I had no intention of dragging out the divorce as long as the marriage. Texas family law is as frustrating as the power grid, so I needed someone who could get the job done and represent me. I wanted a lawyer who was a woman, intelligent, direct, and not too emotional. I did not need hugs, I needed a divorce. I interviewed several attorneys to represent me. Some were nice but weak, some were rage-filled and vengeful towards the spouse, and others made me wonder what some law schools are doing with their curriculum. Alex was nothing like other lawyers. Granted, she had completed law school and undergraduate studies like everyone else I had interviewed, but she was not interested in boasting about her accomplishments (which are impressive and lengthy). As I spoke to Alex, I realized that this was the lawyer who checked all of the boxes I required and many more. She is ruthlessly efficient, able to anticipate my questions before I know what they are, and moves paperwork through the glacially slow wheels of justice in the Dallas court system at a shockingly quick pace. Plus, she has a sense of humor, which is required when getting a divorce. If you do not laugh at some of the stuff encountered, you will cry all the time. From retainer to the "thanks for the memories" exit call, the process lasted about 5 months. The legal portion took less than four months from filing to final decree with the notarization stamp. I have friends who are still working through the process after years of issues. Alex, Brandy, and Katie were exceptionally clear when giving directions on what I needed to do, provided paperwork that needed to be signed in a very efficient manner, and always answered the emails I sent with little waiting by me. I emailed a lot, and those emails were full of questions, directions, and sarcasm. Each question was answered, directions followed, and sarcasm met with sarcasm, so we were evenly matched. I was able to keep the divorce amicable, and spent less time on the actual process than I did deciding to file for divorce. They did not save any paperwork out of his house, nothing from his business was managed, business assets never established and sold. It has been nothing but chasing them the whole process(still going currently). It seems like a conflict of interest that they wrote the will and named themselves the executor of the estate. I REGRET hiring C Luke Gunnstaks and Gunnstaks Law Firm. I have in writing from Gunnstaks, that I "would receive all of my money in the IOLTA account." When I began realize in August 2017 (after the court hearing the end of July and only a few days after the second mediation) what had happened in my case and began asking for Gunnstaks to be accountable for his actions and also his invoicing and statements, Gunnstaks began saying I was delusional and needed psychiatric medical care. He withheld $25,054.75 from my IOLTA account for the months of Aug. 2017 to the final decree date of 12/04/17 which equals a billing of approx.$6,236.87 a month! There were NO in person court appearances or mediations and I had to be proactive forwarding documents to Opposing Counsel myself. I also began doing my own research and found many discrepancies from what I had been and what was reality. Thus I began asking more questions in reference to accountability. Gunnstaks continued telling me I was delusional and need psychiatric help and would not sit down and go over his invoices. His taking the $25,054.75 was also above and beyond his being paid $18,850.00 in cash, for a Divorce for a couple who were both over 67 yrs. of age, married 10 years at the time and had no children. Grand total received by Gunnstaks: $43,904.75! Gunnstaks had told me he would have my divorce final by 08/02/2017 and it was not final until 12/04/2017. There were also many other issues from August going forward. I was in shock the day of my court appearance and when I received my case docs, I found that Gunnstaks DID NOT HAVE ANY HAND WRITTEN NOTES from the first Mediation! I then wanted to settle and Gunnstaks told me "Rebecca, give me 2 days and I will have the cases!" He later told me he had them. 2nd Mediation, he did not have any cases pertaining to my issue. There are so many other issues; filling out the original Contract of Services in the wrong name, and filling out a single Limited Power of Attorney in 3 different names, Rebbecca, Walter and Watler and changing the date without my initials! He forwarded to me the wrong Divorce Decree to sign for court, and he changed items on my Divorce Decree without my knowledge or consent and forwarded them to Opposing Counsel! The list does not stop here. Gunnstaks was to provide me ALL OF MY ORIGINAL CASE DOCUMENTS and HIS HANDWRITTEN NOTES WERE WITHHELD! He would not forward them to me by Certified Mail, so I had to send a 2nd Courier to pick them up.Gunnstaks banned me from his office so I was not able to pick up my own documents and a Courier had to sign for them "blindly" not knowing what was or not being received etc. thus the second courier. I also had to hire another attorney to review and make corrections necessary to my final divorce decree. This is what Gunnstaks wrote in a Certified Letter to me with a check for the balance of my IOLTA account after he took out "what he thought was fair and reasonable expenses" ($25,054.75): "It is my sincere hope that you will seek professional mental health care as I have only recently suggested, and I hope that you will faithfully follow any medication recommendations of your treating physician/psychiatrist, in order to avoid being foreseeably found to be a danger to yourself and/or to others by a Judge of a Probate (Mental Health) Court." I feel this is a threat. (2026 Update: Read reviews from here and other sources...POT CALLING THE KETTLE BLACK...this is Gunnstaks comeback for any fallout on his part!) I do not want Gunnstaks to do to anyone else, what I have been through. 03/12/2023 UPDATE...I haven't thought of this in several years...but recently I watched the nationwide/worldwide trial of an attorney who lied to his clients, stole their money and had no remorse. I thought...WOW! Then this morning, in clearing some old old docs from my computer, I found this. Thought both were very interesting and thought perhaps it was a sign I should post this document likewise. Be careful out there!
