Lovely shop, nice people, I do want to share a little warning about Jamis brand bikes. They are not built to be stored outside. We bought a Jamis Allegro hybrid (about $600); in the first year the chain and rear sprocket were rusting quite a bit (we did oil them but still the alloys apparently did not like Philadelphia rain) After three years the aluminum frame developed a crack so the bike was unusable and unfixable. Jamis advertises a "lifetime" frame warranty, and Fairmount Bicycles staff did pursue it, but Jamis denied the claim because the crack was apparently caused by water that had seeped into the tubing and then froze. So, as I told the shop owner, we'll continue to support Fairmount Bicycles but not Jamis. We will buy our bikes elsewhere. read more

Ive lived around here for almost 2 years and I never knew this shop existed until someone told me about it. I thought they were joking because I literally run down the street 3 or more times a week and have never seen it. Ive been going all the way to Jays Pedal Power in fishtown for my parts because I didnt think there was anything close by. Anyway, the shop is awesome, the dudes who work there were super friendly and helpful. I dont know what J A is talking about describing the employees as snobs and mumblers, everyone was friendly and talkative. Only cons are probably the smaller selection and fact I didnt know it was there for a year. This will definitely be my new go to shop though. read more

We did a weekend getaway in Philliie and wanted to rent bikes for a true local experience. Fairmount was open on Sunday and had the best rental rates. I love their location on Fairmount near the penitentiary and so close to the river bike path, I can't wait to come back in the summer to ride that bike path again! once again fairmount bicycles for the win! i caught a slow leak off west river drive and i called the shop from my cell phone. i asked whether they were open and unfortunately they had closed up shop 10 minutes prior to my call. they asked where i was and i said im 5 minutes away (bike minutes of course). she told me if i could get there in 5 mins she would help me out. so i pumped up my tire as fast as i could and rode as quickly as possible on my leaking tire. i made it in the nick of time, using my bike buddy as a lookout for oncoming cars as im flying down side streets past the old prison. once i arrived i purchased 2 inner tubes and i had to get a fancy water bottle with the bike shop logo to show my appreciation. thanks for everything...reasonable, local and genuine bike shop for the win! read more

Now this is a great community bike shop. No frills, great and delightful staff, and great selection. The team here really knows how to get you rolling on your old bike that sat in your basement for years or a quick tune up if you went through a corner too fast and ate pavement. It is a perfect location for the neighborhood and if they don't have what I need they usually order it and get it in a few days. I'll keep coming back. read more

Fairmount Bicycles were very responsive after my apparent email and/or Yelp-expressed frustration. They offered a discount and were very accommodating. That said, I still ended up purchasing a bike at Bicycle Stable. Not because I held a grudge or anything, they just had the perfect bike for me in-store, while Fairmount would have had to order it. What can I say? This is a great neighborhood bike shop. About four weeks ago my fiancé had been a customer after she had been doored by a car and needed to get her bike fixed. The worker did a great job of evaluating the bike and considered the damage that could have been caused by the accident. He even made sure to ask my fiancé if she was okay and then spent almost half an hour making sure that bike was ready to go. Then a few weeks later I got doored and I went to get my bike fixed. A different attendant was just as attentive and caring and made sure that my bike was ready to go and I can get back on the road. Both times no charge! I will definitely be back. And I'm telling all my friends about this great shop! read more

