Updated 12/21/2015: Staying true to my word, I'm giving them five stars. They fixed the lighting issue and it is a great place to climb. They are renovating a large portion in the back corner, so some of the routes are limited. The gym has amazing potential and is a very comfortable and fun atmosphere to go climbing. Great bouldering gym, with aggressive walls/ caves to climb out of. Not good for rope climbing, but awesome for bouldering

I had been to the gym years ago but recently I went back to check it out as I had heard it was under new ownership. New owner is really cool dude with the chillest vibe. Staff is basically The Who's who of local climbers and they seem to love the job and the place and take pride in making it a great gym. Mostly a constantly evolving bouldering setup with a few rope climbs for beginners and kids. I quickly found out how out of shape I am but my kid loved it and we got him a monthly membership and he has been going every spare moment for a couple months solid now. I was surprised the fees had gone way down and we're very reasonable without any weird cancelation rules like a reviewer mentioned in another review here. Final word is the place is worth checking out and is a great gym for bouldering and awesome for kids and the owner and staff deserve our community support. Cheers! read more

This place is awesome! Good place for a nice workout without it being too crowded. There's a small section of weights for use as well. Nice building, although the mats could use some cleaning. Clean bathrooms. Routes are clearly marked and staff is more than willing to help. Climbers I meet here are always really nice and would give you pointers. I would come more often if it wasn't so expensive. (I think I paid $13 for shoe rentals and for one day of climbing) But they also have packages and memberships and it helps if you come early in the day to get your money's worth. (Although I usually gas out after like an hour.) A really cool place for Arcata overall. I hear it's under new management. Excited to see the changes, although Matt was a really cool guy. Update: prices have gone up but the membership prices are extremely affordable! read more

Great bouldering facility. Pleasant and helpful staff. The climbs are challenging; no soft grades as are usual in southern California. Great spot to get a rainy day climb in and meet some cool locals. read more

Dirty, poorly maintained, terrible parking, dirty shoes and no staff on duty. Routs are not rated or marked well at all.

This place is a trip! Climbing gym and music venue rolled into one! I don't climb much, but this was a great place to learn to boulder. read more

Love this place. Great spot in town to get in a workout that's not too crowded. I like to use the weights, rings, and attend yoga classes in addition to climbing. They have a ton of discount drop-in nights too. Cool place to even just hang out with lots of friendly people, or to meet contacts for local outdoor climbing. read more

This is an ok to great climbing gym, it all depends on who is staffing. I think it is largely run by volunteers, so you never know what you are going to get. The facility is great, so that is all that really matters as long as the staff don't get in the way. read more

This is a great climbing gym. There are a range of bouldering routes to cater to all abilities, although the people who set the routes are very skilled and sometimes the route sets seem to cater more to advanced climbers. That said, you will never go there and find an absence of beginner routes. Being an intermediate climber may just be tough in general because most problems are either too easy or too hard. The gym is geared more towards bouldering, but there are top ropes set and the routes look alright from the ground. I haven't tried them yet myself. All in all I think this is a good climbing gym to check out. The staff are friendly, the owner Matt is very nice, there's a lot to check out, and in addition to climbing routes they have some other exercise equipment that is good for a warm-up or cool-down. read more

I've climbed at quite a few gyms and this is by far a good find. It's a smaller place but the routes are challenging (I think rated a bit too hard) and clever in comparison. Great for kids, great people working there, you can bring in your bike, Matt the owner is great. Don't pass Arcata on your road trip without climbing here. read more
