We were around the corner at the Pit and decided to walk over to Father & Son. We had read some good things. We were just browsing. Now, we do go to more than the average persons number of antique fairs and locations in local NC states. That being said, prices were a bit on the high side but selection was good. Parking is terrible, had to pay to street park to even get in. Then everything is extremely overpriced! My husband and I visit thrift stores and antique stores all of the country and I have never seen a place as overpriced as this one. Do not recommend. read more

Premiere store for MCM in Raleigh. Back again & the store has changed location and focus. Still lots of mid century modern furniture & decor. Still funky and eclectic stuff but now more organized & curated pieces. The prices for items reflect this too. Prices are extremely high. I can understand it as they have to go find the pieces, fix it up & it takes up premium space in this smaller store. So if you've got the money but no time to go hunt down the furniture, then pieces are quite reasonable. This is not a thrift store. It's a vintage store w/ gallery / museum pricing. Owners / consigners are willing to negotiate, so ask for a better price, you just never know. Amazing selection of furniture with ahmazingly high prices. Lots of vintage clothes and records upstairs. They do have a variety of antiques, so the two stars is for that. Their prices are very high and they will either not negotiable or take a few dollars off. The staff member told me that she would take about 10% off but that was it because my item and several other items in the store were specifically priced for photographers or designers to purchase. read more

The staff ruins what could be an awesome store. The selection is really good but most of the stuff is overpriced. If you don't look rich they won't talk to you. I asked for a changing room to try on a shirt and the girl seemed annoyed. When I checked out the cashier didn't talk to me other than to ask if I needed a receipt. It's honestly worth going in because it is a cool shop but don't expect much as far as customer service. Please come here. Please! I need everyone to experience this. I loved every second of my visit here and wish I could've spent longer. The location of the store is prime, right near other great shops. They offer all sorts of vintage clothing in a variety of sizes. Being a plus sized woman- it can be hard to find vintage clothes for bigger bodies in most shops. I appreciated them having some options for me (though you may have to search a bit- I'd love if they expanded their options:). There was also beautiful furniture and decor. This is a very cool antique shop that leans towards mid-century modern design. I think for the quality and condition of their pieces, the prices are fair. They have a a lot of teak furniture, as well as clothing, records, accessories, and home decor items. I love browsing through this shop. Visited on 6/26/13. This place has plenty of awesome mid-century furniture pieces, most priced pretty reasonably. I'm not sure if they negotiate. Lots of "vintage" clothing (Lee jeans from the 90s which I don't consider vintage) but that's not really my thing. Overpriced chachkies are everywhere. We were wearing plain t-shirts and jeans, and I gotta say, we must not have appeared hipster enough to deserve a half-decent welcoming. We were never addressed by the staff, unless you count the super cute dog that met us at the door when we entered. They were busy lounging on the furniture, talking in low voices, doing their best to ignore our presence. And folks, we walked RIGHT between them SEVERAL times. We were interested in an $800 dresser and night stand set right at the entrance, maybe 6 feet from where they were sitting. We opened the drawers, checked it out, spent several minutes discussing it. No attention paid. I was so turned off by how we were treated, or not treated, that we just left. Note to the staff: I sincerely hope you enjoyed yupping it up with the really cool-looking artsy-fartsy dude buying chemistry beakers. Your lack of reverence for a quiet, average-looking couple cost you $800 and any future business. And trust me, we "get" your store. We just don't "get" your lack of customer service. I won't go back. And I wouldn't recommend to my friends. They have some great things, but I can find the same things at flea markets all across the state, and walk away knowing something interesting about each piece, having been spoken to by the sellers. read more

