This location is crazy small for a super Walmart. The Meat section is a third the size of the Walmarts we frequent in the DFW area. All of the chicken, pork, and beef are all stuffed into one tiny fridge section that's maybe all of 14 feet long. The grocery shelves are near as long either. This one looks like they had a regular country Walmart, added another set of doors, and added the other items that makes it a "super" Walmart. I did take a walk through the garden section, they do have a fairly large selection of house plants. They had several shelves worth, a lot on clearance. Overall, it was a clean location, been renovated at some point, could tell by the flooring, all of the old tiles are gone.

I'm actually kind of surprised there is nothing in the mall, given that Nacogdoches is a "college town", and albeit students are generally considered "cash poor", a large percentage of the money they do have is considered disposable income. Anyhow, Lufkin Mall in Lufkin (30 minutes south) is MUCH better. It actually has national brand stores (Aeropostale, Hot Topic, American Eagle).

The thing is, locals know that Huntsville is a bit of retail wasteland. Always has been. There have been complaints about a lack of good stores and decent restaurants as long as I can remember. Westhill mall is an ambitious and failed attempt to correct that. As far as it being part of a "country hell". I grew up here and returned after living in some of the greatest cities in the world. I know how good and bad Huntsville is. The lack of a 'real' mall doesn't even register on my radar. I can't imagine true mall culture in this town. Just thinking about a Hot Topic in Huntsville makes me laugh. West Hill mall does make a good place to get in a little light walking in the middle of our 100 degree summers. In fact, a lot of people use it for that instead of driving 15 miles out of town to New Waverly, or, for that matter, going to the public walking tracks in town, or the multiple gyms, the large state park, the public swimming pool, or the state of the art university facilities. Older people, in particular, prefer West Hill mall for their exercise. I am not claiming West Hill Mall is adequate by 'mall' standards, but if you come to Huntsville expecting the same retail amenities as a large city or a wealthy suburb like the Woodlands, you are highly delusional and set up for disappointment.
