fabrics and yarn take the dreariness away (in my opinion). For me, Fabric Place Basement is one of my "happy places"....I get to be around wonderful fabric and yarn and people. read more

Peter, the owner, was RUDE. Would not tell me he was the owner, sarcastically says "it depends who wants to know." I had driven almost an hour to show him a "dog carrier," that I had made using his fabric. and to shop. Finally got a that's nice, without ever looking at it close. Sarcastic person. I tried to shop, kept hearing, can I help you to other customers, never to me. I just left. My husband's comment summed it up, "Now you know why he lost his other three shores and he'll lose this one too." My sewing guild friends were not surprised and had nothing good to say about him. read more

This is an awesome store for all levels of sewist. The prices arent too bad. When i was there, they had yards of pretty printed and solid silk apparel fabric on sale for $1.99/yard. Parking is free, the staff is nice, store was pretty busy but i didnt have to wait too long to have my fabric cut.i gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because its quite hard to push my cart between some aisle because some fabric are in rolls and placed against a temporary wall so theres bound to be fabric that is on the verge of falling or on the floor and some fabric are being run over my carts, i cringed when i saw a lady pushed her cart over some edges of white satin but it wasnt her fault because theres no room to put them anywhere. But this store is worth the drive! read more

I really wish giving a zero rating was possible. I have given this store three chances, and I am officially DONE. The first time that I came in, the store was rather busy, and I couldn't find a single employee that was willing to help; and no, they weren't all occupied with other customers, some of them were standing around talking with one another and had a problem when I asked for help. I did eventually find an employee that was willing to help me (an older lady, named Nancy). The next time I came in, the fabric selection hadn't only not changed, but there were holes in the racks where product had been taken down and not replaced, enough so that I thought maybe they were starting to go out of business. This shopping experience wasn't as bad in terms of finding an available employee, however the one that I did find was beyond rude: both to customers that were shopping, but also to the employees as well, talking down to and ordering them around, while she leaned on one of the tables you get fabric cut at, texting on her phone, implying that she was in charge, etc leading me to believe she was the owner of the business. Her nametag said Elizabeth. I didn't bother to complain because at that point I believed she was the owner, and knew my complaint would go nowhere with her. I did not make a purchase this day, I was disgusted and left. Yesterday was the final straw, my friend and I stopped in quickly because she needed to grab some thread and I figured I'd pop in and see if anything had changed. Well, it hasn't. There were two gentlemen standing by the register talking (obviously about an employee or employees), the younger man was trying to keep the conversation quiet, but the older man (whom I learned later was in fact the OWNER) was speaking very poorly of at least one employee, referring to him as an "abuser", and saying that he obviously cannot work alone because he doesn't know what he is doing and that he needs to be stood next to and watched constantly to get the tasks done. I was there long enough to hear that an employee had been on their phone and that was an issue, when I had previously seen multiple employees on their phones (including the manager who was so rude). The owner clearly did not care what the other employee had to say and dismissed his reasoning for whatever was happening. AVOID AT ALL COSTS! THIS STORE IS NOTHING LIKE ANY OF THE OLD FABRIC PLACES! 99% OF THE PEOPLE HERE DO NOT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING NOR DO THEY CARE! read more