Just when you think you've explored every nook & cranny this place has to offer, you turn a corner and realize there's another level (and another!). I can't believe I walked by here so many times before realizing the multi-floor vintage extravaganza within. Though I've only made a couple of purchases, I imagine if I lived in Raleigh I'd visit frequently and haul more. Don't skip the basement for dirt-cheap finds (though it takes some digging -- and some sharp night vision because the basement is (as you might expect) low-ceilinged, dim, and a bit musty. The main floor will have you rummaging through 50s-era kitchenware, ooh-ing over mid-century sofas, and giggling at the gag-y faux mustaches and ballerina tutus. The real treasure in my opinion is up top (it's always better up top, isn't it?) where you'll find rooms full of mint condition vintage pieces. And each room has its own era -- and persona -- to it. It's a cool place to lose yourself in, whether that's a few minutes or a few hours... read more

I had lived in Raleigh for almost a decade (and visited every antique store on the eastern seaboard, or so I thought) before I discovered this place. It's a curious mix of thrift-store junk, antiques and retro-mod that doesn't quite fit in either. But it's still worth checking out if you're into old things. My out-of-town guests found some really nice chrome retro-mod for their home, and I found a great black-and-white turn of the century panoramic photo of a North Carolina casket company, with all of the somber looking employees lined up for their moment of posterity. I'm not really into 1960's and 1970's era stuff, but I appreciate that it's becoming very collectible now, and this place seems to be doing a thriving business thus. And if I can manage to find the occasional 19th century piece, then it gets my thumbs up. :-) read more

First off, don't hate because you can't afford it or simply think they are pricey. You can make it "pricey" in the price range section. This is a five-star vintage boutique. People pay good money for this stuff and if you can make more, you should. Father and Sons cleans up and often reupholsters items in the store so they can sell them at the price they make it. The store is beautifully arranged and you can find some ah-mazing pieces in here. It does go on for what seems like forever in how small the space appears to be from the front door. My problem is that I seriously get overwhelmed in here and can't decide what to get and just run out. Hazard of the trade I guess. read more

I think the name is a bit misleading because it's more of a vintage thrift store than an "antique" store- when I think of antiques, I think of classy pieces- this is more vintage/thrifty stuff... but that's not to say they don't have really cool stuff! This is the place to go to pick up wacky pieces for a throwback theme party, or if you collect old treasures, you could spend hours perusing through their stuff. They have lots of vintage clothes on the 2nd floor too. I'm a thrift store junky... and I don't really have high expectations when I go to them. But I do expect to get a good deal because it's old/used stuff! And Father & Sons has anything but a good deal..... it's all over-priced :( And like any vintage store, they are incredibly unorganized. It's kinda like pilfering through your grandma's basement or shed- you just never know what you're going to stumble upon. I think the last thing that could help this place out a bit is if their staff was a bit more friendly.... they have a really hard time even acknowledging people coming into their store. Smile, folks! Overall, I love what they're trying to do here, but they need to get it together. It's not NYC, and many people won't pay $15 for an over-used 1993 Disney cup or $200 for a small picture frame mirror. Perhaps they should improve their customer service and I'd consider giving it another chance. read more

I've never actually bought anything from this shop but I love looking. It's prices are certainly a bit higher but you can't think of it as a thrift shop, it's an antique shop (with art gallery) and is huge. I frequented the downstairs several times before I ventured upstairs, but when I finally did I realized that it just kept going and going. Several local artists keep shops at the very top and it's quite a pleasant experience to check them out (although in the summer time it gets rather hot upstairs!) I love the window displays are always unique and well done. They change based on the season and really draw in new and old customers. If you're visiting Raleigh and headed from downtown to the Depot, give Father & Son a peak, you won't be disappointed. And, if you're willing to pay for it, they've got tons of vintage clothes and relics. Plus, it's not often that you get play fetch with a tiny wiener dog while shopping! read more

I really like the vintage antique vibe if this place with peculiar signs, clothes, and household decor. If you want a fresh flashback of something borrowed take a step inside. They have a nice jack russell (?) that gets you at the door. Nice record collection, antique books, and ugly xmas sweaters. read more

