My recent stay at the Fairfax Marriott at Fair Oaks had both positive and disappointing aspects. The exterior and interior facilities were very clean and well maintained, which created a good first impression. However, the bar service was unsatisfactory--the bartender failed to acknowledge the order of waiting guests, repeatedly serving others who arrived after my wife and me. Our room also had maintenance issues: the nightlight did not work, and the outlet powering the mini fridge was faulty, leaving the fridge inoperable. I hope management addresses these issues to bring the guest experience up to the Marriott standard. I would never ever stay here again! I only booked this room this past weekend for a friend's wedding. There was a discounted rate but it just wasn't worth it. It wasn't far from the wedding venue and many wedding guests stayed here! Checking in was easy. Marty at the front desk was very nice and welcoming. My issues were with the room and overall hotel feel. This place is very run down and in need of serious renovations. The lobby and the lobby bar looks nice with the fireplace and comfy couches, but once you get to the room, that's a whole different story! There's no need to use the key card in the elevator. That didn't feel safe! As a Marriott member, this hotel didn't have the comfort I'm used to. This was probably the worst I've experienced. Here is a breakdown of some of the issues: -Our room was dingy with a musty odor. -Even with all the lights on, it was very dark and we couldn't keep the blinds open because it faced the courtyard with rooms on the other side and basically one could see into the room. -The bathroom door was coming apart. -The water pressure was very low. I wasn't able to take a proper shower all weekend. -Several of the outlets in the room didn't work. I had plugged my phone in one of them and didn't realize until later that it hadn't charged. -The furniture was old and peeling -Very loud and didn't get much rest Some positives: there's free and ample parking. There's a mall closeby with shpopping and dining options. We voiced our concerns to the front desk upon checkout and they didn't offer any compensation other than two $10 credits to use at any Marriott location. Not acceptable! read more

One of the worst hotel stays I've ever had. I recently stayed here for a friends wedding and let's just say this hotel is in need of several improvements! Checking in was easy and the parking lot was free, those were really the only positives besides the bar and being very close to the Fair Oaks mall! The hotel lobby was decent and had a nice fireplace but once you get to the elevators and the rooms it went downhill quickly. The elevators don't require a keycard and they are slow. The water pressure in the shower was weak and the water took a while to get hot. The room we stayed in was dark and dingy. It was so dark I could barely do my makeup! The room was old and dated and the furniture was not in good condition at all. The bathroom door was coming apart and many of the outlets didn't work. This was not acceptable standards at all for a hotel. Anyway, upon checking out, I opted to sit in the lobby for a bit, just to get out of the room as it was dusty and hard to breathe in there. I visited as part of a conference and the experience was... subpar. Front desk staff were kind and helpful, but the room itself had obvious signs of wear and tear throughout and several furniture items and trimmings needed some TLC. After checking in, I went to one of the two available elevators which was totally filled with a pile of dirty towels. They remained there for over 30min when I came back downstairs. Odd. The location is near a mall, which is fine, but a weird location for a conference center, and not much space to walk around outdoors. One of the meeting rooms we used had a terrible odor, either of mold, wet walls, or something in between. I was extremely disappointed in the banquet staff's total lack of knowledge of gluten free items for all of our meals. Items were not properly labeled for cross contamination/allergies, and food options were either nonexistent or required 15+ min to cook (in the case of hard gluten free pasta). read more

The breakfast food was good and there is definitely a great bar where a lot of guests patronize each evening. Great location that is walking distance to a mall which has very good food offerings. There is no pool which was a little disappointing but the location was the main reason I stayed here minus having the pool. It continues to annoy me that I have to stand in line to check in, instead of being able to use the app to check-in and get a digital key, like with Hilton. They let you check in using the app here, but it serves no purpose. This place is starting to get rundown, especially the rooms. My kids were excited to go out onto the balcony over the atrium, but the doors are bolted shut. But at least we still get all the noise that comes up from the atrium at night. The room is dark. No regular coffee in the rooms, only decaf. Breakfast was unremarkable, thankfully I got it complimentary because of my status because it's not worth what they pay for it. This place perhaps was once a nice place. But it's outdated, dirty, broken, and in need of a replacement manager. Whoever is in charge is a complete failure. The gym is needing repair, the bathrooms are old and filthy, the AC, is loud and barely works, the curtains in our room are torn and tattered, there is months-old dust caked on surfaces, and the restaurant opens late every day but Friday through Sunday. The saving grace is that most of the staff are really good and decent. They are just forced to work for some incompetent idiot manager. The gym, though in need of repair, is large and basically works, just needs a few hundred dollars of maintenance. This is just a complete management failure. read more

