With a wide range of fresh fruits and vegetables outside the front of the store, this is one of few convenience outlets you can purchase something healthy and fresh. The inside of the store is set up superbly with a useful selection things you would find in a supermarket. With the incredible booze selection you'd be forgiven for thinking the people of Kentish Town had a drink problem. Saying that on the night I popped into Everbest Food and Wine there was a lady careering across Kentish Town Road clearly out of her mind, unable to see the big shiny metal death wagons hurtling towards her. Luckily her not quite so smashed friend who had a glass of Lambrini or two less, dragged her to the safety of the pavement. The downside of this well provisioned independent store is the inflated prices. There seems to be a trend of local stores selling food stuffs at a much higher price than the supermarkets. Thus if you have the energy, it is worth your while checking out the branded stores down the road. But if you are just after a quick compulsive buy, Everbest is excellent.

Ok this is where my happiness ends. I really do not like Tesco Express, 'Metro' supermarkets that are essentially a fancy convenience store. The Kentish Town Tesco does not have a large range of products and they are far more expensive than there proximal competition. Maybe I am just growing an unnecessary dislike to chain stores. If I have to use one I'll go to Iceland or Somerfield that better for my pocket.

There is nothing that makes this store worth travelling miles just to see (it is, after all, just a grocer-type place) but when your are here you'll see that it is worthy of it's four stars. It does indeed sell everything you would expect of a convenience store - with a healthy alcohol section (substantial, not necessarily good for you) - but that should only really equate to 3 stars in my eyes. The fourth star is awarded for the level of cleanliness and the sense of order here at G Express. ALL of the aisles are well stocked with a large variety of goods, neat, tidy well arranged. But the best part of it is that G Express became the first place where it was so clean I could see my own reflection in the floor! THE FLOOR! Alright, it's not like looking straight into a mirror but the are definite outlines and facial features visible, I could clearly see me - in the floor! Awesome floor. That aside, the staff are all quite chilled and friendly and an impressive modern computer system is running there which includes a large flat-screen TV which doubles up as their CCTV when their not watching football or their favourite show. Be sure you get a fresh loaf though, because sometimes they have breads on display that are a day old and they have really lost much of their deliciousness! In fact, a trip to preserve fresh bread is to slice it all up when it's still fresh and put it in the freezer! Furthermore, the folks at the Highgate Corner Shop make quite nice sandwiches and you can actually decide what goes into (or onto?) your sandwich...and the sandwiches are really cheap! I only wish they would use the nice whole-meal bread that they are selling by the loaf to prepare your sandwich - but I guess the rather typical English clientele still prefers their white toast...

They have organic bread, delicious walnut brown bread and a vast selection of other types which are fresh everyday. The delicatessen has a lovely range of cheeses, salads, chicken skewers etc and the best ever tasting humous which visitors to our place who try it all remark on. They sell a huge variety of products compared to Tesco and if you ever run out of anything or need anything, how ever obscure, the corner shop will have it! The owner is very friendly and the lovely lady on the delicatessen counter and all in all it has a wonderful community feel. Sadly, it will be coming to an end in December 2015 because due to the landlord increasing the rent extortionately, the corner shop will have to close after the owners long fight to keep it open and after 35 years of owning it! What will Highgate do without it and it's lovely friendly shop keepers.
