GREAT BARBER SHOP. Great cuts, great friendly barbers. Great old style shop. Fun place. Unfortunately because of Covid it went all appointments. You can no longer drop in and see if someone is available. If the wait wasn't too long it was really nice to sit in the waiting area and dive into the mountain of magazines mostly guy stuff, car magazines, travel, magazines for guys ( no Playboy or other soft porn). Yvonne is my go-to stylist (can't recommend her enough), but I've also been happy with the one or two cuts I've received from other barbers. Came here for a haircut today with Martin as my barber (he was recommended by a friend). I needed a high and tight after three long months of not seeing a barber because of Covid-19. All I can say is wow, the guy knows what he's doing. My appointment was at 12:30 and he promptly retrieved me at that time. In total, I was in the chair 15 mins. He was skilled and fast. I paid $26.00 and it was worth every penny. Finding a good barber in Edgewater and Lakeview can be a challenge because they aren't all skilled with buzzcuts (there is a difference between a barber and a stylist). I'll come back here for sure. Worst Haircut I've ever received. I told the barber that I just wanted to polish up my fade and blend it into what the length was on top of my head. It all seem good until he started cutting the top of my head. I assumed maybe it was to blend the cut a bit and wasn't too worried. Then afterward when he shows me turns out he cut my bangs too far back at the corners. Then get home and notice that theres spots in the fade that aren't blended evenly. Now I have a legit windows peak style haircut with an uneven fade. Sad part is I wanted to try somewhere local instead of commuting to my regular guy in the burbs. Definitely won't be returning ever again and gonna advise others not to either. read more