I stayed one night (Friday night) for an event in the hotel. I paid for this personally, no points used. The hotel was busy booking a large group that arrived by bus. But it cleared out quickly while we ate lunch in the restaurant there. The rooms are clean and comfortable. The bathroom has a tub/shower, not a stall shower. The tub is slippery and there is no bath mat provided. You may be able to request one from the front desk. The counter space in the bathroom is good. There is a separate counter across from the closet with a coffee maker and limited coffee/tea, not sure if there was powdered milk or not, I didn't inspect closely. Closet is a good size. Room is a nice size, very large tv, desk and eating table, desk chair, other seating. Free wifi worked well. Restaurant is good. I had a burger and fries for lunch and the buffet ($16.95) for breakfast. Everyone on staff is very friendly and helpful and welcoming. My room was at the very end of the hall, so very quiet, not a lot of slamming doors even though the hotel was almost full. This time of year, I think hotels turn off the a/c so it was hard to cool down the room and had to wait for the room to cool down based on outside air. read more

Fantastic experience from beginning to end. This hotel is across the parking lot from a large mall but separate. It has it's own entrance and parking lot. Plenty of parking spaces in the front, along side and back of building. Beautiful open lobby area as you enter, and an open atrium to provide the décor that many of us look for. Kind customer service as I approached registration to obtain my keys. Clean elevator and hallways. I reserved a regular King sized room. When I entered my room I was in awe! It was so huge! Definitely the biggest King sized bedroom I've ever stayed. There was a king bed, sofa pull out, desk/work area, vanity area and bathroom. A refrigerator was provided as well. I would definitely stay here again! The price was right, the location is awesome and the environment/ experience was perfect! read more

The rooms were decently maintained, but you could see signs of wear and tear. The desk drawer didn't stay closed and had to be held by a chair. The phone didn't work. We had a very spacious king bed room on the 2nd floor with an indoor balcony. The balcony overlooked the hotel bar and at times the noise from the bar area was quite loud. The hotel is pet friendly. My puppy stayed with us in the room and went for walks in the parking lot. It cost $100 for their stay. There were a few events taking place at the hotel so it was always lively. I'm a Bonvoy member. I stayed for 2 nights at this hotel. they gave me a room very close the the elevator and right across the ice machine. The room was so outdated and had a huge gap on the front door making it very noisy inside. The chair and the wash basin were in pathetic condition. I had no time to change the room since it was a very busy trip. My question to Marriot, is why do they even allot a room to a guest (leave alone a Bonvoy member) that has these issues. I spoke to the manager before checkout and his reaction was "you should have asked for a different room" . I sent an e-mail to the concerned at this location and I got 10000 points credited to my account. Upon checking in, my husband was given a $10 off coupon to be used by the end of our one night stay. We stayed in a connecting Toron and I am not a fan of connecting rooms unless I am traveling with my family. I wish they would ask or disclose that prior to you walking into the room. Not all Marriott's are alike. I often find there's no consistency with the brand. I have posted many videos of my rooms on YouTube so, there's proof. The room was clean. Bedding was clean. The bed itself felt less comfortable than others I have slept in. Overall, we had a descent night sleep. The pillows are always a point of contention for me. I could take up all four pillows and still feel flat. The woman leading the breakfast was a real gem. We paid for a fare with breakfast and the food was good. It was a small area, but you had many options to include smoked salmon and fresh cut up fruit. We ordered fresh omelets as that was also an option. Location was good. So this is my second time attending a work function here the first time was in my pre-yelp days and was pleasantly surprised overall of how nice the hotel was. Fast forward a decade and this place has gotten a bit of an update. Granted each time I've never stayed overnight so I can only speak to the conference facilities and the food in this review. Easy and ample parking here that is free. Once you enter the lobby area is a bit expansive but with a somewhat choppy layout. To the right is the check in area and to the left is a bar/restaurant area, there is also a screen to let you know what events are going on. As you walk into the atrium its light filled via the ceiling skylights with various conference rooms off the main atrium. At the event I attended the hotel provided a nice continental breakfast. I was impressed with the nice selection of fruit and the ample supply of it too. The muffins were just ok, they also offered yogurt to round off the breakfast offerings which was nice. The coffee provided was not too great. The conference room we were in was a bit cramped, although I'm guessing the organizers of the event I was attending perhaps weren't expecting as many people that came. Lunch was provided and was at the hotel, a buffet style mostly cold, they had a nice offering of cold cuts, and even chicken salad with a nice variety of breads, they also had an ample offering of vegetarian/vegan items so that was nice, this was rounded off by chicken noodle soup. They also had a lovely pesto pasta salad which was quite good. Again I feel like hotels have stepped up their food game. Overall a good venue with pretty good food. Unfortunately due to illness I was unable to stay at the property. I am disappointed that I was charged a cancellation fee despite canceling the reservation 36 hours before arrival. The property has refused to make any concessions to the fee. Too bad they were not more accommodating to guests' unexpected situations. read more

