We went here as a party of 3 on a Sunday dinner and it was not too busy. We ordered the combo for 2 with keye wot (stewed beef) with an add on full sized order of yebeg tibs (sautéed lamb). All of this is arranged neatly in one plate to share, with some injera on the side. The vegetables were nicely spiced and fresh, and the meat is fairly spicy and high quality. The injera is okay - it was served cold so it didn't hit properly with the rest of the food. Service is good as they checked up on us occasionally, though we need to flag them for any additional requests but with minimal effort. read more

I have never tried Ethiopian food prior to coming here so I was excited! This experience was very enriching and I ate the entire meal with my left hand (as instructed by the man who served us). He was really welcoming and talked to us about the different dishes so we knew what we were having. I absolutely loved the injera. The texture was so soft, spongey, and the flavour was light and slightly like sourdough. It paired really well with the dishes. My friend and I got fassil's combination because we wanted to try a bit of everything and I really enjoyed the slow cooked beef that it came with. The other dishes were good too, but I was not familiar with the taste. We made sure to finish everything and we were so full by the end of our meal so the portion is definitely enough for two people. It seemed to be a one man show as there was only one man who greeted us, took our orders and served us our food. He was ever so friendly and as half the people in our party were completely unfamiliar with Ethiopian cuisine, he saw to it that they were served the best options available for sampling a good variety of flavours. Veggie Combo Siga Keye Wot Yebeg Tibs Doro Tibs For anyone who's never had Ethiopian food, they serve the food on top of a soft flatbread, similar to a pancake in texture. This bread is called Injera and has a bit of a sour flavor to it. Extra rolls of Injera are given, and you're meant to use the Injera as a serving utensil by ripping off pieces of it and then using it to scoop up your food and eat it. Everything tastes so good with the Injera, and once you've finished the extra rolls of Injera you get to eat the large piece of Injera that's been soaking up all the wonderful flavors of all the various toppings that have been sitting on top of it! It's very messy finger food so you should definitely make sure to have clean hands before indulging in this type of cuisine! We were craving Ethiopian food, so we decided to check this place out. I liked the ambience and service was decent. Where it fell a bit short was the amount of food you are given. We took the combo platter recommended by the server. This gave us a veggie combo with some chicken. While food was good there really wasn't very much food given to be shared between two people. Decided to give Fassil Ethiopian Restaurant a try. They're located next door to Nha Trang Restaurant. We dropped in for a Friday lunch (12:30pm). Only one worker, who was jugging all the serving and cooking duties. Menu is short and sweet with 5 vegetarian, 8 meat (beef, chicken, fish and lamb) and two combination dishes. Most dishes are $12.00 to $18.00. - Injera - stingy with the injera, R had to go up to ask for more. Injera had no character/liveliness to it; lacked the typical sour, fermented note. - Fasil's combination ($30.00) - veggie combo and we opted for the siga keye wot. The scoops of vegetables were small. Our favourites was the chickpea puree (first time eating this) and boiled split lentils (nice kick from the berbere powder). The slow cooked beef was decent. Ambiance, cute little hole in the wall restaurant. Service, very kind. Food, amazing. Granted I've been once, but we ordered the combo platter and every single thing on that plate was a 10/10. The food was so flavorful. The combo platter states it feeds two, and it was definitely enough for me and my buddy, maybe even just a bit more than we could eat as we didn't finish everything off completely. The restaurant was clean and welcoming and again the service was kind and prompt. I would recommend this restaurant completely and would definitely come back when I'm visiting again. It was my first time trying Ethiopian food. I didn't really know what to expect. So I asked a little bit about the menu and they explained what to expect and what people typically order. There were three of us, and initially I misunderstood that each of us should get a veggie combo and add the meat to share. But it's actually a lot of food so we got 1 veggie combo, 1 meat, 1 fish and shared everything. This was more than enough for 3 hungry people. I knew injera would be sour but I didn't realize how sour it would be! It was also more filling than I expected. It went really well with the spice of the lamb. Of all the veggies my favourite was the chickpeas. Next time I would get just the chickpea and some lamb or try another meat. Spinach was very bland and I think it was the lentils that was a little too spicy for me. The fish was just plain fish fried without much flavoring, I wouldn't get that again. Definitely a place to come to with a few people to share everything with rather than eating individually. Definitely coming back here! read more

Since Fassil was the first Ethiopian place I'd tried, I decided to revisit it to see what I thought after having tried so many more places. I ordered the vegetarian platter (~$12 plus tax), which was ready for pick-up 15 minutes later. The platter comes with 5 dishes, many of which were on the watery side and sour side. I wasn't too impressed with any of the items. You got a lot of injera with it, which is intensely sour--borderline unpalatable after a while. I was full after my meal, but I really didn't think this place's food holds its weight. 2.5/5 All in all, pretty disappointing, especially considering the many good Ethiopian places nearby in East Van. I love Ethiopian food - injera is such a fantastic base, fun to use and deliciously fermented and with an amazing spongy texture that soaks up all the flavour. Fassil really focuses on the injera platter experience. As far as I can tell, everything on the menu is meant to be served on a plate of injera, so be aware of that going in. The vegetarian options are delicious - my favourite is the shiro wot, a delicious creamy chickpea stew, but the lentil misir wot and the split pea kik wok are excellent as well. I highly recommend one veggie combo per two people, to provide you with a ton of flavour variety. If you combine a veggie combo with a meat option, you'll get a larger portion of the meat and it'll be the star of your platter, so I recommend that approach! The default combo that includes meat will get you a basic chicken or beef stew, but I recommend branching out too, since it's not much more expensive. I most recently tried the yebeg tibs - a lamb stew - and it was incredibly delicious. The spice levels are mild, too - we were offered a choice of not spicy, mild, and spicy for the lamb, and took the spiciest option. Even so it wasn't nearly as spicy as Southeast Asian or Korean dishes can get, so don't be afraid to go for the spiciest option! It really makes for a lovely, aromatic, warming dish. At the end of the meal, I left with a full belly and yet also a deep longing for even more injera and deliciously spiced stews and curries. I can't recommend it enough! read more

