Walked in talked to Mike sitting at the door. Conversation started off nice enough. Started asked some basic questions he should be able to answer. He was nice at first, then I asked about tune ups. He said the prices start at 30 and up. So I asked him up to what. He replied $25 million. The shop is a mess. It's littered with bikes everywhere so I questioned where the work gets done since I barely fit in the door. I made a comment from a business side that the store didn't have a good appearance to it not being organized. He told me he just climbs over the mess. Well his attitude totally changed and he basically told me to get out of his shop. I would never have my bike repaired there! If you can't take some feedback in a customer service business. You don't deserve business especially not my business. I'll spend my money someplace else! read more

I've been coming to Dr. Cycles for bike flats and fixes for years, and I always leave in awe. Michael is a one-man operation and a mystery. He leaves his cell phone number taped to the door when he's not there. Where does he go? How has he kept this running by himself all these years? He's a man of few words, but he's incredibly good at what he does- honest, skilled, inventive. One time I showed up with a seat from an exercise bike to replace my stolen saddle. He looked it over for a bit without comment, then got a saw and cut it down to fit. Good to go within minutes. And he charges you next to nothing. He used to be in the National Guard, but now he runs a bike shop because, well, bikes are way cooler (and because he's really passionate about them). This guy is to cycling what Jeremiah/The Alley is to haircuts. Like Jeremiah, he's a one-man operation, cheaper than the competitors (Trophy and Firehouse, I'm looking at you), and gives way better service. He's incredibly helpful. I stopped in one Sunday, with no money in my pocket, just to ask a few questions about the care and maintenance of my bike. He answered everything and aired up my tires while I was there! He wasn't annoyed that I came in without an intention of buying anything, and he didn't judge me for riding an old Schwinn - unlike the kids at Firehouse. All I can say is you have to be kidding me! This is not a real bike shop. I have tried to stop there twice and he wasn't open. Don't depend on the hours listed in yelp or Google. He is never open when he is suppose to be. When I did make it into the shop for a tune up I was very dissatisfied. He can't tune a derailleur, he can't adjust brakes. He doesn't know how to make a bike safe. When I tried to discuss it with him in a reasonable manner he ignored me. Its possibly the most sketchy bike shop I have ever been in. I break stuff. A lot. Including my bike. The good news for me? This guy runs a great place. This is a no-frills bike shop, so if you're looking for schmoozing and price-inflation, head over to EMS on 34th and Chestnut. If you need work done on a bike, head here. He is open 6 days a week (no Sundays), and they're willing to come down to pick up your bike, depending on if it is a reasonable distance or not. Given that I currently live less than a block away, I just chose to wheel over my dying bike. He was able to get me a new seat, new chain, and get all the work done for less than 1/3 of what EMS quoted me on the same, and did it while I waited. That's called a no-BS service, and I approve. The second time I was there, I needed some advice for purchasing a new seat from Amazon since the old one was starting to wear away, and I figured that since I'd been there before, he would be okay with helping me. Well... not only did he help me pick out a good one, he ended up ordering it for me from his wholesaler for 15$ less than the price online. Exact same product. Yeah, this guy is awesome. read more

Brought my bike to Bike Therapy today for a tune up and was told I needed a new chain and cassette costing nearly $200. Brought it to Doctor Cycles for a second opinion and all it needed was a tune up. Walked in and he fixed my bike within a couple of hours (Bike therapy said a tune up would take 3 or 4 days). Now my bike is driving good as new and no more squeaky rear tire! The guy who fixed my bike was named Mike and he seemed honest and explained everything he was doing to me. They have a menu type thing describing each level of tune up, cost and what it includes.. so they don't just charge you randomly what they think you'd be willing to pay. Very transparent bike shop. If I could give zero stars I would. I dropped my bike off back in May 2020. I have called many times. His voicemail box is full so I can never leave a message, and when he does pick up he just says "we are still working on it" and hangs up. I have showed up in person asking about my bike. Absolutely stellar affordable service. I had a problem with a chain that kept falling off: 2 previous bike shops and $70 later it still kept falling off. I went to this guy and he confirmed what I suspected all along (the derailleurs were too much misaligned). Fixed it for $20, had it the next day. The other shops (Wolf Cycle and Bicimundo), kept looking for other reasons besides the chain (tuning wheel, etc), reasons that were more expensive and would keep me coming back for more fixes. The prices are extremely fair and he usually has a rapid turn-around for simple repairs. Call the shop before you drag your bike there because he frequently has to leave the shop. I've never been so disappointed with an experience. I blew out my rear tube this morning on my way to work so just having an awful day already. Call this guy and ask him if I can come in at 4:30, he says he'll be there. I carry my heavy mountain bike 7 blocks to this place only to find that the door says "closed" and he'll be back at 6pm. I'm pretty upset but oh well. I go back to my place (still carrying by bike). Around 6:15, I head back, still carrying my bike. And WHADDAYA KNOW?! still closed. Two wasted trips carrying a very heavy bike a total of 28 blocks by the end of the night. And still didn't get my bike fixed. I will tell it on the mountain about this. I understand it's a "ma and pa" style shop. Very informal, but the very least you can do is be there when you say you're going to be there. read more

