We enjoyed walking around and seeing a wide variety of food options! The whole market area was clean and organized when we got there at 9am. No lines yet. Long lines did start forming around 9:45am when the hot foods were ready but moved pretty quickly. We tried: * The Ginger Pig - Traditional Sausage Roll * Wild Mushroom Risotto - Spelt Risotto with Truffle Shavings * Turnips Greengrocer - Chocolate Covered Strawberries * The Black Pig - The Best One With Crackling * Turkish Deli - Turkish Delight & Turkish Coffee * Bread Ahead - Crème Brûlée Donut

It is a farmer's type market with some prepared foods, which were top notch. We walked the entire thing and grabbed as much as we could to eat. There are plenty of food places just outside the space that are open later as well. I got some meat sticks from a vendor, sort of farmers market style. There was also another stand that had fruit in a cup with chocolate. Our best deal were some arepas that were half off because it was closing time and they wanted to get rid of them. This isn't the place to take pictures, but rather to immerse yourself in all the goodness that is here.

However, I came across while making my way to the tram stop on the south side of town to get back to Wimbledon It's an old fashioned fruit and veg market but the quality does vary quite widely with commensurate difference in price. Just beware that if something seems too good to be true, it probably is too good to be true However, with many stalls to gander at, there is ample opportunity to pick out some good yet quality bargains, especially as most stallholders seem happy to let you pick and choose your own produce In addition, there are some bric a brac stalls and some food stalls selling mainly ethnic food I hope there's always space for places like this

I didn't think it was much at the time when I lived in South Croydon, but now I really do miss places like this. I miss wandering "down to town" and passing this market and then wandering pass it again on the way home. It was a great place, full of vibrant people, a decent selection of stalls including ones that sold fresh fruit and veg, bags, purses, books, watches, pendants, antiques, flowers, specialty foods and the list goes on. In general, the number of stalls increased during the weekends. As with most outdoor markets, there's potential for haggling if you're into that kind of thing. There's also a lot of trash, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder... keep your eyes peeled for bargains in the summer, such as freshly plucked berries at an amazing price! Towards closing time (around 5:00 pm), there were lots of bargains that could be had: 1 pound for this or 1 pound for that. That is if you can understand the locals, screaming in cockney rhyming slang. There is nearby street parking, but the best bet would be to park near the city centre and walk down. I was lucky enough to live within walking distance of this market.

You can find everything from brilliant pies (Raven's Den in particular), awesome cheese (Lincolnshire Poacher and others), fresh veggies (Earthworks and others), fresh fish and meats... not to mention cupcakes and other sweet treats! We usually start by getting a coffee for the husband from the vendor with the mobile coffee bar (the machine is in the back of his van), and then wander the markets and end at the Merchant for a cup of tea for me. As long as there is a rainbow biscuit on the way even our toddler is happy.

I loved that everything was put in paper bags, not plastic. I read that the market has been around since the 9th century, which I loved knowing. A short walk down the hill brings you to beautiful neighborhoods with cobblestone roads and the huge cathedral. It's a lovely area overall.

All these items are locally produced by stall holders who hold hygiene certificates, and who have to make and package their goods to exacting standards. Everything is freshly made the day before or even on the day, so you can freeze it at home. You can place orders for almost anything you want - sausage rolls, handmade chocolates, elaborately decorated celebration cakes, whatever - knowing that it will be made locally, from scratch and from quality ingredients, with no fillers, chemicals or preservatives. This hidden gem of Sussex currently has a loyal following of the older generation, but young mothers and others inspired by Jamie Oliver's love of good food are starting to realise what a fantastic find this is. As well as all the delicious cakes and savouries, there is a huge variety of craft work - children's knitwear, handmade cards and calendars, jewellery and home grown seasonal fruits, plants and hanging baskets. You never know what will appear from one week to the next, which keeps you coming back for more ! Entry is free, the hall is wheelchair and pushchair accessible, there are refreshments on offer and car parking is very easy since the hall is on the car park. You can park for about 40p for 20 minutes. Horley Country Markets, St. John Ambulance Hall, Massetts Road, Horley, West Sussex, RH6 7DE.

There's probably only about 15 stalls, but you could do a decent food shop here consisting of fruit & veg, milk, eggs, bread, fish, olives, every type of sausage you can imagine (I settled on pork leek and chilli), amazing cuts of pork and even pre-prepared goodies like pies, chutneys and cakes. And if you get hungry while browsing you can grab a little pie to eat there and then - I enjoyed my butternut squash & spinach, and my hubby devoured his chilli beef & cheddar before I could even snaffle some. If pie isn't your thing, there was also curries, toasted sarnies and all other sorts of goodies. There was also a stall selling hot drinks which even on this sunny Sunday had a sizeable queue. ...when can I go back?
