He is well loved and respected by everyone around him and he never makes his encounters feel rushed despite his busy schedule. Through my rotation with him, I've seen how even in the busiest moments of medicine, there's always room for compassion. He remembers small details about nearly every single one of his patients in an effort to make every visit a little more personalized. His sense of humor and warm personality make every encounter a little more lighthearted. I can tell patients feel genuinely seen and cared for because of that. And the number of times I've had patients share with me about how Dr. Rafii saved their lives- quite literally- and how I'm lucky to have him as my preceptor, spoke volumes about the impact he has had on his patients. Dr. Rafii created many learning opportunities for me throughout my rotation as well- he might've convinced me that the heart is the most interesting organ of the body! I learned about all facets of cardiology with him and even got the opportunity to be involved in procedures like pacemaker placement and pericardiocentesis. That's where I was 2.5 years ago. A fellow co-worker of mine died at work because of a heart attack and it motivated me to examine my health. My family history is riddled with early heart disease and strokes. I had extremely high cholesterol, fatigue, chest pain, and other classic symptoms but being a young 46 year old at the time, and not overweight, I figured I was just overworked and stressed out. While that was true, Dr. Ben-Zur quickly gave me a reality check that something more was going on. He rapidly diagnosed my problem and convinced me that I needed an angiogram. That test showed that I had 2 blocked arteries at 100% and another at 95%. A triple bypass was drastically required. Throughout all of it, Dr. Ben-Zur was there supporting me and my family through the whirlwind process. As an interventionist, he didn't perform my bypass, but he helped me find a thoracic surgeon, and now Dr. Ben-Zur currently provides all of my post surgery aftercare. I owe him my life because I was on the fast track to a full on heart attack. We've formed a great health care relationship. Trying to find a cardiologist is difficult. There are so many choices. Who do you trust? Is this person knowledgeable? Are they personable? Can I depend on them with my life? Its these kinds of questions that actually prevent you from doing something because dealing with heart issues is scary. Its so easy to deny and think those chest pains are nothing and going to some random doctor in the phone book is sketchy at best. So, take these questions out of the equation and visit Dr. Ben-Zur to be certain. If you have a heart problem, he'll find it. He'll run the proper tests, you'll feel comfortable and I promise you he'll help alleviate your anxiety regarding your heart issue. Dr. Ben-Zur's team is also top notch. Incredibly personable, friendly, and always looking out for your best interest. They helped me with filing my disability claim during the recovery process. I've spent enough time in hospitals over the years to know that kindness can sometimes feel like a limited resource. Walking into West Hills Hospital, I honestly expected good medical care. What I didn't expect was to meet one of the most compassionate, respectful, and genuinely invested medical teams I've ever encountered. Dr. Namavar, the nurses, the social workers--every single person we met treated not only our family, but our loved one struggling with addiction, with a level of dignity and respect that frankly brought us to tears. Addiction carries so much stigma, yet not once did anyone make him feel like "just another addict." They saw a human being. That matters more than words can express. Our family had a very specific plan to safely transition him from the hospital directly into a rehabilitation facility. Every concern we had was heard. Every request was taken seriously. The team coordinated with the rehabilitation center, communicated with us every step of the way, and made sure nothing slipped through the cracks. Instead of making us feel like difficult family members, they made us feel like partners in his care. Then there was Dr. Namavar. I've met a lot of physicians. I've never met one quite like him. He sat down--not because he had to, but because he wanted to--and shared his own personal experiences with loss and drug overdoses. He wasn't reading from a script or giving a lecture. He was connecting with another human being. You could actually see the walls come down in the room. It was one of the most genuine moments I've ever witnessed between a physician and a patient. Dr. Ong did the procedure at West Hills Hospital; in a room staffed with 5 busy nurses, a giant monitoring screen and filled with technical equipment, designed to map, monitor and control the procedure. It was supposed to be a simpler procedure, right ventricle, I believe. But Dr. Ong saw in his mapping of my heart that additional ablations were required and did them all, insuring a perfect result. I've waited for 9 months to be sure of the result. I saw Dr Ong for my 9 month checkup , yesterday, and no flutter or fibrillation exits. He did a first class job. Dr. Ong also has well trained office staff. They know the monitoring equipment well. Zoey was my primary contact. She was competent, patient, and personable. I should add that Dr. Ong has a quality I have found in other Asian doctors...low on touchy-feeling and hand holding, but high on technical competence.
