It's sad to hear that the Saint Paul location on Dayton avenue is closed down I went there approximately 33 years ago I know that's quite a long time but they were so incredibly helpful and compassionate during a very troublesome and stressful time in my life I was having severe mental health issues and since my boyfriend's parents lived directly across the street I went there in midst of a psychotic crisis they treated me with complete respect and were not condescending at all they were so empathetic and one of the staff members even took the time to drive me the hospital to be checked in for a psych eval they went above and beyond even though they're now at a different location I hope that they are still doing incredible work. read more

This is a SAFE PLACE. One can feel it in the air when you enter. My child, who prefers they/them as pronouns, is currently seeing staff re. gender . They have been seen AND HEARD by caring, knowledgeable, professional people who are taking the time to educate and help them deal with extremely personal sexualty issues. I do not know all the technical terms but I CAN tell you that after a 17 year battle with many other less sensitive healthcare professionals my child is now becoming happier, more confident, and a mentally healthier individual. My child's patner is also seen here because she has an extreme reaction to needles. Family Tree is the only resource (after 7 other facilities) to supply the accommodation necessary for her anxiety control so a blood draw could be accomplished. The clinic has gone beyond any normal standard of care. Lastly, when visiting, I appreciate the calm attitudes, the unique waiting room, and the educational materials available. Family Tree is amazingly awesome. I was uninsured for several years during my roaring 20s and this was my clinic of choice. Family Tree's focus is sexual health, so I went here for my annual exam, birth control, and testing, but I also came here for checkups when I didn't feel well. Many of the physicians are Registered Nurses, which I found to be just as knowledgeable as doctors, but far more compassionate. I always felt comfortable and taken care of. I can't remember a single staff member ever being unpleasant. The prices are reasonable too. I can't recall specifics but I was uninsured and working as a line cook, so all services are definitely affordable. I'm pretty sure they work on a sliding scale. In addition to providing health care, Family Tree is also a nonprofit that offers community outreach and education. This statement is from the website: "Family Tree Clinic is committed to providing cutting edge, affordable, comprehensive reproductive and sexual health services to diverse communities. Part of this commitment is to offer dynamic and comprehensive education services to the community, schools, colleges, parent groups, corrections facilities, and a variety of workshops." I cannot say enough nice things about this organization. I recommend Family Tree as both a place to receive medical care and a local nonprofit deserving of your volunteer time and/or financial donations. In a world where profit drives health care, Family Tree stands out as a clinic that is committed to keeping their services affordable and accessible, especially for people who might otherwise go without medical care. My mom is the one who got me into Family Tree when I was uninsured. She was part of a counseling group here years ago when she had endometriosis. When I moved back to MN, without insurance, she told me to go here for check-ups. I've been with and without insurance over the years, and yet have remained a patient here. I always get answers to my questions, friendly advice from the doctor or NP and efficient staff. In some trying times, the staff even helped me figure out how to qualify for a state program that assists uninsured or low-income women with affording care. The difference between Family Tree and other clinics is vast. One of the most striking examples is how they *talk* to you. Every single person is very deliberate, kind and non-judgmental in how they speak with you in every step of the process. It's almost like...yes...like you're an actual person instead of just a patient to inspect and order around. Your appointment is about YOU, not standard operating procedure for all [gender/sexes]'s in age bracket [x]. There's no formula that gives them recommended treatment--they actually want to listen to you and figure out what's best for you based on your lifestyle, career, relationship status, etc. The culture of inclusion and non-judgment is absolutely apparent in every transaction; from the front desk to the waiting room, to the decor on the walls and the visit with the clinician. I first went to Family Tree when I was about 16. I stopped when I got my own insurance and they only covered 60-80% of any FT treatment/appt. Recently I found myself without insurance again (ehhem...ugh) and FT was the only even remotely affordable place to go for my yearly exam. (They have a sliding scale of fees and are very open about discussing payment plans, etc.) I really can't believe I ever stopped going there. If you're used to being treated at a standard clinic, the treatment you'll get at Family Tree will be absolutely refreshing. read more

I don't love having cells collected from my cervix :(, but I do love that there's a clinic as amazing as Family Tree that will do the deed :). I switched to Family Tree from a larger clinic (Aspen) when I decided I wanted a smaller, more specific clinic to look after my sexual health. I've seen Barbara and Beth and have had pleasant experiences with both. Exams are quick (not bad quick...just efficient) and you're talked through everything. Questions about birth control are answered thoroughly and they'll explain all your options to try and find the best fit for you/your life. I had a conversation with Beth while I was there and she touched on current suggestions for when to start getting pap smears, how often they should be done, and all the new information on hpv (how aggressively it should be treated depending on a woman's age, the gardasil vaccine, etc.). She really knew her stuff which was encouraging, especially considering the amount of controversy surrounding those topics in recent years. FTC also offers STI tests (including those that require blood work) and rapid HIV testing. There are options for those that are uninsured including a sliding fee scale and certain free services if you're eligible for The Minnesota Family Planning Program. Family Tree really puts an emphasis on creating a "safe" environment. You won't be judged, the professionals are there to make sure that you stay as healthy and safe as possible. And guys! It's not just a clinic for women. They offer a variety of men's health services as well. One word of advice. New patients will receive a little card with their family tree number on it. Don't. Lose. This. Card. I know mine is around somewhere...but I called and wasn't even able to find out when my last appointment had been without it. They really focus on privacy so if you don't have that number, you have to show up in person to find out anything about your account. read more

