In rainy Galway today. We were all chilled due to the wind and rain when we found (Fat) Freddie's. Just FYI they aren't using the adjective Fat any longer. The food options were amazing and the wood fired pizza was fantastic!! I had the carbonara with chicken and gluten free pasta which was outstanding!! My only disappointment was no gluten free pizza...there are other places in Galway that offer gluten free pizza so we will try those next time!! read more

Freddie's brings a fun Italian neighborhood feel to Galway's food scene. The exterior has bright orange eaves blending into the lively Quay Street around it; once inside, you'll find a relaxed, slightly bohemian space with artful décor and comfortable seating that feels like a polished local favorite. The vibe is upbeat and casual, loud but not overly so: great for group dinners, laid-back evenings, or a hearty meal after a day of sightseeing. At around 6:30pm on a Sunday night, our group of eleven needed a dinner option close to the station before our bus back to Dublin. There was no seating inside the restaurant, but plenty of space on the heated patio outside. The menu has something for everyone, with small plates, sandwiches, pizzas, and pastas, and there's also daily specials and a fairly affordable drinks menu. I ordered their Beetroot & Goats Cheese Salad (€15), which was a fresh salad of mixed leaves, beetroot, vinegary-pickled onions, acidic-sweet marinated tomatoes, rich warm goat cheese, mixed nuts, and extra virgin olive oil and balsamic glaze. This was a wonderland of textures and flavors, with crunch and softness, acidity and earthiness; for me, the true standout was the generous portion of two sizable pieces of melty, creamy goat cheese with just a slight hint of tang. I also appreciated the fact that the salad wasn't drenched in dressing, but thoughtfully drizzled with a light EVOO and mild balsamic glaze. I initially thought it was a bit pricey, but it was a large portion, and I found the goats cheese made a great substitute for a more traditional salad protein; additionally, the freshness of the vegetables made me willing to pay more of a premium. Other great dishes included their Spicy 'Ndjuja Pizza (€16 - a thin crust pizza topped with tomato sauce, mozzarella, spicy 'nduja sausage, Cashel Blue cheese, and a drizzle of honey), Primavera (€16 - pasta with roasted chicken, sundried tomatoes, and red onion in a creamy Parmesan sauce), and their Bailey's Tiramisu (€8 - the classic Italian dessert spiked with a splash of Bailey's...it was absolutely as delicious as it sounds). I will note that the pizzas seemed to be a better value than the pastas, as they were larger portions at similar prices. All in all, Freddie's is a fun Italian-inspired (if not entirely authentic) restaurant in a heavily-flocked area of Galway, service is friendly (if a bit slow when it gets busy), and prices are reasonable for the location, portion sizes, and tasty food. Freddy's is a cozy Italian restaurant, right in the busy area of the Latin Quarter. We came in and were promptly greeted and seated. The service was great, our server was kind and attentive. However, the food was quite disappointing. We ordered the calamari to split, and this was the best part of the meal. The pieces were large, it was well-cooked (not at all rubbery), crispy, and the lemon aioli was a bright addition. For my main, I ordered the primavera pasta dish. This was bland, no mincing words. It tasted as though the sauce was straight heavy cream. Similar situation with the arrabiata pasta dish, which wasn't spicy and quite plain. My friends who ordered pizza, though, were happy with what they got. So, pizza may be the way to go here. read more

We spent 60 euros roughly for 2 drinks, beef lasagna, garlic bread, and some sort of pasta and a lovely seafood soup (only thing I liked). I don't want to give them such a negative feed back but it is what it is...we didn't finish our food. We stayed at The Residence so it was like ten steps away from us. This is the only place I ever visited where they had jalapeños as part of a lasagna recipe. It was eye opening. And slightly eye watering, yes, but once I knew I was ready, and abstained from tears entirely in shear happiness. That was a few years ago, and I regret to inform you that when I went in most recently, I didn't get the lasagna, not because I didn't want to, but because they had a calzone on the menu that hadn't been there before, and holy cow. It was delicious. We did unfortunately show up right after a really busy lunch rush for these guys and it did take them a bit to get to us, but overall, a great lunch. Dinner? Linner? Eh. Fat Freddy's is by far my favorite restaurant in Galway. We went in on a Sunday night. Completely forgetting what time it was, we started a bit late in the evening. After all, we had just flown into Ireland that day and were exhausted-- we needed to nap. They were so accommodating, although they were about to close. We got a pizza, and it just hit the spot. We noticed an advertisement indicating that if we bought one pizza the next day, we'd get one for free. Of course, traveling on a budget-- we came back. This pizza is by far the best that I've had. I think about it often, and am trying to plan a trip back to Ireland, around this pizza. Something that I thought was cool, was in the bathroom they had a guest book. Although the idea of touching a pen in a bathroom kinda creeps me out, I was sure to sign it. No one has ever contacted me from it, but I'm still waiting. read more

