When we rode in with our family after biking, the staff were not very welcoming and, in fact, made us feel like we were imposing on them. As very low maintenance travelers, we found it odd that this vibe was given off and we found it uncomfortable. Hard to exactly say what it was, but we found that we always felt that we were doing something wrong...not a fond feeling when traveling! The food was also unreasonably expensive. $22.00 pp for breakfast! No thanks!

The inn is about 1 km SE of the center of Val-David on Lac Dore, a small, quiet lake (no power boats). The inn has a private swim beach, dock, and platform. The inn is easily accessible from the rail trail, though not obvious. We arrived in the afternoon and were given rooms in an annex building across a quiet street. Our rooms had therapeutic baths, rather than showers, so we asked to be moved to rooms with showers, and they seemed happy to switch us. Since we were across the street, our rooms did not have a view of the lake, but the rooms were comfortable, air conditioned, and nicely furnished, if somewhat oddly arranged. The beds were very comfortable. We seemed to be the only occupants in the annex, and the doors of the unoccupied rooms were left standing open, so we walked around and looked into some of the rooms. Some of those bedrooms were truly luxurious! But those rooms had the therapeutic baths, not showers. The inn provided secure storage for our bikes in a separate building. It was a fairly hot day for Quebec, so we spent some time swimming in the lake before dinner. Just lovely. Kayaks and paddleboards were also available at the beach. Dinner was outstanding, and the service was excellent. The tables look out over the lake, a lovely setting. Apparently, breakfast is normally served starting at 9 am, but we asked if we could have breakfast at 8 am, to get an earlier start biking. Again, the staff seemed happy to accommodate us, and we were served breakfast at 8 am. Breakfast was also excellent. Definitely staying here again next time we are in the area. Note: All of the rooms at this inn are apparently different. The majority of the rooms seem to have therapeutic baths, not showers, so if you require a shower, make sure that you reserve a room that has a shower. The annex building is across a quiet street, so those rooms do not have a view of the lake. But they are otherwise very nice rooms.

We also had a cider which was crisp, clean, and refreshing. Other reviews suggested a bias against English speakers. But, we saw none of that. The staff was kind and patient with my questions and non-existent French. Probably my favorite meal of a short trip loaded with great meals.

For the price the room was not bad ($79) but if it was higher it would be overpriced. They offered another room they had renovated but it lacked a place to put your clothes like drawers, hangers, coat rack.No chairs either. Just a bed and bathroom. No coffee maker. I declined it. The place needs major renos.There was no breakfast either. It would've helped. The closest small grocery store is a 10 minute walk and there's a Tim Hortons, about a 15 minute walk. The motel is on a highway, so not much around. Maybe a couple restaurants open later in the day. Typo-the room is very outdated. I haven't been there for a while so maybe it's improved. I can't understand why that room had European furniture in the Laurentians. The new owners aren't European either. It's the only room like that. Oddball place.

The chicken dishes were the exact same ingredients just arranged differently, and the lasagna could only contend with Chef Boyardi. The dessert was obviously pre-purchased and tasted like grocery store cakes. Just not very pleasant.

The main dining room is stunning and overlooks a lake, an amazing view to compliment your meal but if you want to be seated by a window, you should reserve way in advance! They have an excellent wine selection and the dishes are lush. They are beginning to incorporate vegetarian options but overall, expect lots of meat and fish. If you can, try the foie gras, they make it really memorable. My mom did find her quails a bit cold but my veal was to die for. For birthdays, you get glasses of Kir on the house! The staff is really lovely and have made the effort to remember us, which is always appreciated. The recession has struck everyone, and it's nice to see that La Sapinière has tried to adapt: they 3 course table d'hôte is a couple dollars short of $40, the 5-course meal being under $60, an absolute steal (as everything used to be over $80 a couple of years back). Thankfully, they haven't sacrificed quality in any way. The decor is cozy and warm, the hotel was built in the 60s and it still has that slightly retro flavour (carpeted floors, big leather chairs, swiss-chalet style).They try to cater to all sorts of clientele,but I'd say this isn't the most kid-friendly hotel. The bar really stylish and right next to a mahogany pool table and an intimate dance floor. If you feel extra fancy, you can rent you own little bungalow outside the hotel! The bed was super comfortable and the innkeeper was charming and helpful. The breakfast was delicious and healthy. Definitely a great choice if you are up this way.

We made a simple little dinner in the well equipped kitchen, and enjoyed the evening drinking beer and eating strawberries we had brought ourselves, while playing pool in the old bar in the basement. The room was nice with a view into the forest. The have rooms with bathroom and rooms with shared bathroom.
