Another successful place on our big bbq roadtrip. We are trying to find these mom and pop amazing bbq shops ! Pulled in 45 mins before they close so they ran out of some of the options (specifically rib rips ) Very rustic and old decor , exactly the type we like to go in ! What did we try - 1) ribs slab - fantastic choice . Get them . They are so juicy and tender , and a combination of the white and hot sauce on them..was just excellent 2) wings - served a little cold , and felt like they might have been sitting out for a few hours . They were good but not great . 3/5 3) pulled pork - excellent! Not then best one we had but very good. They had some unique sweetness, and w the hot sauce was very yummy . 4/5 All together , worth the stop . Focus on the ribs !

So far this is my favorite bbq spot I've come across in Montgomery. Their smoked wings were cooked perfectly and their pulled pork sandwich is by far the best I've ever had. I will say the place doesn't look the cleanest when you first walk in, but it doesn't affect the taste or quality of the food at all. Highly recommended if you're in the area.

It is rare that I will write a review immediately after dining at a restaurant, but in this case I will make the exception. As I've mentioned in the past, anytime I'm South of Richmond, VA, I always strive to enjoy Southern fare and especially barbecue. BBQ down south is akin to a religion, where generations of pit masters pass along secrets of specific spice rubs, using only certain purveyors to get their hickory or mesquite logs, and of course, controlling temperatures and cook times to get the perfect crust and consistency of the meat. Let me put this in simple terms - Fatman's Smokehouse is the REAL DEAL. The interior is basic and reminiscent of a bbq joint from the 50's. Basic tables with rolls of paper towels, sit on top of a plain floor, dingy lighting, and ceiling fans to cool the otherwise nondescript dining areas. And when you get your food, it is served on Styrofoam with plastic cutlery. But the ribs - OMFG, they are out of this world "amazing". The ribs have that bark that I'm always looking for in good 'cue, which has a slight crunch, but then quickly gives way to tender succulent meat. The only slight detraction is that the rub might be a bit too salty...but that's just my taste. There are a variety of sauces near the drink station, of which I recommend the "hot" and the "white" sauce. The "hot" sauce is the House bbq sauce with a spicy (but not too spicy) kick to it. The "white" sauce taste like a mix of ranch, light horseradish, and mayo. It doesn't sound like it would be appetizing, but trust me, you will be surprised at how good it is. I also got the house beans as a side, and a nice bonus is that there are strands of pulled pork mixed in. The beans have a slight molasses notes but the smoke flavor helps to temper the sweetness. But having the pulled pork mixed in with each bite, really elevates the humble beans to awesome side dish. I don't normally think of Alabama as one of the classic centers of BBQ, but Fatman's has changed my mind. The ribs here rival ANYTHING I've had in Memphis, North Carolina, and come close to the mecca of Kansas City, MO. I'm only in town for a few days for business, but I have a feeling I'll be eating here...A LOT!

Awesome place to eat for you and your family. This is the best bbq in Montgomery hands down. The staff are always friendly the restaurant is always clean and they serve you very quickly. Take out or dine in plenty of seating none on the outside. BBQ fry's are a must try as well as some fantastic ribs.

    Those ribs.

The ribs were delicious. And that is pretty much it. They have weird hours, but it is expected in a small town.

Awesome BBQ and awesome service. A bit "divey," but the best restaurants usually are. A Montgomery must try!

I like the ribs. Quick service, I was in and out in 5 mins - during busy hours of lunch. Try their white sauce mixed with hot bbq.

The price of everything was extremely reasonable. The food itself was fairly good. The chicken and sausage were tasty. Truthfully the ribs didn't taste as good as they were hyped up. The staff made the experience worth it. I don't recall the waitresses name unfortunately but she was amazing. I was in for a business trip and asked for recommendations. She was extremely funny and personable. We were some of the last people to leave and by the end of the night she ended up chatting with us for a while.

The ribs were larger than expected with a tangy vinegar based sauce that made them delicious flavorful. The smoked sausage was just as good without being too dry. The chicken was juicy and we'll shredded, and the spicy rib wrap was well balanced with the portions that had some heat to the coleslaw due to jalapenos on it The sides were very good with the beans being the best option. The mac and cheese should have been the hero and while they were cheesy they lacked that favor you'd expected from a BBQ joint. The potato salad was decent, but nothing to write home about. Honestly the fried okra was surprisingly the second best as the sweet coleslaw underperformed Overall, the meats made the trip worth it, the vibe was amazing as it had that laid back feel and the service was great! They don't sell hard liquor so went with beer, but the selections we limited. I'd still recommend trying them out if you are ever in town. Cool spot that makes you feel like you're in the South!

Is it becoming harder to source the quality tender ribs or are the quality ribs becoming more scarce or inaccessibly expensive? Whatever the case may be, things took a back step this time and the ribs did not have the smoked taste as I have experienced before. Did the ribs need to be on a little longer? I ordered three slabs and large sides of potato salad, baked beans, and coleslaw. Surprisingly, the baked beans were the weakest of the three. The potato salad was markedly better and the coleslaw was the best for my tastes. I still maintain Brenda's is the place to get great smoked ribs, but this weekend was not their best effort. Brenda's is the best place to get your bones in Montgomery and I take them back with me to NYC because they're that good. 4.0 stars!

(My only gripe was walking away smelling like bbq smoke) I haaaaaate this so bad! The rib plate comes with about 5 bones and two sides. $18 roughly. This was a serious plate with great portions! Definitely had leftovers. I got coleslaw and baked beans to go along with my ribs. Both sides dishes were exceptional! Sooooo good!!! The bbq sauce was amazing as well. Their menu has a number of entree items and traditional sides. It's cash only so be prepared. There is street parking and private parking available. These were some of the best ribs I've ever had!!!! The place is not the cleanest-- floors needed vacuuming, chairs were held together with duck tape.. but I pressed on hoping the food would redeem the space. Service was friendly. However, it was awkward listening to the waiter/waitresses/hostess/ kitchen staff have a conversation with each other across the entire restaurant. This was especially true after a patron sent something back and the kitchen came out loudly exclaiming that they wanted to see the food that "wasn't good enough." I had the fried chicken, greens, okra, and mashed potatoes. The chicken was fantastic. Perfectly cooked, juicy, and the tastiest fried skin/breading. That's where the goodness stops. The turnip greens were flavorless and complete mush, as though they had been sitting on the heat all day. Mashed potatoes were clearly from a box based on the consistency, color and flavor. Gravy had no flavor as well. There wasn't enough salt on the table to make it all better. The okra came out about 15min after we got our plates. It was fresh, but again, flavorless. My husband had the fried pork chop. It was just okay -- cooked well, zero flavor. Butter beans were good flavor wise, but definitely seemed to have been sitting for a while. It was odd to us that the only things you could get to drink were water, tea, lemonade, milk, and coffee. The second star is only for the chicken. I doubt we'll go back because the above experience for $50 is not worth it.
