This new lunch spot is something quite different for the centre of the City, but will definitely find it's place in amongst the independent deli's and great places to grab something different on the go. Looking clean, basic and unassuming from the outside; even the name doesn't give away what this business does at first glance. I heard about this place through Twitter and had it bookmarked to visit for quite some time. After a busy morning on Friday, a hurried lunch on the go was the way forward and I remembered that I had promised myself a visit to 4023. After snapping some pictures of the exterior, I popped in to peruse the menu and decide what I was going to have. There is seating inside, but literally enough space for maybe 6 - 8 diners. The menu is small, but very well formed. You can choose from koftas, meze platters, wraps and salads and have these served to take away or eat in. After troubling over the selection for a couple of minutes, I decided to go for the lamb meatballs in a bread wrap to take away. Even with a busy venue, lots of orders coming in and a queue out the door; I got my order within 5 minutes. I took this to the Cathedral to enjoy a spot of winter sun whilst I ate my lunch. The meatballs were delicious. Hot, filling and tasty... The bread was obviously fresh and the salad was the perfect accompaniment. My lunch cost me £3.50 (just the wrap, no sides or drinks) and I felt this was good value for money as I wasn't hungry again until the late evening. I definately want to go back to sample some of their other specialities. If you want to eat in, get there early (as it's only a tiny place). If you're happy to take away (and create jealousy in the office), go and give this place a go!

The seemingly obtuse name references the geographic coordinates where Europe (Greece) meets Asia Minor, the area most known for the Mediterranean cuisine served at 40 23. It's Mediterranean street food at its best. The food finds a balance, not being too heavy or too healthy. The result is ultimate deliciousness. Forty Twenty Three is on the stretch of Stephenson Street that also hosts a Greek Deli next door. The businesses in this area of the city tend to fall on the small side, and 40 23 is no exception. The interior is tiny and spartan, with seating for about a dozen people. Fortunately, word has not gotten completely out, so unless you are there at noon or at the after work rush hour, you should be able to snag a stool at the counter and watch these pita masters assemble your food. If you don't want to leave the house, 40 23 has partnered with Deliveroo. It's hard to imagine not eating inside the restaurant, as you'll want to chomp on that pita as soon as it comes off the grill. The menu covers a range of goodies, with the hot items being composed of a small list of ingredients that work wonders in different combinations. At their most base, the dishes have a pita as a wrap or cut up on a platter with a salad. You essentially get to choose the filling, ranging from meats (souvlaki, chicken, meatballs, kebab) to vegetarian items (grilled veggies, halloumi, mushrooms). You'll also find several pastries and pies, like spanakopita, and desserts including a truly excellent baklava. I've been here many times for lunch and dinner in the past several months, and my go to is one of the vegetarian wraps. I've tried all three, and the halloumi is probably the best, when it's available. The wrap is either very, very popular or 40 23 is facing some serious supply side issues. The grilled mushrooms are my second favourite. The juicy mushrooms mixing with the other vegetables, wrapped in a warm pita is a little slice of heaven. Sides for your mains include rice, pita bread, vegetables, or chips. The hand-cut chips are the stand out item on the sides menu, so much so that you'll want to order your own (no sharing here). A row of spices in glass jars are placed at the counter in the event you wish to kick your food up a notch. If excellent street food in and of itself was not enough to get you in the door at Forty Twenty Three, then the fire sale prices should be intriguing. A veggie pita wrap without a side, which is more than enough for one average person, can be had for less than a fiver, including a drink. At these prices, you can support a local family run business using fresh ingredients, and still come out ahead of paying for corporate fast food. The sometimes varying hours, supply shortages, and lack of seating at times would normally be enough to warrant four stars, but the food here is so affordable, and so, so good that I hope everyone will run, not walk to city centre and see what the Mediterranean's best has to offer our street food scene.

Situated a little out of the way, but really easy to find when you know where it is (Head to Moor Street Car park opposite Selfridges, under the bridge and then follow the arches; literally 4 minutes walk from the Bullring), the Warehouse is a real treasure. Now run by two of the chefs from it's previous incarnation, the menu is always changing to offer the best seasonal local produce. As well as a range of food options, the juice and smoothies are also excellent. New flavor combinations are offered all of the time to help you get your 5-a-day in! The inside feels lofty and airy with hardwood furniture and floors. It's a lovely warm space that offers WiFi - and they now do "Bottomless" tea and coffee at selected times on weekdays if you're looking for somewhere new to work. Now... one of my favourite bits... It's BYOB! They have a very good selection of grown up soft drinks (Fentimans and the like), but if you want to take a nice bottle of wine or some beers in; it's up to you. It also keeps the cost of a meal down! The food isn't pub cheap, but is very good value for the quality and not what I would term as expensive. In summary, if you want to get some healthy food in you - head to Warehouse. Grab a bottle and I can guarantee you a comfy, delicious and reasonably priced dining experience!

We walked up Sadler Gate and looked a few menus on the way. We decided to stop and look at the menu at The Kitchen which had sandwiches, panini, burgers and salads. We stepped inside to a busy and buzzing cafe with solid wood tables and a huge cake counter. A waitress smiled and showed us to a table. I ordered a ham, cheese & caramelised onion panini which came with a handful of fries and a pot of tea. My partner had a Gourmet Angus Burger with chips and salad and a Diet Coke. Our drinks came promptly, my tea came in a pot for one with a cute bottle of milk like something out of Alice in Wonderland. Coke was in a glass bottle. We had a little wait for our food but it does state on the menu that there may be a wait for food on a Saturday due to being very busy. The table were full and people were constantly coming and going. Staff were very attentive and friendly. I was tempted by the cakes but resisted. There was a sigh saying all cakes are made by the boss on the premises. While we were sat there a person I assume is the boss came out with fresh cakes to replenish the empty spaces. I will have to go back for a pot of tea and a cake. We were not disappointed when our food came. My panini was yummy and my partners burger looked and I was told it tasted good. We finished and asked for the bill. It promptly arrived in a butter dish and I went to the counter to pay. It was a lovely lunch and extremely friendly & attentive staff.