Family Tree is an amazing, wonderful, godsend of a clinic. I came in uninsured. Not only did they see me, but they helped me get access to low-cost healthcare options that I didn't even know I qualified for. Thanks to them, I am now enrolled in a program where I get free birth control and annual exams. They are kind, respectful, and never talk down to you. Beth and Barb are my favorite providers there - they are both just great, and wonderful to work with. Yesterday I had an IUD put in at Family Tree. Barb did the procedure, and she was wonderful. I was incredibly nervous and apprehensive, but she put me at ease right away. She told me everything she was doing before she did it, never seemed impatient if I needed an extra moment to take a deep breath, and talked me through the entire procedure. She made it a breeze! I cannot recommend this clinic enough. They are WONDERFUL. If you can't pay, they'll put you on an affordable payment plan or see if you qualify for a low-income health insurance option. My mom currently is battling cancer in her vaginal reproductive areas. I came in asking for a hormone panel for myself due to the fact that I suffer from severe pms symptoms as did my mom for many years. I was shook up and definitely explained my concerns to the doctor. She was nice although she didn't seem to feel testing my hormones to be a necessity despite my mom having cancer. I want to take proper precautions for my health obviously...Nevertheless I got the blood test done and she assured me she would call in a week with the results...no one called! Maybe because I didn't get "on board" with their approach to just pop a pill which is a typical western way to resolve problems. My wanting more information made for more work for them. I absolutely love this clinic. I used to go to Planned Parenthood, but I had a bad experience with them, so I thought I would try Family Tree and boy I am glad I did! Through Hamline(where I go to school and teach Peer Education) one of their workers- Tatum , I believe- came and gave us a workshop and her presence was very inviting. I went here to switch my birth control (the pill to an IUD) and it was a great experience. The doctor was very nice and made the whole experience very comfortable and easy. Also they are part of the Minnesota Family Planning Programming and can help you get set up with that which is great. read more

I visited Family Tree for the first time today for an annual exam. I've had reasonably pleasant experiences at Planned Parenthood and a traditional gynecologist, but my visit to Family Tree wasn't just tolerable, it was about as pleasant as have cells scraped from inside your body can be. All of the staff I encountered, from the receptionist to the medical assistant, nurse practitioner, and lab tech, were all friendly, efficient, and had good communication skills. Beth was my nurse practitioner and she was great! She answered all of my questions thoroughly and addressed my concerns about getting an IUD with both clinical information and input from former patients. She was friendly but didn't try to get my entire life story while poking and prodding me, which I appreciated. While in the waiting room I overheard several very pleasant staff interactions. The staff seem to have a good rapport with each other which I bet has a lot to do with the general feeling of friendliness around the clinic. When employees are happy they do a great job! I would definitely recommend Family Tree to anyone, man or woman, who wants to be responsible about their sexual health. read more

I still cannot say enough good things about Barbara and the team. Even though I moved to NE Minneapolis, I will still make the trek over to Midway to come to this clinic. I more recently had an IUD put in, and Barbara did the procedure (she's the one I've been seeing all along..from the rash in the beginning!) She met with me first to get counseling on the process and make sure I wasn't already pregnant. She also gives you time to think about what IUD you want to use-the copper or mirena. I scheduled the appointment a month later and had it done right after christmas. I was nervous because several people I know had just gotten it in and said it was very painful. Barbara moved quickly and efficiently while still talking me through the procedure. While it was extremely uncomfortable and a pain I had not felt before, Barbara was so sensitive and tried to finish quickly to put me more at ease. She ran to get me water and a jolly rancher because I was feeling a little queasy and let me rest as long as i needed. Well, I made it home that night, but thanks to Barbara I didn't pass out on the way. Please consider going to this clinic, man or woman, if you need reproductive health care. I haven't been back since my insertion, but I will definitely return when the time comes. read more

I want to say first that Family Tree as a whole is a great clinic. It was my last experience with a particular counselor that I take issue with. Family Tree is one of the rare places that offers walk-in, confidential counseling, which is amazing. The first time I used that service I was seen by a very petite woman with an accent (I don't remember names all that well and I'm leaving race out as an identifier) and she was absolutely wonderful. You don't have a lot of time since there are others waiting, which is understandable, but she was able to get the issue right away and understand what was happening. She was compassionate and professional and I had agreed to see her again at a particular time the following week. The following week, I had arrived early and due to some misunderstandings I was seen by another woman. This woman was larger and walked with a limp. It's my experience with her that led me to write this and give Family Tree a 3 star. I've had counseling in the past and have seen a variety of personalities, but she was by far one of the worst I've ever had. When I was trying to explain my backstory, she questioned it with a skeptical tone, basically insinuating that I was lying. In addition to that, she talked about herself more than we talked about my issue. I have never known any counselor or therapist talk about their personal life, and I'm not one myself, but I'm pretty sure that's a huge breach, if anything for safety reasons. At the end, I was basically told to "just get over it". Seriously...that's the professional advice you give someone who is crying in front of you? If I could "get over it" I wouldn't be seeking counseling, especially from someone who wants nothing other than to talk about herself. I felt worse leaving than I did arriving. On the way out, however, I ran into the petite woman I was supposed to have seen. We chatted about the misunderstanding and will hopefully see her next week again. In conclusion, I understand a lot of this is volunteer, and I think it's absolutely wonderful that people will give up their personal time and offer their services to help those in need of them. Family Tree helps so many people, and does wonderful things for the community. One person shouldn't be a reflection on the clinic as a whole, and if anyone is reading this, who is depressed and needs to talk to someone, please get help and give this place a try. However if you get paired with a larger woman with a limp you're probably going to be better off on your own. read more

What more can I say about this place. The staff is very welcoming, the nurses are amazing, and the atmosphere above friendly. The clinic nurse Dawn is amazing, go to her for anything!