I just don't get it. I've given these guys several opportunities to get it right. Sentimental for an Old world barbershop, which conjures memories of kind and friendly faces with warm greetings? Not here. The owners up front seem nice, but the other guys need personality transplants. ALL the ones I have hired to cut my hair, anyway. I can't speak for the rest. I just don't vibe with these guys. They CAN do better, and choose not to. THEY SEEM TO HATE THEIR JOBS. Down to business to the point of being aggressive and simultaneously disinterested. They don't say hello or introduce themselves. I do and did. Then, ZERO friendly interaction. It was almost as if this last guy was saying, "what the fuck are you doing here wasting my time?" Your job is to cut my hair even if I had one hair in my damn head - that's literally your job. Asking -- no, demanding and nearly insisting I know what number I use on my hair to the point where I felt I was being SHAMED because I did not. ZERO creativity. Completely incapable of understanding what I wanted - a trim/clean up. How can you not understand this? My hair is a half an inch to an inch long. Newsflash: I don't cut my own hair and I have no idea what number I want. That's YOUR job, not mine. The most recent guy seemed incapable of proceeding with the cut unless I gave him my number. Like a penny arcade robot where if you didn't drop a coin in the slot, it wouldn't animate and perform its function. Terrible energy. Negative experience. I couldn't wait to leave. I don't know, but when I get my haircut it's about the connection with the person and this guy was a dick. So was the previous guy at the same establishment who was more interested in surfing the web on his phone. Yes, his PHONE!! WHILE I was sitting in the chair waiting for my haircut. NOT just for a second. At least a full minute. Making me wait. Not even acknowledging me with a hello. I was so pissed I got up from the barber chair and went to the bathroom to cool down. I came back a minute later, he was STILL on his phone! CLUELESS OR UTTERLY STUPID. I sat down again, waited and looked at him for at least 30 seconds until I finally said, "are you ready to cut my hair now?" If I have one regret, it's that I tipped these guys too much when they did NOT deserve it. Didn't' even check my eyebrows or do the hot shave on the neck either. This has been my go to barbershop for the past 5 years. The building has a good vibe filled with even greater people. If you're looking to form a relationship with your barber or just in need for a haircut/beard trim, this is your go to place. The price for a haircut is $26. I believe it is cash only! There are about 8 individuals who work here; you first walk into the shop and sign-in by writing your name on a whiteboard. PSA: Every time I've gone I have to wait about 45min - 1.5 hours because they can get very busy(Wait times can be longer if you wait for a certain barber/ I always end up going during the busiest hours). If you go during a non busy hour I'm sure the wait time would be about 10 minutes. You can call and see what the current wait is /or you can sign in and they'll tell you the current wait time and you're free to roam the neighborhood and come back. I was tired of my boys getting crappy haircuts at discount hair places. Father & Son was recommended to me by a handful of friends so I brought my kids in. As far as I can tell, they do not take appointments. You come in and write your name on the white board towards the back of the room. If you have a preference regarding who cuts your hair, you make a note of that on the board. We heard good things about Anthony and Pete so we requested them. Came here some time back. I still remember the bad experience. Some barber named Mikey gave me a bad haircut. He pivoted from a career as an interior designer. That should've been my first red flag. I asked him to give me a professional, classic haircut that goes well with a suit. Instead he gave a wimpy crew cut. When I told him he messed up, he asked what I do. Grab a chair on the wall and listen as the barbers and regulars share stories. Soon enough you're next and relax as you enjoy and old school barber shop experience. However, this place is pretty surreal in the junction of its long corridor like spacing with 7 barber seats on the left hand side when walking in. I walked in around noon and there were about 12 people waiting with every seat taken already with haircuts being clipped away in a stylized fashion. Every one person here is a great stylist indeed. I spent the hour and half waiting for "Mitch," which I picked out from a friends recommendation. However, if I had wanted my haircut by whom ever was available; I could have had my haircut squared away within 10-15 minutes tops. Haircuts start at $23. Seniors and kids $20. Beard trim $10. Beard and face $26. Not a bad deal for the superb quality and attention to detail professionalism. My BF has been going to Father & Son for many, many haircuts and comes home looking sharp every time. For this alone I am thankful. He's told me many times about the great atmosphere and banter between the brothers and the customers. He told me it's clean, and the appointments run smoothly. I'm writing because today I got to see all of this for myself when we brought our son in for his first haircut on his first birthday. We called ahead to make sure they cut kids' hair, specifically the little guys. Yep! When we got there, what looked like a 3 year old was having his hair cut and was having a great time of it. We waited maybe 10 minutes for our son's turn with no appointment. The place is very clean, there are TV's to watch (mostly sports), and plenty of magazines that are in good condition. The stuffed raccoon on top of the soda machine did give me a bit of the heebie jeebies. For what it's worth, it's a pretty damn good taxidermy job, so maybe ask where they got theirs done, if you're into that sort of thing. Pete normally cuts my BF's hair, so he took care of our son. He was OK with me snapping photos (I'll upload one here) while he worked. He was fast, funny, and our son's hair looks great! Pete asked us if we had any preferences for the haircut. We told him to make it look good, and that's it. Two new parents, one wielding a camera, and no guidance. No problem! Pete made us laugh, made my son smile, and managed to give my squirmy kid a great haircut in maybe about 10 minutes. My kid always looked like he was sporting a combover like Sol Goodman. It turns out when he has a good haircut, it doesn't look like that anymore! I'm glad we trusted Pete and didn't try to micromanage. Let the guy do his job, yeah? Definitely recommend. read more

I first came to Father and Son as a recommendation when I was wearing a full beard. My barber asked if I wanted a trim as well and I told him I had a stylist I had been loyal to. After the second time I came in my hair needed a little clean up which he did just to keep me looking neat. The third time I came in I finally decided it was inconvenient and expensive to drive to two shops so I let Martin take the reigns. I've always gotten a great cut - and you don't have to worry about getting anyone inexperienced. On my last trip my regular guy was taking a day off and I was in "Moses Mode" (long curly grey hair) Pete told me that "the New Kid Joey" was open. Joey gave me a stellar cut and beard trim. Great Bunch of Guys and Gal (they have a female Barber who holds her own against the Sons! Great old school Chicago atmosphere and if you are lucky you might even get an audience with Joe Sr - the founder! He's still kicking and clipping! Reasonable Price and Jovial Atmosphere - just be aware - you'll sometimes need to wait because they have (6) chairs but they are usually always full - but in a good way. read more

Let's review all the things they did wrong, besides massacring my haircut: - first time going, they are not welcoming at all - there is a board you are supposed to sign-up on, but it is disorganized and wasn't clear as to its purpose - the staff are like a bunch of high school children, complete with inside jokes and cliques - the guy who cut my hair was unsociable.