Always a go-to spot in Galway. Shop St was heaving as usual on Easter Sunday night so we barged our way to Fat Freddies. They don't take bookings so whether you get a table or not is more down to timing and dumb luck. We got lucky. Place was jammed with the usual mixture of tourists and local family groups. Great buzz. Fast, efficient and friendly service to boot. We both ordered pizzas - mine with pepperoni and the other half with seafood. Both judged excellent as was the accompanying Pinot Grigio even though it was the cheaper of two on the menu. In and out in barely an hour. Not a place for a romantic dinner but for good grub, well prepared and fairly priced, it's hard to beat. We'll be back. read more

The staff was friendly, courteous, and responsive. The pizza's were thin crust. My wife and I shared a greek salad and a 12 inch pizza. This turns out to be about the right size and mixture for us. Chase that with a few beers or glasses of wine, and you can't go wrong. Pricing was about right for everything. Very family oriented and casual. When I lived in Galway this was my favorite date night restaurant. The atmosphere is kind of fun and casual and it is not as touristy as some of the other restaurants on Quay street. Underwhelming is the word to describe this place , are u Italian ? Are you Mexican ? Can u do either well ? I got a pesto base pizza with Caramelized unions, feta ,sun dried tomatoes and Parma ham. Where is the garlic or basil in the pesto there is just no flavor. They don't split checks at all but that's there policy so not much u can do , I feel all the money went into the atmosphere and not the tragically boring flavorless food . I think this is a very impressive restaurant located near the Spanish Arch in Galway City.The service was excellent and the food arrived out very quickly. When I went to the restaurant, it was packed so me and my friends were at the tables out front. Always seems to be busy which is a very good sign. Serves traditional irish and Italian food. This place is a quirky masterpiece! The food is great and the staff is friendly. The inside is funky and quaint. We ordered the Cajun chicken quesadilla which came with a mini salad and yogurt instead of sour cream. Well cooked and flavorful. The 4 cheese pizza hit the spot. Just right for 2 people to share. I was apprehensive about Brie on my pizza but I'd have it again in a heartbeat! The cider we tried is an Ireland made cider. Light, crisp and refreshing. The best part of the meal were the desserts! Fat Freddie was good but not as good as I had hoped. We sat outside for dinner and i am so glad we did. The street was a great source of entertainment and blocked the wind...we didn't need the warm blankets provided at all!! They have a great location in the city. We both got bruschetta to start in different varieties and both were amazing. My partner then ordered tagliatelle and I ordered enchiladas. Both portions were massive but the server packed up what we couldn't eat, for us to take home. Unfortunately my partner was given the wrong dish. But he liked what he got. And the enchiladas were not as good as I've had elsewhere. But the pizzas looked amazing and I would definetly try one if I go back. I have been visiting this restaurant with friends and family since I was five years of age, and let me say I've never been disappointed eating at the wonderful Fat Freddy's in all these years. Pizzas are normally my go-to meal accompanied by side salads, sometimes fries. The service along with the homely decor makes you feel right at home with some amazing and unique dishes created by the talented chefs of a decently priced restaurant. I had the pleasure of eating here a few weeks ago. I would highly recommend the antipasta- ollives, sundried tomatoes, salami, pepperoni, basil pesto, garlic bread, really amazing. I had this followed with their sweet chilli chicken pizza. The service was very friendly and professional. I would highly recommmend this restaurant to anyone visiting galway. I arrivethed here in the dawnlight hours yesterday in the company of my young buck colleagues. Upon entrance we were greeted by a young latino cream king. It wasn't just the pastrami I wanted to eat up if you know what I mean ;;;;)) As far as the service goeth'dst've, all I can say is yay! I'm a fan. Didn't like the cursing though, it looked as though the manager had a stint as a sailor if you know what I mean! Cursing up a storm at all Jew-like patrons.