I went here with my wife and two friends as part of a yelp event. First off, I should say that I'm an avid meat eater and don't typically go for vegetarian fare. However, Marmalade is the kind of restaurant that makes me want to eat vegetarian (or at least close to it) regularly. As an appetizer I got the coffee infused lamb rump with a prune glaze, sweet potato mash, and edamame beans. It came paired with The Duke of Earl non-alcoholic aperitif which was made with fresh lemon juice, jasmine and peach syrups, and chilled earl grey tea. Both of these were excellent. The lamb was cooked perfectly and the combination of flavors and ingredients was particularly unique. For the main course I got the marmalade garbanzo: chickpea patties served in a Mediterranean stew (with carrots, courgettes, and a couple other veggies) with balsamic glaze. I wasn't sure what to think at first because I thought this meal as a main wouldn't be very filling, but boy was I wrong. It came with three giant chickpea patties (essentially giant falafals) which I almost couldn't finish. They were delicious and were very tasty drenched in the stew sauce, so I powered through. I got the Captain Ahab's Grog, which was recommended with this meal, that consisted of Brugal Dry Spiced Rum, Ginger Preserve, Apricot Liqueur, Plum bitters, and pomegranate juice. This was my favorite beverage of the evening. Additionally, the drink paired particularly well with food and I found myself eating a bite and having a sip immediately afterwards so the flavors would mix. For dessert, I got the coconut panna cotta with pineapple, mint, and chili. Again, there's nothing bad I can say about this. It was delicious. I also got the Eu Te Amo cocktail which consists of Bombay Sapphire gin, Framboise Syrup, lime, and conde villar vegan wine. Now, I don't typically like gin or wine, but despite this I enjoyed this beverage (albeit not as much as the others). Last, but certainly not least, I want to comment on the great customer service we received. Our server, Faye, was attentive, helpful, and just plain nice. I very highly recommend Marmalade and will definitely be back there myself!

The standard of food and cocktails is exceptional, and the atmosphere is warm and friendly. The space is brilliantly designed as it occupies a good section of the Rep's lobby, and has a mix of tables and spacious comfortable booths. The food and drink impressed. I usually don't go into menu details, but it's really worth talking about. We started with the coffee-infused lamb, which was absolutely divine. It was paired with an aperitif of cold earl grey tea with jasmine and peach syrup. For the main course, a vegan dish! A new addition to the menu- the 'Marmalade Garbanzo', which is chickpea patties in a mediterranean stew. So good! And filling! Paired with 'Captain Ahab's Grog'-- a rum drink with ginger, apricot, plum bitters, and pomegranate juice! Yum! And finally dessert: a coconut panna cotta with pineapple and hot chilis. Nom nom nom nom. Service was friendly and attentive, and the menu was quite reasonable! Definitely worth going for a pre or post-theatre meal, or any other day of the week for that matter. I'll be back!

Luckily, in Birmingham Airport there are a few choices for food & drink and so this evening I decided to try All Bar One - located by gates 1-20 near where (I hoped) my flight gate would be. On arriving, I was greeted by a conscientious and unimposing waitress who wasted no time in getting my drink - and then food order. I'm a sucker for a Pinot Grigio Rose, and after a particularly long day at work, decided I deserved a large glass pre-flight. The wine arrives in a lovely little decanter, and is very easy to drink! I opted for the skinny burger - £9.95 for a burger on half a bun, topped with avocado & with a quinoa and edamame bean salad rather than fries. At only 522 calories it's a pretty decent choice for the calorie-concerned of us...although I did add a helping of Monterey Jack cheese. Because cheese. I love places which have a skinny option for burgers - but honestly I'm not sure the half bun concept works. It fell to pieces the second I tried to cut into it - so I ended up just eating the patty (and cheese) together before tackling the bun and the rest on its own. The patty was a bit dry, although by no means was it untasty (not a word but I'm going to make it one now...) The salad was very leafy - more leaf than anything else to be honest, but tasted nice enough, although I did feel a bit like a rabbit by the end of it. Price wise the burger was actually pretty decent for airport prices, and the wine was as I expected. If they can sort out the architecture issues of the skinny bun, they'd be doing really well.

This bar and restaurant is located in the Departures area of Birmingham Airport (South Lounge). The menu offers a modern interpretation of pub and burger bar staples, with something for everyone - everyone i.e. who is prepared to spend over 10 UKP for a simple burger with a few fries. That said, the pulled pork burger I had (see photo) wasn't huge but of decent quality and well prepared. You can order extras (like I did, a thick slice of halloumi cheese). I scanned the meals presented to other people at the surrounding tables, and everything sure did look good. I was pleasantly surprised by the range of lagers and ales, which included one of my all-time favorites Sierra Nevada Pale Ale (and on tap, too!), one of the great beers of the world. I strongly recommend this wonderful American IPA to people who have never tried it. As you may expect, drinks aren't cheap either. There's also a huge selection of wines and cocktails on offer. The waiters/waitresses were extremely welcoming and very efficient. The decor is streamlined and modern, some of the stools less comfy than others. All in all a superior lunch/drinks option at Birmingham Airport.
