Went to visit a puppy (at his PUPPY MILL). He brought out 4 puppies. All very dirty, runny eyes, and very unkept. Definitely scared of him and not socialized. When the puppies were left alone I saw the most bizarre behavior. They all started swirling and spinning around each other. It was nuts!! The price went up by $500. The cruel man got mad because I decided not to buy due to all the ugliness. My family bought a dog from family puppies in 2023. We absolutely adore our dog but he has so much PTSD. He is beyond clingy and legitimately has to be next to someone 24/7 as I believe this is an attempt to be safe. He shakes and is terrified by loud noises. This is not typical skittish dog behavior... it's a trauma response. Additionally, the vet said he had bad teeth on our first visit, and they were covered in plaque, and he could tell he wasn't taken care of well. Our dog is also cognitively low in the fact that he still does not know his name and 2 years old. This dog is our life, and we wouldn't change a thing about him but beware as I believe the older dogs are not treated well here :( I hope this business can make some right changes for the dogs. read more

We adopted a 14 month old cockapoo from family puppies Feb 26, 2024. He showed us about 8 dogs about the same age in a small pen. His handling was rough with the dogs and not all that friendly. Asked to wait in our car as they bathed him. One pup caught our eye and we couldn't leave him. There is no way they are socializing the older dogs. it was two weeks before he would eat. It was over a month before he would come into the house on his own. He still doesn't come to us when called. He will go sit by the fence and let us pick him up. He is a loving dog and will come to us when we are sitting on our couch. But he will not let us pick him up when we are standing up in the house. He is still skittish to loud noises and any change to routine. My wife and I are both retired so we have been able to spend a lot of time with him. We are slowing seeing him change into a more normal trusting dog. We have had a lot of dogs in the past and he has been our biggest challenge. Family puppies is a puppy mill and do not have the time to socialize all the dogs they have. We wouldn't trade Ernie for any other dog. If you don't have the time we have, do not get an older dog from him. read more

Breeder was very brisk in emails, never attempted to call. I attempted to set up a zoom call to see the puppies but the breeder never fully agreed to this. Waited for contact back, but it never happened until breeder responded to what I believed to be a kind email sent to him, with anger and unprofessionalism. I would be worried to get a puppy from this person, due to the anger that was directed at me for the breeders lack of communication. The anger directed at me, a stranger, makes me concerned for anger potentially directed at the home, specifically the puppies. Recently, I made an appointment to look at a puppy and an older dog that he had for sale online. The older dog was not brought out as I had requested and the breeder seemed confused as to what puppy I had asked to see. He had no idea who was who based on the published names and told me they didn't really have names which makes one wonder how you could keep track of shots and keep good records on purchases. It sounded like there were dozens of dogs barking in the building onsite. It was hot and I hoped they had air conditioning, especially with their long, overgrown coats, but that was likely wishful thinking. He would not allow me to see the parents or even a picture of them. For some reason, the puppies he had brought out looked nothing like their pictures online. He said it was the lighting. They also did not have that classic cavapoo face and looked a little odd, with very small eyes and oddly shaped heads. The poor things were skinny and very hand shy at first, cowering as though I would hit them but soon started vying for my attention once they saw that I was gentle and kind. I decided not to buy one as they were expensive compared to other puppies online and not what I had expected for the price ($1500). Mainly though, I did not like where they were being kept or the condition of the older puppies (very long, unkempt coats.) I felt so bad for them as I left because they started barking wildly and trying to get free from their pen and follow me. They seemed to be desperately begging me to take them with me. I was tempted to go "save" one but decided not to support this business with my money. Everyone who has an uncomfortable feeling about any breeder should act accordingly. You may save one puppy but think of the parents and all of the other puppies to come. I'm not saying he is a bad breeder (although the Humane Society seems to think he is), just that the things I saw and heard made me uncomfortable with giving him my business. Months later, even though the same puppies are still showing up online, he seems to keep breeding more. Some of the pups are growing old there. Also, online he sometimes says the dogs are cared for by his children but when I asked if one of the pups had started potty training and if he was good with children, he said they didn't get outside much and had never been around a child. Perhaps his "children" are all adults? Some of the very old pups (12 months - two years) suddenly disappeared from his website. I wonder what happened to them. We wound up finding a wonderful puppy from a local part-time breeder who raises one litter at a time in their home. They are located in our own state and we are thrilled with the new addition to our family. We can tell our little one was raised by caring people and that means a lot to us. read more