This Marriott honestly has the worst ventilation system a hotel ever had! The lobby smell amazing (because they re-did this recently), the 2nd floor reeks of stale food (because of the lounge) and the 3rd floor (where we stayed smelled like laundry detergent all day - and not the good, fresh kind). If you decide to skip the overly slow elevators and take the stairs instead, beware that they will smell constantly of bad trash. Honestly, this hotel really frustrated me. While they did all they could to update the lobby and make it gorgeous, the rooms were given zero love. The rooms are tiny, dated, sad, with very little light, terrible flooring and the worst AC system ever. It kicks off post midnight for a few hours and then disappears again. Given graduation time, we had limited options, but I don't expect to use this place again. read more

Arrived here on a Saturday and checked-out the following Monday. To say this was a terrible hotel stay would be an understatement. Check-in and out of the hotel was seamless, no real issues. The hotel itself is centrally located near the mall, which is especially useful for people from out-of-town who may need to grab something to eat or get some quick shopping done. Really, the biggest complaint here is with regards to cleanliness. The hotel lobby simply shows a surface level clean, however we found multiple yellow and red stains on our comforter. Speaking with hotel staff yielded no immediate resolution, a paltry $10 credit towards the restaurant. Would definitely think twice before booking here. It was enough to just lay horizontally for a couple hours. We checked in around 10p, and it seemed like a major inconvenience to the front desk who was busy playing video games while I waited for several minutes before Marcos yelled to get his attention. He was unwelcoming and never even told us what room or directions on how to get there (the basics in front desk customer service). The AC didn't feel like it worked at all throughout the night.. we ended up waking at 3:30 and getting our day started because we just couldn't sleep anymore. Great location. Not too far from Mason U. There is a shopping mall with several restaurants adjacent to this hotel. The outside of this hotel was average, the drive up "carport" wasn't the cleanest as the trash cans were overflowing, some old gum on the ground and the "chef's garden" (cute concept) was in serious need of attention. But the lobby inside was clean, quiet and relaxing. There was renovation work being done so some of the elevators weren't operating. One thing was odd: The agent told us about the concierge room upstairs available to Marriott members and how we could get snacks and beverages for free if we just used our Marriott key card to get inside. We were excited. But it wasn't as good as it was made out to be. We did get free sodas and there was some old fruit. But no other snacks this time. The room was pretty good, not super, but acceptable. Carpets were clean. Beds comfortable. Tub/shower was a bit old and a slight bit of mildew. But they tried to modernize and update so it was acceptable. The air conditioning unit in our room was a bit loud. But overall it was a decent experience. There are better choices nearby in terms of value received given the cost. I've stayed at a couple in the local area (there are plenty) and they are better options. The front desk staff is probably the highlight. I paid for the upgraded room, it wasn't terrible. The club floor lounge staff were excellent. So that is the 2 stars. Per a lot of other reviews on here, there are plenty of downsides. On my first night, I flew in late, but called room service well before closing to order a small dish. The staff said they'll be right up. After postponing sleep for 45 minutes, I call and they say the kitchen staff left and that they just forgot about the order. No big deal, but maybe a phone call? No phone call, they just decided to not deliver and never gave me a heads up. They called me back and offered me a bag of chips from the gift store. Service work is tough, I get it, but I stay in a hotel nearly once a week (for a long time now) and this is a first. The rooms are pretty clean, the lounge staff was super, but the room service was terrible and the road noise can be heard from bed. My two cents - look at all the reviews (not just the ones paid to be placed at the top) then stay somewhere else. read more