I came in to see about a slightly bent tire and ask about a second bike with the front fork bent after a bad accident. Mike was pleasant, straight forward and more importantly honest that a bent fork would be hard to fix. I ended up bringing the second bike over since I was down the street and Mike affirmed my worst fears. Good news that he said he'd be able to replace the fork and fix the bent tire for a flat $65. I spent no more than 5 minutes inside the shop and got exactly what I needed for much less than I anticipated. If your a serious bike rider with a professional road bike, this isn't the shop for you. I got a bike for free off craigslist because I needed a bike and I'm a broke college student. Brakes didn't really work and the tires were flat, but it was free so I took it. Brought it to Dr. Cycles to see if I could actually ever ride the thing, an hour and $40 later I rode it home with NO issues! One of the brake lines was seized and he told me to come back the next day if I wanted it replaced since that was when his shipment would come in. Thanks to him now I have a great $40 bike to ride to work and classes! :) He has a menu type deal for services/tune-ups so you pick what level you want a pay a flat fee. Such a bad experience. I have an old bike that serves my purposes but was recently abused by someone/thing while I was asleep. I woke up and my rims were bent slightly and my front reflector was smashed. Anyway, I already had bad brakes and shifters, so I thought it would be the perfect time to get a full tune up. Dr. Cycles was only a block away so I decided to give them a chance. I called ahead of time explaining the situation and asking for a quote. The gentlemen there said he would have to perform the second type of tuneup after I said my rim was bent, which would cost $40 and cover adjusting my brake handles, my shift lines, and fixing my squeaking pads. I dropped my bike off promising to pick it up again before the shop closed and again going over the things needed to be done. His nod was reassuring. I went after work to find he had ordered new shift lines and I would have to wait till noon the next day. So I did and went back. He hadn't put them on yet, so I came back at after work that day as well. I test road the bike and it definitely ran smoother, but the rims were still clearly bent and everytime the wheel spun the bulging part would scrape against the brake pads. I tested the breaks and they continued to squeak. The gears actually changed now but they were still very difficult to shift. I told him just these things and he took it back inside and returned. I tried it again without satisfaction. Then, he stopped caring. I didn't want to walk away with a broken bike, so I continued to tell him what was wrong and then he acted like I wasn't there and went into his shop and didn't come back out. I followed him in and began to talk again. I told him I didn't want to give him $40 for his work unless he changed a few things. He just said that it was an old bike and that it COULDN'T BE FIXED and then enlightened me about the world and how sometimes things break and can't be fixed, like cars and bikes. He gifted me with all type of strange examples: like how my college doesn't care about me and how my employer doesn't either. They only care about themselves, apparently. (Evading these irrelevant remarks) All I could say was that I brought the bike in the morning and see saw it before agreeing to fix it. He didn't test it out, which I recommended he do, but just took it in. I take that as an agreement on his part to hold his word and fix the things I highlighted. If it was IMPOSSIBLE to fix, I would've bought a new rim or gone somewhere else. He just ignores my remarks, noting that my bike is old and not fixable. I don't want to give him $40, so he takes $35. I give him a mean look of astonishment as I leave and he calls me back in with two fingers. He gives me another life lesson on... basically everything not related to my bike and then asks if I'd like my money back in return for his "complimentary" shift lines (hence the 1 for Quality). I didn't want to waste anymore time so I refused and left. I told him if I fixed it that I'd be back to show him. Anyway, I guess if you have a small fix, no bigger than a flat, I'd go here for its convenience. Otherwise, I'd spend my money at a well established facility and not here. read more