I am so glad fairmount bikes moved in! When I visited last week to get some work done on my sweetie (new break cable, pads, fenders), the owner was informative and unpretentious (key in a bike shop owner I believe), and the best part was that he had my bike in road-worthy shape the next day. Seriously, how often can a person drop off a bike on Saturday and have it back on Sunday afternoon so they don't miss a day of their commute? Like, never. Which brings me to another bit of awesome news about this place: it's open on Sundays. Love that. Most important to this review is the quality of the service. After a week of riding through not such nice weather, I can firmly say the work done is holding up and nothing is rubbing on the tire--always my fear when it comes to breaks and fenders. Yay! A bike shop right around the corner from home! Exactly what I was looking for. Friendly and very knowledgeable staff. Stopped in this afternoon with questions and they tightened my chain, put air in my tires, and answered all of my concerns free of charge. UPDATED 6/27/12 I love the fact that this shop is right smack dab in the middle of Fairmount Avenue...it's certainly a neighborhood that needs a bike shop. The service has been quick, friendly and fair. You can just go in anytime if your bike has a problem and it's fixed really quickly. Even when I had a bad experience there (I related the story in my prior review here), things worked out for the better because of the shop's quality customer service. Basically, I took my bike in for a tuneup, and was told it would cost $95. I agreed to a buffer of $110--meaning that if repairs cost up to that much, they wouldn't have to call me; if they ended up costing more than $110 they would call me. Long story short, they didn't call me and then ended up charging me $126; I wasn't happy that I had to pick up the extra tab, but since the mechanics told me there was nothing they could do about it until the owner got back, and that I'd have to have my bike held hostage at the shop until then if I wanted to see the price I paid go down. I needed my bike the next day so that was out of the question. The owner (Shelly), though, called me about two weeks later. She remembered me--"you're one of our regulars" was the gist of the conversation--and said she felt bad about the way things had gone down. Because of that, she offered me a $25 store credit. That was pretty cool, especially since the incident felt fairly far in the past at that point. I have to say that I was very happy that the store went out of its way to try and make things right. This bike shop is out to be fair in every way and cares a lot about its customers. Because of that, this incident seems like it was more of a fluke than anything. 1. I'm just so glad this place exists. Before this place, Fairmount had zero bike shops. Good for quick fixes or tune-ups, or major overhauls. They also have sales of everything from tubes and locks to bikes. I think they might rent bikes too, but not sure on that. 2. They do quality repairs at very reasonable prices. I have had work done on my Fuji and my girlfriend's Trek, both road bikes. Each time was quick and affordable. The guys in there know what they are doing. The best part is, considering the area, they could really gouge you if they wanted to, but they don't. This is something that I really appreciate about this shop. 3. Fairmount Bicycles has been a great addition to the neighborhood since their opening a few years ago. Not having a shop in the neighborhood meant travelling across the city for quick pickups and repairs. Their prices are always reasonable, their hours and location (right on Fairmount Ave!) are convenient, and their staff have always been friendly and willing to accommodate any request I've had. In addition to their service, they've managed to become an excellent part of the Philadelphia cycling community. They host the popular Take your Time rides, as well as a number of other guided rides that are readily accessible to cyclists of all skill levels. In addition, they have both sponsored and/or contributed to a number of cycling-centric community events. Glad to have them around! read more

I've been here a few times mostly with good results. After recently having a wheel trued, my rear derailer was knocked out of spec by the shop and wouldn't shift properly. When I went back the following day to ask them to correct the issue they had caused, they charged me $10 for it. I was shocked that when I went to leave, I was asked to pay. I discussed with the employee (the one with the black dog) that it shifted smoothly before dropping it off. She told me she was charging me anyway, despite that I was buying a $90 helmet at the same time. After spending hundreds of dollars here, it's a shame that I'll have to go another shop. They are losing a lot of future business (I live 3 blocks away and own 3 bikes) over demanding $10 for an issue they caused. read more

My friend and I rented road bikes for the day from Fairmount and had a great experience. They were accommodating to us time wise and patient with fitting the bikes to us correctly. We also signed up for a group ladies ride through them and had a great time. It turned out to be just be me and my friend, and we're led by bike leader Jennifer. Jenny was friendly, patient, and full of enthusiasm. I'd definitely recommend Fairmount bikes. read more

CAUTION: Hipster Bike Snob Nest Alert. I came to this little hipster nest to get some service on one of my bikes and ask a couple of questions. I wish I never spent the small amount of $$ that I wasted here. The dude I had the displeasure of dealing with was a smug hipster with a comb over and an Abe Lincolnish beard...what an asshole. After declining the overpriced wheels/tires they tried to sell me, I made the mistake of asking if they knew anyone that could service my other bike, which is fitted with a 2-stroke motor. Mr. Hipster rolled his eyes and then proceeded not to answer my question, which prompted me to ask him if I had committed some form of blasphemy. He explained that I had stepped out of bounds because If I wanted to ride 2 wheels with a motor, I should just get a motorcycle. He went on to explain that he can't stand when he's riding his bike and someone passes him with a motorized bike. I've been biking all over NYC/Philadelphia for over a decade and avoid hipsters like the plague because of judgemental assholes like the one's that inhabit this squirrel nest. I have several bikes of all styles because I love two wheel creations but I won't be bringing any of them here, ever again. read more

I received help as soon as I entered the shop with my bike. No huss no fuss - the dude was on point with what my bike needed to survive after I told him what I thought needed fixed. What I liked about this place was unlike other places I've been to, they weren't casually trying to guilt trip me into getting a bunch of things done for my bike. He told me what I absolutely needed, charged me fairly and even pumped my tires without me even asking for it. They keep your number and call you once they're done working on your bike which I thought was neat - gave us a chance to walk up and down Fairmount and grab a beer, instead of just standing there. I had a bad experience with Fairmount a year ago, when I brought in my bicycle to have the brakes adjusted and was told by a guy with huge plugs in his ears that my bike would never be a good bike and wasn't worth any amount of repairs, so I should just put the money towards a new bike. I never took my bike there again for any repairs, because I found Philadelphia Bikesmith, which is also in the neighborhood, and loved them. And though I thought maybe my experience with plug guy was isolated, I didn't want to risk it again. Glad I didn't. Recently I went there to rent a bike for my girlfriend to ride for the afternoon, because I heard their rentals were affordable, and a different employee was also super dismissive towards us. While the rental bike was fine, and as affordable as I'd hoped, I could do without the attitude and the eyerolling. I don' t think I'll be back. read more

