He even made time for me between having to deal with shady phone service salesmen overpromising and underdelivering. (I wouldn't have been nearly so kind to them as he was.) Being new to Vancouver, I wanted to find a good nearby barber and I've read great things about Farzad's Barber Shop here on Yelp so I thought I should give it a try. One day I popped into his shop and he said he was fully booked for the day. Fair enough, my mistake. A few days later I tried calling him to reserve a spot, and he demanded that I give my credit card number over the phone. I responded "I'm sorry but I'm not comfortable giving my credit card number over the phone." To which the person on the other line responded in a rude manor: "Well I'm not comfortable taking reservations without a credit card number." The rudeness left a bad taste in my mouth. With haircuts I am a creature of habit, almost obsessively. I once kept going to the same barber I'd been going to as a kid until I was about 14, even though it was a 1 hr bus ride from my house. I kept going until he closed up shop. Let's just say I will probably keep getting my hair cut by Farzad and/or Noriko until either they close up shop or I am dead. I love this place. Here are some reasons why. 1). Staff are always too nice and make you feel at home. 2). The hot shave is done with multiple towels and shave cream. 3). They know too well how to do a legit fade. 4). The tv only plays sports channels. Mostly Canucks. 5). The music is relaxing; I fell asleep on the chair a few times. I don't understand how this barber shop has such great ratings tbh. I felt as though I wasn't being fully attended to. He kept getting distracted by his surroundings and when he engaged in conversation with me it was more like a q&a than a conversation. It was very awkward. Also I felt kind of manhandled and like things were happening without warning. It just felt like a bumpy ride from start to finish. I did, however, enjoy the hot shaving cream on my neck and the hot towel would have been nice if there was more of a warning. It kind of just felt like it was slapped onto my face. He seems like a nice guy, don't get me wrong. And the receptionist is incredibly nice. (I felt like she understood the haircut I was after more then he did.) Anyway, it seems like people really like this place, but I'm not really feeling it. Give it a shot or don't. It's up to you. This was a terrible experience. I was on a quest to find the best shave in the city, and the reviews led me to think this would be it. I went as a trial run for my wedding, and am very glad I went nearly two months ahead of time. Farzad cut my hair much shorter than I asked. I asked him if he could try to make my thin spot appear less obvious, and he joked about how I have more hair than he does, and not to worry - which would have been fine if he'd then attempted to do what I asked. He was not particularly, if at all, interested in what I wanted my hair to look like. This was one of the worst, and highest priced, haircuts I have had in years. It was in no way what I asked for. During my shave, the razor was incredibly uncomfortable. It pulled, and dragged, and was generally unpleasant. I had quite a bit of growth, and he tried to take it in far too few passes. My instincts told me to called off the shave when I saw a disposable blade - I should have listened to my instincts. I will say that the shave felt good later on, but I left the shop stressed, and haggard. Half of the shave is the experience. Don't go here, unless you want to leave looking mediocre, and $30, or $60 lighter. I've tried most of the high end downtown establishments, and not been terribly happy with any of them, consistently. Some do a good job once or twice, but you can never count on it. So I've tried the fancy places, and concluded that the old fashioned barber I went to before, and am going to now, is the best there is. I dread the day he retires. I have been twice to Farzad's Barber Shop. The first time was for the royal treatment, getting my long hairs and beard cut and shaved. The second time was just to get a hair cut. Both time the service was excellent. The royal treatment is a must have if you really want to be pampered for a special occasion. I definitely recommend the place. read more

In recent years, my partner has moved away from canned shaving cream and disposable razors because it caused him skin irritation. He now uses a double edged razor for a wet shave with a brush. So I thought a shave at a barber shop would be a great birthday gift. I went to Farzad's, got a Deluxe Hot Shave gift certificate, booked an appointment, and told them that this was his first time getting a professional shave. Sadly, he got an awful shave. Noriko, who is the other barber besides Farzad, shaved my partner. She kept nicking him with the straight edge razor, it was really weird and hard to watch. By the time she was done, there were little cuts all over his face. And, the shave wasn't as close as my partner is able to achieve on his own with his double edge razor. Farzad was shaving another customer in the other barber chair and was not cutting the guy up. So maybe Farzad is the better barber. We might give this shop another try, but definitely will make sure to book the appointment with Farzad next time. read more