Dr cycles has definitely doctored his share of cycles and knows his stuff! I have a very old rusty aching bike that i've been struggling to revive and have spent a good 20 hours worth of bike church repairs on it. I just witnessed the guy fix it up in 15 minutes and when riding it back i had a large happy grin on my face since it rides so smoothly! He does mechanic repairs- so don't expect a magic wand wave that will prettify and alleviate years of wear and tear and rust. He did brakes, oiled and tightened it up, he trued my rear wheel and sent me on my merry way. Bike still looks beat up but it rides like new! And yes, the shop is an ocd nightmare but he knows his way around it. And why would you care? And yes, he is not very social. So if you want small talk and to spill your life's woes and joys- it's not going to happen! This shop is a book with a rough cover but meaningful content! 3 prices for tune-ups (40,60,120$) but is reasonable about your specific needs. Kind of feel weird to have handed 40$ for 15 min of work. BUT! It would have taken me weeks to get it done on my own! OR 70-90$ elsewhere( yes i checked and did my homework). read more

I bought a bike like a week ago, the brakes were weird, they made a noise and they were not tight enough, barely worked in my opinion. I took it to another place first and they didn't know what was wrong with the brakes. Today I took it to Dr. Cycles, he was extremely nice, I though I was going to have to leave the bike there for the day or something but he fixed it in 30 minutes, it is perfect now. They guy is a rip-off. He tried to sell some tires telling me they were used 'gator skin', they clearly weren't. He's good for a chain lube, and that's it. He's not even good enough for a tire change, he'll try using a mechanics wrench to pry you tire off thus grinding your rims, he doesn't give a f@$%. read more

Tiny shop right on Lancaster Ave. When I entered I was greeted by Mike, his shop has a very small working space where he is surrounded by bikes, parts, and junk. He was immediately available to service my weathered bike. His services included: Tire: $15 Tube: $10 Bike derusting/oiling: $5 Everything took about 15 minutes. It's his shop, he works all day and he's open until 8pm nearly every night. For $30 my bike rides like new and I'll definitely visit again when needed. read more

I have to admit that I am biased in giving this review 5 stars, but not without good reason. I went to get a flat fixed initially and it took all day bc Mike didn't get his shipment for inner tubes til later that day, but it actually worked for me, so I was fine leaving my bike there. The following week I got a flat again on the same tire and went back, he found a small shard inside and only charged me $5 for the fix and the new tube, which I thought was a great hook up. It's a small shop, it might as well be a garage, but you know what this is what your neighborhood bike shop was before it became gentrified. Dr. Cycles (Mike) was super-friendly, and listened completely to what I needed after efficiently fixing the small issue with the customer in front of me. My bike hadn't been tuned up since purchasing it, and I had just lost a screw anchoring my front brake to the post the night before. I read a useful Yelp review that said two things, and I will add one of my own. 1- Call ahead and ask when a good time to come is 2 - ~ish: be relaxed about precise times. the vibe here isn't frenetic or hurried, but Cycles never stops moving that I saw. 3 - Be Classy. A tip goes a long way for rush service. Again, be classy about it. The work will be worth it. I needed a fair amount of work on the frame, a full teardown, cleaning, and oiling of the bike, and installation of a few parts he needed to order, including a new helmet. He beat the weekend, and thus earned my bonus. The frame passed a finger-wipe test with no grit visible or palpable. The wheels spun orders of magnitude better,, with much less friction and sound. I rode the bike around the neighboring streets to test it out before I rode home. He had tuned up all the brakes so well that I was shocked by how tight they were in comparison to before the tune-up. In addition, Cycles noticed I lacked a small safety feature, and threw it in with the rest. I had to go back and thank him for how safe he had made my ride. For speed, quality of work, and emphasis on safety, Dr. Cycles gets my vote. read more

I like this guy. That being said, because it is a one man show, the place is subject to unannounced closings. However, just wait on the bench outside and he'll be back within at most 15 minutes. He's not the most sociable person. I would try to start small talk with him and he would respond with one or two word answers. But the bottom line is he knows what he is doing and he is CHEAP. Went here to get help putting a tight tire back on a wheel. Took one look at the shady storefront this guy operates out of and almost left, but decided to give the benefit of the doubt. Bad idea. He managed to get my tire back on by wedging it on with tire levers, but also pinch flatted my brand new (just out of the box) tube in the process. No apology, and didn't offer me a new tube, and then kind of acted like I was in his way as I stared in disbelief at what had just happened. I'm probably lucky he didn't try to charge me. Got a very bad vibe from this guy (he has zero interpersonal skills) and his "shop," which is really just a tiny run-down storefront that doesn't even resemble a legitimate business. Also saw him handle some people's bikes pretty roughly. Avoid if you have a decent or nice bike that you care about getting fixed correctly. read more