I attended a work event at the Marriott. We were in a conference room with 80+ individuals and it was uncomfortable. The temperature was either freezing cold or unbearably hot. The coordinator asked repeatedly to turn up or turn down the AC but couldn't get it to where it was juuust right. Pinnacle of our troubles was a fire alarm that went off every 10-15 min during every presenter. It was very distracting and stressful for the presenters and attendees. read more

This is not a Marriott Residence Inn guys- it's a Marriott...good for business and conventions. It's also convenient for shopping at Fair Oaks mall and I thought it was a good choice for a concert at Wolftrap. It's a decent place. But it didn't live up to my normal Marriott (especially Residence Inn experiences). - Parking is free and ample - Rooms are clean but the air wasn't cooling in the room like the "68 degree cool" selection on the screen indicated - Only one regular coffee in the room? Who needs 2 decaf and 1 regular?? Need more regular coffee please. - They have real creamer in the room. Still doesn't make up for the lack of regular coffee. - We were way underdressed compared to everyone in ties and suits (just weird) - Breakfast buffet at 9:30 on a weekday morning was absolutely empty. I think this was a personal buffet they set out just for us. Neat but also kinda eerie. Need some background music?? $16 is a good price and I loved the biscuits and gravy. - $140/room is not bad compared to the Comfort Inn prices near Wolftrap (that were sold out) but it is a 20 min drive to Vienna, VA - Beds were a little soft but comfy and the pillows made you not want to get out of bed read more

This is a nice hotel. Consistent friendly staff. Rooms are clean and decent. Always sleep well. Fair Oaks mall is right there in case you forgot something or feel like doing some shopping. For breakfast they have a buffet option which is pretty nice for those who may be tight on time. They even have an omlette station (though I haven't tried it yet). I usually just go for the scrambled eggs since I usually just breeze in and out. Right now, it is my home away from home when I have work meetings in our Fairfax office. It is very convenient location-wise, consistently clean, and the great staff/service is what keeps me going back. read more

