This is one of the movie theaters in Marin that I enjoy going to, especially since it is locally owned. The theater has reclining seats and a spacious layout. There is a good selection of snacks, and staff members are usually available if you need anything. Parking can be limited when it gets busy. I recommend coming for a late-night showing when there are fewer people. read more

Been around along time and is a fine movie theater. Right smack in the middle of downtown, along Broadway, the main access road from the freeway. The killer is parking. Finding a space to park, that is. Not many options, so you will drive around a lot. There are other, easier to access options in the many shopping centers along Hwy 101. A great little movie theater with classic styling and modern amenities. Power-reclining seats and arm rest-mounted tray tables make for a great and relaxing watching experience. The concessions are also reasonably priced as far as movie theaters go, especially when it comes to California prices. I was ready to watch Megalopolis during the 2 PM viewing when the theater encountered a technical issue with the projector during the movie. Thankfully, the lovely woman working there handled the situation all though very stressful like an absolute professional! She assured us that we would have a wonderful experience when we returned. Can someone from Fairfax Theatre please assist? We never received our refund. The movie time for Little Mermaid listed on Google was for 7:30 PM, which was 30 minutes behind the actual movie time of 7:00 PM. We didn't want to watch a movie that was nearly 30 minutes in, so we had our refund processed at the ticket counter. The man working there was helpful, asked for our tickets, then told us that the refund would take a couple days to process. Unfortunately, the refund from July 12 never went through. It wasn't until after leaving we realized it would've been beneficial for us to ask to take a photo of the tickets in case the refund never went through. I do have a screenshot of my bank statement for proof of purchase (attached below). I called but there seems to be no way to get through to an actual person. Can someone please assist? I WENT to see the Bob Dylan film in Tuesday afternoon with 3 friends. we could not hear the dialogue at all and even the music was not as loud as its needed to be. I saw this film in Tiberon with dolby sound and it was a completely different experience where every word was clear and the music was an immersive experience. very different experience. Sure, Fairfax is comfortable, too with reclining seats, but after experiencing the difference in what poor sound quality made in Fairfax after exceptional quality in Tiberon cinemalounge, I might not go to fairfax again... read more

My friend and I went to see Wicked in Theater 1 - a 4:00 time. The theater was FREEZING!!! Thought maybe it would warm up, but their excuse was corporate knows of the issue, but hasn't done anything about it. By the end, of over 2 1/2 hrs, we had our hats on and jackets zipped all the way up! We complained again at the end and was given passes to come back - after asking. We also found out its only in Theater 1 - which is so strange they couldnt be honest from the begining. We could have gone to a different showing in a HEATED theater. Being that this was on one of the coldest days we've had in December, it would've been nice to be told instead of the staff being sheepishly shy in their replies when asked. I love this theater but, come on CORPORATE.... get it together!! read more

The theater has spent money on better seats which are really nice! There are 6 choices of beer but only one wine choice. The women's bathroom was a mess and there were 2-3 employees just hanging out behind the counter. The staff they do have, is generally courteous. read more

I came into the theatre today and the woman working, Zoe, was absolutely amazing!! Our movie Megalopolis had somehow shut off 10 minutes into the show. I think she was the only one there because when people came out to complain, she was helping them with refunds WHILE helping other costumers with their movie. SOMEHOW she was also on the phone trying to get the problem fixed. She was absolutely so sweet to us and those around us and held herself with such grace (I know I'd be freaking out) even though the night didn't go as planned, Zoe really helped us out and worked extremely well under the pressure. I love the Fairfax theater because it is close (I realize that's not helpful for some of you), parking is almost always easy, and because the recliner seats are comfy, and it gets current, good movies. And the nostalgia factor if the old movie theater persists even though it's been remodeled into multiple smaller screen theaters. It still has a Pac Man game in the lobby! The kids who work in front and at the concession stand are super helpful. It's a gem! read more

We went to see Captain Marvel yesterday and honestly, we didn't really expect anything. Just wanted to go to a movie theater in Marin instead of driving to the city. We went in for the 3 PM show and got 2 seats in the back. First of all, this is not your typical big theater which I didn't really care at all. I only wanted the theater to be clean and have comfortable seats! Right when I walked in, I was actually quite surprised that they were those reclining seats! And they looked super clean! I had nothing to complain about this theater and really enjoyed this experience! It took us awhile to drive around to find parking though. But that's just one minus point that has nothing to do with the theater. We would definitely come back soon! read more