This is a very cute little Ethiopian restaurant in Mount Pleasant, owned and operated by an Ethiopian family. Each dish is served with their barley and teff sourdough flatbread which is spongy, tangy, and delicious. My partner and I got the chicken tibs and the lamb tibs. We didn't get the stew dishes because they are all made with canola oil, but the meat dishes are made with clarified butter (BIG WIN)! Overall, the texture of the meat was okay, but the flavour profile made up for it. I tasted flavours that I have never tasted before, which is awesome!!! The only issue was that the food needed something else to balance it out. The flavours were all very 'heavy,' and there were no veggies or crème fraiche pairings to provide respite from the heaviness of the meat and grain. Overall, I'd eat this again simply because the food is so unique and authentic. However, I would order it to go and eat it with tatziki or a fresh cabbage salad at home. Don't be afraid to try Fassil if you've never had Ethiopian food! The authentic flavours and the smiling chef behind the counter do not disappoint. read more

Not totally sure about this place. Nice hospitality and friendly service, but only one person worked the entire restaurant. I wasn't so impressed to watch several plates of food cooked in a microwave oven. That is not how great Ethiopian food is made. The menu is limited, seemingly without appetizers, and the $1.80 surcharge to use a credit card to pay wasn't very appreciated. On the other hand, the overall hospitality was warm, but injera was cold, and some dishes were hot and others were disappointing being only luke warm. The chef asked how spicy we wanted the food to be, which I really appreciated as someone with a lower tolerance for spice. It was a really fun meal, both the sensory experience of eating using the injera and the new (to me) flavour combinations. There was a lot of variety to the different vegetarian dishes. I think everything on the menu here is served on injera, which works great for me because it's the reason I came! Injera is delicious, soft, spongy, sour, fermented bread that goes well with the rich stews offered here, a perfect blend of sour and savoury. We shared a lamb dish and the vegetarian combo and it came on the same large injera sheet. The injera and the lamb were very good though I think I've had better of the vegetarian stews, though much of that is just personal preference. I always think the portions are small until I start eating--you get full easily on injera. The restaurant is small but seemed to attract a group of regulars. The menu is small; there are few drink choices and no dessert. The service was good, friendly but not overly so. As with other Ethiopian restaurants I've been to, they usually ask you if you've had Ethiopian food before, probably to alert you ahead of time that you will be eating with your hands. Fraser and Broadway normally isn't known for dining, but it turns out there's a nice charming hole in the wall here called Fassil. Parking is available in the evenings. Excellent. The place is a mom + pop + daughter operation, and they are the real deal. I heard them talking in their local dialect. Also there was another table with Ethopians sitting there, also speaking the same language. That passes my authenticity check. The dad was the waiter, and he was very friendly and helpful. As we had no idea what to order, he gave us some suggestions, and told us what he wouldn't recommend as well. Honest opinions are always appreciated. The food consisted of various "piles" of meats and vegetables such as beef, and chickpeas. You also get injera (the traditional Ethopian pancake-looking flatbread) that looks like a thin piece of foam. The traditional way of eating this is with your hands, where you rip off a piece of injera, wipe up some of the piles, and stuff it in your mouth. Pretty cool for sure. Be sure to not wash your hands beforehand, for the full authentic experience. We used up the injera a bit too quickly, but fortunately there were plenty more rolls where those came from. The pricing was very reasonable, at some $13 a person including beers. This restaurant is definitely not your average joint. I must say I did learn a thing or two. Recommended. read more

My fiancee's sister has been coming to this restaurant for several years now and we finally had a chance to try it. Her family absolutely loves Ethiopian food and rightfully so, with the amount of different flavors are in every dish. We had a pretty large order including 3 Lamb tibs and 2 vegetable platters. Unfortunately we had it to go, so the lamb tibs were separated from the injera. This meant I could not have my favorite part which is the injera at the bottom. Friend and I were in town and found this place by doing a simple search and boy were we glad. The parking is mainly street parking, but it wasn't too hard to find and then navigate to the restaurant. The atmosphere of the place was very welcoming. The service was fast and the waitress was very sweet and friendly, also very accommodating by asking if there were any dietary restrictions that we may have!!!! I had the Yebeg Tibs, and it was amazing the level of spicy was just perfect. The portion sizes for each plate was, what I would consider, the perfect portion for a single person. The staff was very welcoming and kind and food was very tasty! Beware that service is pretty slow, but it gave us plenty of time to catch up so we didn't mind.