Beautiful hotel with horrendous customer service. Upon check in I was greeted by hotel representative Clare Gardill. She advised that check in was at 4:00pm however she would try to check us in early. Great! However upon going to our room, I found it was a single room and it was myself, husband and 3 kids! I returned to check in only to be told that all rooms with double beds were sold out and I would have to pay for an extra room if I needed the extra beds despite what my reservation stated. She said the best I can do is "give you a phone number to another Marriott property". After speaking with the manager Harash Bagla I only found that he was worse than his checking representative. The best he could offer was "hold on let me check on internet rates for another room" Ridiculous, unprofessional, and overall terrible experience at this facility. The proper way to have handled this situation was to provide our family with an additional room at zero cost or as a Marriott employee PLACE the call to YOUR establishment to locate the room that you promised but could not deliver! Calling the corporate office was also a ridiculously long process not even work writing about! Let's just say 45mins holding for a manager. After a long process I gave up and paid for the extra room just so that my family was not randomly waiting in the foyer after an exhausting trip. After checking out rooms one was clean the other mediocre. My overall impression is save yourself time, aggravation and pay the extra money by staying at another establishment other than a Marriott property or specifically the Marriott FairOaks, Virginia! The location of this hotel is excellent; with easy access to the expressway and the mall across the lot. Service at the front desk was spotty; really depending on the employee working the shift. The conceirge lounge had a very limited selection and it unfortunetly repeated over and over every week. Even with the limited selection, the bacon was never once cooked properly; coming out either undercooked or burnt. The worst part of this hotel and why after several weeks of staying here I finally had enough:noise! If you are unfortunate to get a room facing the interior courtyard; then prepare yourself to be bombarded by noise late into the evening/night. Whether its a group of kids on a DC trip running around the place yelling,etc. A group of adults at a conference/meeting at the hotel; getting drunk and yelling,etc: last visit going on past 1am! I have asked for rooms facing the outside, but not always available. Also keep in mind that some rooms have been renovated with standing showers and others still carrying the old layout. However, if I had to describe this particular location in one word it would be: OUTDATED Highs -Ample parking -Renovated/updated entrance -Near/within walking distance of Fair Oaks Mall and the Waterford Lows -I found the rooms extremely dated -The restrooms in the rooms small -Even the hallways lacked in love and showed their age This Marriott reminds me of Spanx. On Tuesday December 18, I got to the hotel around checking in time. I got my bags and went to the lobby to check in. As I was checking in, I was informed that their were no King rooms available and they would have to put me in a twin room. I was not satisfied with that since I booked my room weeks before coming on the trip. After dealing with that issue of the room, I went to my room to put my stuff away. I opened the door to a barking dog that was barking from the time I opened the door to the time I closed the door. I could still hear it in the room. At the same time, I received a notification from my bank saying I was charged 295.44. I was very worried about that amount since I booked my room for 265.44. I went back down to the lobby to get a new room and find out why I was being over charged for my room. Arriving at the lobby, I talked to the same lady that told me about the King room issued. I asked about my bill so I could understand why I was being over charge. She informed me it was a $10 a night charge and would be refunded at the end of the stay. I informed her that I was never notified of this charge at the time of booking the room or checking in. At this time, I was beyond frustrated with my entire stay at this hotel, but I got a room change because of the dog and went to go to dinner. The next day (Wednesday) I had a very important interview which in the morning I found out the shower was taking forever to warm up. I discovered the hot and cold colors were switched but it still took several minutes to get hot. I was at the point of leaving the hotel but I decided to stay. Later that night I went out to the bar which was a great time. The next morning was my birthday so I slept in. I was woken up to extremely loud noise in the room next to me. It sounded like they were doing construction in the room. I went down to the lobby to get some answers. I talked to a lady which told me the only construction was happening on the second floor. However, I was on the fifth floor and it was definitely construction going on. The two ladies had no clue what was going on in the hotel. She would find out and call me when she found out more information. She offered to change my room but I told her no after already being moved because of the dog. I was at lunch when she called me but said it was going to take several hours since they were doing stuff in that room. When I got back to the hotel from lunch, I went to the lobby to talk to her. I told her I find it extremely rude to not inform guest of work in the room next to them. Matter of fact I find it extremely unnecessary when someone is trying to enjoy their stay and they have to deal with that noise next door. The only reason why I stayed at the hotel for another night is because I had another interview early in the morning to attend. So I stayed the night and in the morning I got up to pack everything. After packing everything in my room, I discovered a pair of men's underwear in the closet on the top shelve. They were not mine and I was disgusted on how housekeeping did not clean the room properly. I went down stairs to check out and talk to the manager. I checked out and got a paper copy of my bill. Then I asked for the mater who was standing right next to me at the time. I informed him of everything that happened. He seemed not too concerned about it and did not say much about it. He said sorry and took only one night off my bill. I was extremely upset on how everything was handled. After everything that happened to me in this hotel, I should not of paid for my stay at all. I felt like the people in the lobby just wanted to keep shifting me around and not solve the problems I was having. The hotel did not have my room I reserved in the first place then the dog, then getting over charged, then the water, then the construction, and finally the underwear. I will never stay at another Marriott again after that stay. There are hundreds of hotels in the area but I decided to pick this one. I regret staying here and wasting my money on this establishment. I was there trying to get a job and to enjoy my 24th birthday. Instead the hotel created my entire say to be problematic. After dealing with everything from this hotel, I deserve to have my stay refunded! read more

Today's traveler and hotel guest already pays high prices and though overall service is good free WiFi should simply be a no brainer. Fairfax Marriott at Fair Oaks is my first choice, when I travel to Fairfax to work. Service here is exceptional. Friendly staff - definitely. The first time I was here, I was coming down with a cold. Even though the bar had just closed, the bar keep was nice enough to get me a cup of tea, when I mentioned that I wasn't feeling well. Also, when I mentioned to the desk staff I had a burnt out light bulb in my bathroom, someone immediately came to my room and changed it. It's conveniently close to where I want to go. It's also within reasonable driving distance to Washington DC, for some touristy activities. I also like that there's a mall across the parking lot, in case I get bored or hungry. Lots of parking, clean and comfortable bed and I get free wireless? I like. I definitely like. read more
