Adj: Amazing! On our trip to Mazatlan, we decided to scale El Faro de Mazatlán, which is where the highest natural lighthouse is located in the world and it's on top of Crestón Island. To get there, we walked to the base of the mountain, and then it was time to climb up. Perhaps we should've taken a taxi/local bus to the start of the trail b/c it was a HOT day even though it was in November, so we were kind of tired before we even began the official hike. And off we go, we walked and walked and walked up and up and up the path. Really, it's a well-paved trail, all asphalted and some part were more dirt road, but generally, it's less a hike and more just a trail walk except for how steep it got. There are also many stairs once you get to the official CLIMB. So the official count is 336 steps after you get to the bottom of the stairs and even getting to that point was quite exhausting mostly b/c of the heat. We saw lots of local hike up to El Faro, so it's definitely a popular hiking spot and scenic place. Just check out my pictures to see the views you get when you have done the work and gotten up the moderately steep climb, with an elevation gain of over 500 feet (150m). It was free to hike up, but there's a small fee of around 30 pesos required to access the glass floor observation deck at the summit if you so choose to try that. There was quite a long line, so we skipped that not to mention I'm not too fond of glass bottom anything, haha... Still, we felt so accomplished to have made it to this lovely lighthouse. Came here for the view and didn't expect such an exhausting hike! Despite the heat, I was glad to arriving in the morning rather than the afternoon sun. I saw a couple iguanas and lots of neat plants. The view at the top is great. read more

Mazatlán was one of the stops on our Cruise and having been here before, we knew the hike up to El Faro was what we wanted to do. We got there at 10:30 a.m., only to have to wait in line for 30 minutes (I suppose it's to control the amount of people on the trail and at the top.) Waiting in the line was miserable as there was no shade and Mazatlán in November is still very HOT. The hike itself is FREE, but if you want to go on the glass observation deck there is an additional fee. Another thing to consider is that although there are bathrooms at the bottom, there are none at the top, so staying hydrated can be a challenge. The hike itself is moderate, but depending on your fitness level it can be strenuous, so taking as many breaks as needed is important. The hike starts on a gravel path and then turns into steps, 336 of them. You are rewarded with beautiful views along the way and the views at the top are breathtaking. Unfortunately, when you come from a cruise you only have a small window in which you can do this hike, but the ideal time to do it, is early in the morning or in the evening. read more

It was a surprisingly steep/difficult hike despite how short it was. We stopped here as a port location excursion, and our guide was very fun and informative of the area. I liked seeing the vultures and frigatebirds flying overhead. The guide was also able to spot an iguana chilling several yards above us. We went on a very hot day, unfortunately, and this path is extremely sunny. If we hadn't been part of an excursion, I would've easily been convinced to take the zipline down instead of hiking back down. read more

This is a great place to visit if you are in Mazatlan. It's a very steep hike to a tower, so you should be in moderate shape if you plan to do this hike. It's approximately 1/2 miles/800m uphill, before you reach a staircase of 336 steps. It's a great view of the city and the ocean. I highly recommend doing this hike if you are in Mazatlan, the view is amazing. read more

Really great way to spend a morning (though don't be like us and go on a hot day at midday because it's HOT and there isn't much shade). We came here on a Saturday via the cathedral and Mercado- took a golf cart taxi for 50 pesos to the bottom and walked up. I didn't wear sneakers for this hike and my flat loafers were just fine. Definitely wear a hat and bring water-I wouldn't recommend sandals though pretty much all of the path is flat or paved steps. The first 10 min or so is uphill but paved or gravel. The last 15 min is just stairs and you should be in moderate shape but there plenty of places to rest along the way. There are long stretches without shade and we were drenched in sweat and breathing hard when we reached the top but it was definitely worth it for the views! We did the glass observation deck which is great for photos. Would be cool if it extended over the ocean but it just goes over the cliffs. It's five pesos per person and they give you little surgical shoe covers to wear on the glass bridge. Pretty cool and worth the small free. read more

Such a great view of the entire city of Mazatlan. It is a very easy hike and it will take you about 20 minutes or so to get to the top. This place has been remodeled, it used to be dirt and there was no electricity (lights). There's sitting areas where you can have a great sandwich while enjoying the awesome view. The only negative side is that there is no bathroom, so I end up at the bushes when I was going back down. I guess I had to much water while hiking to the top. Also, there is a new addition to the Faro which is a a small floating glass bridge. As far as I could see that is what it looked like. I just didn't make a line to get on it. I think there is a charge of $5 pesos. Make sure you take a camera, wear good sport shoes and water. read more

Great hike with views. Come early and have/buy water at bottom or top. Take breaks. Wear breathable shirt.

This is a must see if you're not a regular in Mazatlan . I recommend you take water because the walk up is pretty crucial. you walk for about 15 min then you have to make your way up 336 stairs, But once you get there beautiful view and you get to experience the glass bridge. read more

We walked here from the La Siesta hotel via the Mirador. It was a long walk with a lot of steps, then we hit the base of the hill where the lighthouse sits. That's when the real fun begins. It is a good hike to the top with a lot of steps near the top. This would be difficult for anyone with mobility, heart or breathing issues. Otherwise, you should do it. Fantastic views in all directions. There is also a glass platform that you can walk out on and look straight down the cliffside. Definitely worth the $5 pesos. There was a vendor at the top with cold water and Gatorade, etc. that was cheap. Sorry, no cervesa. There were plenty of taxis at the bottom to take you where you want to go afterward. A good challenge and the best view in town. It is a long trek to the top. You can get buses and taxis to take you to the bottom for cheap and you're on your own from there. The paths have some easy and some quicker climb style paths that all lead up. read more