Moved to the West End a month and a half ago and was looking for a new place to get my hair cut. Last week I read the feature on Farzad's in VancityBuzz and figured I'd give it a shot. Couldn't have been more impressed. Farzad was amazing: friendly, easy-going, and an outstanding barber. Maybe it's luck, maybe it's skill, but with only a few questions my hair ended up being exactly the way I wanted it. Typically I'm used to easing into a relationship with a hairdresser, and even after multiple visits at past places (a barber in Marpole, among them) it was never guaranteed that it would be perfect. This cut was flawless, and it somehow passed in a blink of an eye while we discussed neighbourhood development and gentrification. For $35, you'll get a standard hair-cut of your choice, a straight-razor neck shave, a shampoo and wash, followed by a hot towel and a mini head massage. Pricey? A little, but that's purely cultural. Growing up, I was used to visiting cheap, independent salons for years and getting $15 haircuts that were good because I had gone for so long and I knew what I liked. I spent much of this year backpacking around the world and if there's one thing you notice about many European countries, it's that hair cuts are serious business: all barbershops have the same services that Farzad has, for about the same price. And at $35, that's just about right for an upper-middle tier barbershop in Vancouver. As others have said, you could be paying almost double for a trendy barber, or triple at a salon for the same product with none of the service. I have taken my husband here twice for a full head straight razor shave. Farzad is awesome! He's enthusiastic about his work, the atmosphere is great! (Very manly- motorcycle and Canucks jersey, bowler hats. Very classic!) Farzad knows his stuff and he's very friendly. His wife is very sweet too. I used to live upstairs in the same building as Farzad's Barbershop, and can remember when he first moved into the neighborhood. With salons and barbers all within a stones throw, he seemed to be taking a reasonably large risk however when he opened his new shop up to the public, the dark wood trim, black and white tiles, and beautifully appointed shop was easily the new standard in the neighborhood for barbershops. The presence of sweet motorbikes in the shop never hurt either. ;) Farzad's desire to deliver excellent and friendly service has never tarnished over the years and I have become a devoted customer. I went to farzad and was told to come in a week because it was all full Even though there was only one customer in the shop. I even asked shall I come in an hour and he said no come in 1 week .I think it is great that new places are opening up on mainland . This review has been long overdue. Farzad's is one my favourite local business in all of Vancouver. It is an institution. This is a place for men who take their hair seriously but prefer not to have to get their haircuts by someone that is more of a hipster than a barber or by anyone that insists on calling themselves a hair stylist. The price is reasonable. My haircut is $35 without tip and I'm happy to pay it with a tip. It's not the cheapest haircut in town. But in Vancouver, you can pay twice the price and get the same haircut as you would at Farzad's. Plus, I doubt that you would be able to get a better haircut in Vancouver anyways, so for $35, its a steal. They have two barbers, Farzad and Noriko and you can't go wrong with either. I've been getting my haircut with Noriko for about 3 years now and every haircut is excellent. She is the model of efficiency and craftsmanship. My haircut never takes longer than 25 minutes and in that time I get a rinse, haircut, head message, and she styles my hair as well. The decor is excellent and the service is friendly and welcoming. if you have an appointment, Shelley, the manager, will even text you a reminder! If you want to get a haircut, book ahead of time, at least a week. They are great at what they do, so inevitably, they will be busy. I've taken my best friend here for a shave for his birthday and he still talks about it two years after the fact. I can't say enough good things about this place, you will just have to go in and experience it yourself. You will not be disappointed! read more

I've been a customer of Farzad for roughly 18 years, since the time I first started working in Vancouver. Never changed since. Followed him clear across town when he opened up his new shop in Yaletown. When I'm in every month, I book my next one for the following month. Good thing, too, because his well-deserved success typically has him solidly booked up several days in advance. The thing about Farzad and Shelley is that they're not just your barber. They're your friends. Just go by their shop for a cut (especially around Christmastime), and you'll see what I mean. Best shop in the city. Period. I've enjoyed Farzad's for haircuts over the years, hes a friendly guy and it's a great shop... however as prices have increased over the years, I've had no choice but to move on. In combination with this I also found my haircuts were becoming almost too quick (often 20 mins) and it just seemed like there was no time for him to relax, as he has so many clients per day to cut/shave, and sometimes has to answer the phone etc in middle of haircut, if the receptionist isn't avail. Not really his fault but I sometimes got the sense that he needs to move things along more quickly than he'd like in order to maintain his schedule as he is usually booked solid (which is great for his business), but its all a bit too rushed for me. Anyway, Farzad is a great barber who knows his stuff, however I have moved on to other shops that are able to dedicate a full hour of undivided attention to a haircut for the same price or less than I was paying here in the past. I had to laugh at some of the reasons people wrote for giving one and two star ratings. I guess it just shows that no one can please all of the people all of the time...although Farzad comes close! I tried Farzad a few years ago, after getting tired of spending a whole hour in a stylists chair every time I wanted a cut, and have been seeing him every 3 weeks ever since. Farzad gives a consistently great haircut, which is why you can't expect to just walk in and wait for an empty chair. All his appointments are on the half hour, so if you don't see a client in the shop, it's because one just left and another is about to arrive. This goes on 6 days a week, from early morning till early evening. Farzad is a no-nonsense, real barber. Yep, he moves that chair around with purpose, and slaps that hot towel on your face without ceremony. If you expect to be pampered like you're in some kind of spa, you're in the wrong place. Talk sports, travel, motorbikes, cars and heaven forbid, politics. Either way, you're in and out in a half hour with a professional haircut at a reasonable price. My boyfriend wanted to get a quick haircut while we were downtown; initially the receptionist said they were booked up for the week but the barber (I think it was Farzad) said he could squeeze him in. My boyfriend loved his haircut (so did I) and the fact that they used a straight razor on the back of his neck. Farzad's is an old time barbershop with a dose of the metrosexual. It's a nice experience--cushy leather chairs in the waiting area, steamy towels, they shave the hair on the back of your neck with a straight razor and hot cream, and brandy around the holidays. By far the best barbershop in town, there's a reason why they always come number 1 on yelp. You get a haircut, get your sides trimmed, the go over it with a straight edge blade, wash and condition your hair, place a hot towel in your face and style it. Do not go anywhere else for a shave!!! At Farzad's they use the highest quality blades made from Japanese surgical steel. Most won't use them as they are much more expensive. I've left other places looking like something out of a horror movie, or they have to go through multiple blades. Been getting 2-3 shaves a month at Farzad's for about 2 years now and always perfect.