Out of all the antique places I visited, this is the only one thats worth visitng in Raleigh. Although some things are overpriced, I feell its more like an art gallery. Part time capsule, part clothing store, and part creepiness with all the oddly placed mannequins, youll walk around feeling uneasy, yet enticed. read more

Whoa, friend, there is *lots* going on in here -- I mean lots. It's almost deceptive, actually: you walk in the place, and the front room looks a little like the M.O. inside is mostly furniture-centric. But if you rest in the front room, you, it turns out, would be mistaken. Father & Sons is a veritable treasure trove if quirky, thrifty fare that makes for ample time rummaging, and that, as it turns out, is just what I did here, from the racks of vintage pearl snap shirts to the groovalicious trousers (great band name) I found hanging in the back. The space is not dull. Given more time and an immediately fatter wallet I'd have been pressed to pick up a few items, but as it was duty called and we had to keep things moving to the elite event. This store has the best vintage clothing selection I've seen in a long time. All of the clothing was in great shape and for fair prices, and every single piece was a standout piece- no filler items here! Most of the clothing is 60's/70's, with a large selection of 80's and a few 90's pieces in there as well. This used to be a great store that you could find real bargains/treasure in about 10 years ago. Then it got tons of press and got way too cool and uber expensive. The last few times I was there, things weren't priced and when I asked a price, either they couldn't get in touch with the consignor or I was given a price that was cost-prohibitive. Another time, I'd been eyeing an old tv which I planned to make into an aquarium for months. Then one of my friends went in there to buy it for me and let the cat out of the bag to the owners about my idea for it. The next day it was gone. Another time I was going to try to buy this beat up child's plastic hulk hand chair for a friend's child and I was quoted a price of $50 for it. read more

Where to take your too-cool-for-school Brooklynite brother and his girlfriend when they are in town for a unique experience? Father & Sons, that's where! When I first went to this place, I couldn't get over how BIG it was! It seemed to go on (and up) forever. I, personally, have not bought anything from this place yet. I think there is just so much and it's a lot to take in--tons of clothes, furniture, old cameras, post cards, art, books, you name it. There's also little novelty do-dads like silly magnets that are made to look retro, etc. It's a fun place to kill some time, and I've even been there during a First Friday event with a live Bluegrass band in the front room and wine and cheese on the very top floor, which is an art gallery. A warning if you use the bathroom, there isn't a sink! You have to use the hand sanitizer. Kind of caught me off guard. It does seem a bit too hip for me, but I get over it quickly enough when I start digging through all the treasure that's to be found. It's definitely a neat place to return to time and again. read more

If you are too lazy to go to thrift stores, yard sales, flea markets, and swap meets, then by all means, belly-up to this overpriced consignment shop. You'll pay way too much for what you're looking for and you're sure to bore your guests when the story behind your new chotchky is, "Oh, I found that at Father and Sons and it was pretty expensive." I mean, the stuff is cool, I won't deny that. But there is NOTHING ironic about paying way too much for your ironic "vintage" decor. I found the entire experience inauthentic. I mean, the point of "picking" is the adventure, so what is the point of shopping from somewhere that's done it for you? This place is totally geared for the yippie/yuppie/college kid with too much money who doesn't want to rub shoulders with the real hoi polloi. If that's you, you will LOVE this place. But you are a veteran of the real treasure hunting scene... you will find this place uninspired, overpriced, and... just wrong. read more

I love this store! My eyeballs were overwhelmed with all of the beautiful mid-century (my favorite) furniture and decor! I wanted to take home everything on the first level and fill my apartment with mid-century kitchy goodness. Sadly, the few items that caught my eye, specifically a beautiful tile inlay wooden table with hair pin legs (!), was out of my price range. It is definitely a curated collection and not a thrift store. I am going to save up for that table! The second floor is stuffy and full of vintage clothes. The third floor is an art gallery, which seemed disconnected from the rest of the store, but was still fun to walk through. The building itself is beautiful and has a great view and is close to a few parking garages. It is well within walking distance of downtown restaurants and a perfect destination for a Saturday afternoon! read more