Visiting the Fairfax Theatre through the years is akin to watching a teenager mature into a successful young adult that you still really like. First it was just the local theatre, playing new releases, near at hand and good enough. Then they went green, totally solar. One of the theatres, the big one, was upgraded with fancy seating. When I walked by last week I noticed that all movies every Tuesday are $6. Wow, nice! Then I arrived and noticed a little line at the ticket window and saw that customers were being asked to advance select their seat. I griped; this process was slowing down the line and I didn't see the need. A woman behind me said "but wait until you see the seats". The Fairfax Theatre has been reinvented. The seats - in all of the theatres - are plush, automated recliners. No more making out in the theatre but you might want to settle in for a hard sleep. The theatre now features beer and wine also, just like the Lark. The setting is seriously comfortable while retaining the intimacy of a small theatre. I've been known to purchase homes based on proximity to a good movie theatre. Fairfax Theatre was always good enough but they've now vaulted into a totally winning neighborhood movie house. Without moving through an angsty teen phase, the Fairfax Theatre has matured into someplace quite perfect. P.S. to Management: * I'd still prefer not to choose my seat when purchasing my ticket. * Brewer's Yeast would be a welcome popcorn topping. read more

Update: While watching a movie here, our bikes were stolen from the bike rack in front of the ticket office. We asked the guy working at the ticket booth if he saw someone sawing our chains and steal our bikes but he shrugged and said it happens all the time here. Seems sketchy, they should at least put signs up that bike theft is an issue. read more

Lovely theater, rarely crowded (at least now, post-pandemic). Very comfortable seating. Not an oversized screen, but large enough.

Wow! The theatre is going through some major upgrades. New floors, assigned seating and power-reclining seats with huge trays! (I'd love to have one for my house.) In fact, the young lady sitting next to me curled up and went to sleep! Aisle width has also increased so you can walk by other patrons without them having to change positions. I was in one of the smaller venues but there were stacks of boxes of more seats in the lobby awaiting installation. The AC came on about ten minutes into my movie and I was comfortable for the duration. It's been a problem in the past where they TURN OFF the air conditioner and you begin to stew in your own juices as the humidity, heat and stuffiness make it a pretty miserable experience. Four stars for now. A fifth star will be forthcoming when the other venues are upgraded and I find the comfort level to be consistent. read more

One thing that I don't like is their on and off relationship with Fandango to purchase tickets. Fandango is horrible and is not a good reflection on the independent ownership of this theatre. I don't go to the movies more than a handful of times a year, so my standards for what makes a good theater are probably pretty skewed. That said... The theatre we were in was pretty small, which made it a rather intimate setting for seeing a subtitled showing of Spirited Away. Pretty cool! Also, very old-fashioned. I don't think I've seen a layout like this since I was a kid. It had big, old-fashioned plush chairs with a wild range of back-and-forth motion. I'm pretty sure I could recline easily and be no worse off for it. The arm rests also go up, which is nice for cuddling up if that's your thing (note: don't do this to strangers.) Tasty popcorn and cold Coke up front. Hard to argue with perfect movie snacks. Seemed like the guy running the concession stand was doing it all himself. Ran the register, handled the snacks, started the movie... hope they're paying that kid well. We'll definitely come back, though probably for one of the other Miyazaki screenings rather than a more modern film, which would almost guarantee a larger and more cramped experience. read more

The popcorn was okay but the most important thing to me is the seats and the seats at this theater were pretty worn. The back reclined but your feet are left to find a spot on the floor which is a strain for even a tall person. read more

Thanks to The Fairfax Theater I love love love the movies again! This time we were in Auditorium #6. It's wonderful! I don't think I've ever had a better movie experience. The room is big, and yet small enough to have that intimate feeling. The seats are comfortable, plush in fact, and the tables allow you to have your snacks and keep them off the floor. Staff keeps the theater spotless, and even the patrons seem to appreciate how special this theater is... everyone seems to take all their trash out with them. Finally, I must say the the sound system is remarkable. We saw Avengers; End Game, and the sound is such an important part of the experience. It was rich and sharp and perfectly balanced. Even the previews were bearable! Treat yourself to a movie, patronize the concession, and enjoy the luxury. It's so much better than watching TV at home. read more