I couldn't have been more disappointed in my experience with Fairmount Bicycle. I participated in their Groupon which might turn out to be one of my worst purchases. They do nothing but attempt to add on to your bill by claiming you need parts when you actualy don't. They added unnecessary parts to my bill only to inflate it even after they promised to call if I needed any parts. They just went ahead and chose the parts they wanted to put on and then gave me the ridiculous bill when I arrived to pick it up. They put the screws to you. They offered to switch everything back if I wanted to leave my bike. Oh how sweet of you! This is a classic bait and switch operation. They quote prices that are innaccurate and then upcharge you once the special ordered parts are in and there is nothing you can do. I was misquoted the price of some pedals and then charged for THEIR PRICE QUOTE MISTAKE when they arrived. They were rude and unapologetic and only offered me the great option of coming back to their dingy, tiny storefront when someone who had authority could deal with all of my problems. This is no way to do business and I will NEVER, repeat NEVER return. Also a note to the more than 200 cyclist who got suckered into their Groupon: They will upsell you because they are pissed they sold so many. Also, plan to wait a long, long time for your bike. I was going to get another bike tuned up with the another groupon that I purchased. They said they could have it back to me in a MONTH!! That's right, ONE MONTH FOR A TUNEUP! Not only is that absurd, but unprofessional. If you can't handle the business that Groupon is going to provide you, don't do it or in the alternative, hire more mechanics during the busiest time of the year. They will only schedule 3 bikes for each day!!! So with the two mechanics on staff during the day, that averages out to be roughly 1.5 each. Congrats guys, way to work hard! I would strongly recommend going to an established shop in town, as there are many and save yourself the trouble of dealing with this shop, who are only looking to recover the money they lost through the Groupon by selling you parts you don't need and never telling you about it until you show up to pay your bill. I needed to rent a second bike for a friend to ride on the river trail with me. For four hours the rental cost $65. That's insane! What a ripoff. I have rented bikes in many cities and it's unfortunate Philly doesn't have a more reasonable option (for a road bike). They also are pretentious in a hipster sort of way. read more

I have had varied experiences with Fairmount Bicycles over the years. I find purchasing from them is a completely different and positive experience, where I have had several rude encounters with repairs. Last time I went they said a repair would not be possible and were short, rude, and curt about it. When I took it to another shop they fixed it no problem (at a lower price). After the last visit I will not be returning again. read more

In the past week, I had some lousy luck with my old beater mountain bike, and this shop really came through. For about $35, Shelly (sp?) replaced my bike's all but completely eroded freewheel and put on a new brake cable, which is very reasonable. What's more though, is that she didn't mind explaining to me what she was doing and what tools each procedure took. I have visited bike shops in the past where owners are very stand-offish about giving repair advice (so you can't save the $ and apply their lessons yourself) but she was totally cool about it. They also let me use their pump once free of charge when I rode by with a slow leak in one of my tire tubes. Totally awesome place; hope they stay around for years to come. read more

The shop specializes in the urban rider, commuter, and entry-level road cyclist - a highly under-served community when it comes to bike shops. It was easy to get there via public transit, the rental was quite reasonable, and the service and friendliness was excellent. The bike served me well for my trips between a B&B in the University City District and downtown, with a rear rack to hold my pannier and a lock. I will rent from them again! read more

If you are an amatuer rider, like me, these folks make your life a hell of a lot easier. They are very friendly and take time to explain exactly which parts do what. One guy even explained to me how to lock my bike properly. It is easy to see that the staff are passionate about what they do, and the prices are very fair. Also, if you need something fixed, they are FAST at repairs!! Although I live in close proximity to this place, I really can't see myself going anywhere else for my bicycling needs. read more

I'm far from a bike expert, but the staff here have always gone out of their way to listen to my requirements and outline my options. Beyond that, they've even helped me to recover my stolen bike. Very knowledgable and quick to ascertain what the problem was with my bicycle. Their labour costs are pleasantly low and my bicycle runs better than it has in a long time. They did however underestimate the time it would take for a part to arrive by quite a bit and never called to let me know the bicycle was ready. read more

I've gone to these guys three times and every time have had a sub-par experience. I bought a bike basket there but had to come back the next day to have it installed since they were busy (not a problem). Came back the next day and the guy said there is no way he could install it. I told him I was just there the day before and his co-worker took a look at my bike and said there'd be no problem installing it. After some convincing to even try, he finally installed it. Turns out that he did it wrong and it damaged my front brake making me having to replace the spring on the brake. They're overpriced and don't have the knowledge that other bike shops in Philly do. Even though it's convenient for me to get there I'm definitely taking my business elsewhere. read more