I've decided that instead of 1 hour metered parking out front that there needs to be a 5-6 hour zone strictly for shoppers in this store. Why? Because that's how much time you could spent spelunking through the store and finding great little treasures. I didn't have much time when I went in (::cough::metered parking::cough::) but I was able to quickly peruse the main floor, basement and top two stories. This place is seriously huge. You wouldn't really know it when you first walk in but there is so much crammed into this massive store (massive for DTR) that you could probably spend a day just looking through stuff. I walked out with twenty 3.5" floppy discs. Yes, apparently floppy's are antique now. Not that I need or could even use these prehistoric information sharing devices but I plan on using them for a personal art project (TBD). I'm still hesitant to get them near a magnet though ::shudders:: memories.... I digress. You can find some real steals in this store and the associates are very friendly and helpful. I wish this place hadnt closed their basement area it really added a weird sort of charm to the place which I loved. The stuff youll give here is authentic, more vintage than antiques I feel like tdhough. I overall like the concept but here some stuff that could change for the better: 1. It seems/is way over priced for some of there stuff I was going to but a set of 3 glasses and they wanted 20 dollars for them which is steep when I could really get some classes and paint them. And thats just one example there are plenty more where im sure I could find stuff 2. I know places like this are suppose to be crowded but their second the third floors have so much stuff its almost annoying and you see so much stuff that sucks that you might totally miss something that awesome because your just tired rummaging through junk and when I say junk I mean you;ll have 4 boxes with the same album in it just to see if a diffrent one got mixed in, or like 10 dresses that were cool but had rips or a stain. 3. it wouldnt hurt if your staff smilled a little more overall I like to come and show people this place or I go it im really bored but I rare buy becasue the good stuff is way to expensive. read more

This is one of the best vintage stores I have ever shopped in. So many unique pieces of furniture, clothing items, wall decor, lamps, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.....! It's easy to overlook or sometimes skip over an entire area (or FLOOR) of the store because there is just that much to look at. I don't feel that this place is that pricey. My best advice: HAGGLE! Father and Sons was willing to come down on the price for every item I bought - for one item, they asked me to name a price. The price I named is what I bought it for. Everyone here is extremely friendly. We couldn't fit everything in our car, so they offered to drop it off at my apt. on their way home from work - for free! Really approachable, friendly individuals. I highly recommend this place if you're looking for that one-of-a-kind item you will not find anywhere else. read more

Great shop to find mid-century items. We bought a nice Hey-Wake dresser set many years back. I also bought a few records there before, although it's not really a destination for that type of thing. If you're into fun, geeky, junky awesomeness... this may be one of the best spots in Raleigh. Great place to spend a while in. Oh and the owner and his wife are really genuine, nice people. Sometimes, as others have mentioned, the prices can be a little high at times, but it's a business. They perform a service and that is the whole point. As a lover of vintage, Father & Son just fascinates me. Today I brought a friend there since she's looking for things to outfit her place. Needless to say, it didn't seem to be too much up her alley in tastes, but we had fun looking around. Not as many antiques, but a very good selection of vintage. I had a blast sifting through vintage dresses. They need another dressing room. I easily found 10 to dry on, but that meant my dress exploration held up two other groups of women. And I was rushing as quickly as I could. I found a few to take home. In previous visits, I've gone home with books, cowboy boots, and eclectic pieces of art. If there wasn't so much injustice, I would have been happily born in the 60's, 70's, or 80's. While I held up this or that, I easily imagined the setting where that decor would be appropriate or that outfit would be fun for a Mad Men party. There are like 5 levels of Father & Son's. You just have to keep looking around each bend. The highest level if books, records, and art (some of it is rather strange, but still cool!). The second story has vintage galore. The first floor as a mix. And I don't remember ever visiting the basement that I've heard of, but I'm sure there's even more treasures there. read more