We traveled out to Family Puppies from Illinois to meet Dave and his puppies. Dave was very responsive via email when we first started our research months ahead. When we were ready to bring one home, we contacted Dave again to let him know. He was very flexible as our plans had changed a bit and we asked if we could come out earlier. When we arrived, he had 3 puppies out that had the features we were interested in, female, red, curly hair. All 3 looked very healthy and happy. We would have loved to have a look around and check out all of the ones he had available, but I'm sure it's hard to keep them all "presentable" all the time and also I imagine it reduces the risk of people bringing in potential sources of infection/germs to the other pups. Once we made our choice, Dave gave us the info we needed for shots and what she had already had. He gave us a bag of food that lasted us a couple days and he had supplies there that we could purchase if we hadn't already such as an appropriate size crate. He also offered to bathe her before we left, as we had concerns for our son that has allergies to other types of dogs which she may have been near. Once home, we named her Daisy (previously Alaina) (Dave did tell us they reuse names so you might see some duplicates on his site, I'm sure they know the pups get renamed anyways), she took very well to her crate and slept in it all night letting us know once in the middle of the night that she had to go potty. She was almost immediately potty train..... A couple accidents, but a quick pick her up and take her outside and she learned within a week. We have had her for about a month and a half now and she's only had a couple accidents in the house which were mostly us not doing our part and paying attention. She sleeps all night. Other than stealing a random shoe she hasn't chewed a thing! She has found her voice though lol. She plays very well with other dogs and only time she nips, is if she's playing. She is as sweet and lovable as can be. We took her to the vet on day two and they said she checked out great, no issues. They said we were very lucky with her and got a "gem"! Thanks Dave! I emailed Family Puppies looking for a Cockapoo, I asked if I was able to meet the parents of the puppies that were available and David C. said that I wouldn't be able to see the parents and there were puppies available and ready for purchase on sight. He said the puppies are born in his house, but I wouldn't be able to meet the parents because that'd be too much interaction. I don't want to play with the parents of the puppies, I would just like to take a peek and see that the parents are there. Not having the parents on sight or being secretive about the puppies' parents is puppy mill warning sign #1. Puppy mill warning sign #2 is that he is selling many different breeds, Cockapoos, pootons, havanese, and French bulldogs. I googled his name and he came up with the key word "puppy mill." There were articles on him, and it looks like he's not new to this business. I am so happy with the cockapoo puppy I got! Buddy (formerly named Jasper) is the best puppy! He adjusted to my home very quickly (within 24 hours), loves my other dog, and is great with other people and dogs too. He is very sweet, well behaved at the vet, and really smart! I brought him to the vet the first day I brought him home, and he's very healthy with no problems. He was socialized early at Family Puppies, which is good and probably why he's so friendly. He is going to be trained to be a therapy dog and will be perfect for that because of his sweet, gentle, and calm personality. Nappanee, Indiana: David Chupp, Family Puppies--Complaints about sick puppies; breeder had more than 100 unvaccinated dogs on the property with no recent veterinary visit. David Chupp was previously USDA licensed, but cancelled his license in 2013 after receiving a number of violations. He is now licensed by the state but not USDA. According to state records, in June 2019, the Board of Animal Health received a complaint via the Better Business Bureau that alleged Chupp sold a sick puppy who later died. The buyer said they did not receive veterinary records for the puppy, and "the puppy purchased was said to be 8 months of age" but had not been vaccinated for rabies. Most states, including Indiana, require that any puppy over three months of age have a current rabies vaccination and proof thereof. In July 2019, a state employee contacted Chupp and documented the following concerns: "Mr. Chupp remembered the incident that involved a sick puppy that died last year in 2018. He did not have the records readily available, but said he would send the records to me as soon as he looked them up [...] We asked Mr. Chupp if the 8 month old puppy had a rabies vaccination, and he said he did not know. I questioned him if he kept vet records on the puppies that went to [the] vet and he said no that would be too hard to keep straight which puppy went and keep that record with them. I told him he would have to figure out a system to keep track of vet records on puppies and pass those records on to the consumer. I told him as a participant in the state's commercial dog breeder broker program it is required to provide consumers with a copy of the dog's vaccination, medication, and treatment records. We also told Mr. Chupp that any puppy over 3 months of age needed to be vaccinated for rabies by a licensed, accredited veterinarian before it was sold or left the property for another reason such as a trade. We also discussed that the CBB program requires that a veterinarian be present on the property within the last 12 months. Mr. Chupp had not had a veterinarian out to the property in the last 12 months." The Board of Animal Health employee later received some records from Chupp for the puppy, but the records did not show that the puppy ever received a rabies vaccination. They required Chupp to have a veterinarian visit the property and vaccinate all of the dogs (more than 100). The inspector wrote, "In conclusion, David Chupp violated several of the state's commercial dog breeder broker program requirements. He sold an 8 month old puppy without a rabies vaccination. He also has not been meeting the requirements of the state's commercial dog breeder broker program by having a veterinarian out to the kennel property within the last 12 months." As a former licensee with the USDA, as well as a state-licensed breeder and alleged AKC breeder, Chupp should have been well aware of the basic care standards for dogs, basic veterinary protocols, and the rabies vaccination requirements. He advertises puppies for sale through his website, family-puppies.com. Although his ads offer to ship puppies sight-unseen, as of April 13, 2020, Chupp does not appear to have an active USDA license, which would be required for such sales. We recently purchased a puppy from Dave. I thought we were going somewhere that we could see and play with all the cavapoos and choose the best fit for our family. He had 4 puppies available for us- all about 14 weeks old. 2 wouldn't interact at all, one had a cropped tail and hernia and the other was happy to give kisses so that's the one my daughter chose. When we got her home she was terrified. She wouldn't move and we had to carry her everywhere. The next day she enjoyed being outside but then would only either stay where we put her or go in her cage if inside. I had a health check done on her and they had some things come up that we were enough concerned about that I reached out to Dave. He said it wasn't an issue and many people purchase dogs with small issues. We decided we were going to return her. He sent me a video of my other options and the dogs looked like they had never been in the house before. There was no talking in the video just something maybe hitting a wall or countertop to get their attention? It was strange. The vet noted she seemed under socialized and that we would need to be very intentional to make sure we got her out and about and used to people. They also don't call the dogs by names? He didn't even know which dog we were purchasing. He argued about refunding us our money and tried to keep some because he had to take time to give the dogs a bath before we came. We drove 2 1/2 hours each way and he wanted to keep $50 for doing his job... He has a nice property but many many barking dogs inside an outbuilding and no information to share on the mom besides she was a Cavapoo. I'll stop short of calling this a puppy mill because I didn't see in the barn but I wouldn't call these socialized, well bred dogs. I do NOT recommend. I purchased a Mini Italian Greyhound but when I arrived at the farm / puppy mill I was pretty shocked by the lack of transparency. They wouldn't let us go near the parents or see where they kept them. They brought them out in a small cage and wouldn't let us go near them. They were cowering in their cage and seemed afraid of humans. The owner also didn't seem attached to the puppies and couldn't answer any questions regarding their dispositions. I spoke to an Italian rescue group who said this puppy mill mistreats the dogs they breed. Definitely don't recommend them. read more

Wouldn't send me picture of parents of puppy and advised "too much of a hassle" for me to meet even though I was driving 6 hours total. So glad I Google searched "Dave Chupp Nappanee, IN" although I had to stop because I was crying so much. Called three local vets and they all confirmed he's a puppy mill and you should stay far far away. Neurological issues. All he talked about was profits and how he's not making any money off this. He doesn't care about the well being off the animal or that it's going to a good home. As soon as I questioned him, he advised I shouldn't own a dog? In 2012 he had a barn with 64 adult dogs and went in front of the village to get permission to build more barns. His neighbor with the same last name said he was okay with it....... He now has multiple barns. Karma. I wish someone would lock this guy in a cage. I hope he gets shut down and pays fines for animal cruelty. Ask to go in barns, ask to see parents, take lots of pictures and give to authorities. Can't believe he hasn't been stopped yet.
