We came here for a wine tasting. The wine label name Ottomani is Italian for "8 hands" because 4 young fellows started this winery a couple decades ago. Their intent was to honor the old-time way of making chianti wines but to put a new twist on it by distilling the wine in non-traditional ways. Such as aging their sangiovese in terracotta cisterns or their chianti classico in cement vats (an ancient method). One of the owners gave us four tastings and provided a basic charcuterie plate. The casual, relaxed seating was outdoors on a beautiful day. The wines had a different taste than traditional wines from this region. I liked them all; they seemed to have a smoother taste. Not being a sommelier I can't properly describe what the exact difference was. I liked them well enough that I ordered some to be shipped home. Kudos to these guys for winemaking in their own way and breaking tradition.

The main point of interest is the wine that they age in terracotta containers, vs. wooden barrels. The wine tasting (and olive oil and balsamic vinegar tasting) were very good, and we ended up ordering several bottles of wine shipped home (and skipped dinner out that night). Gabriel gave us interesting information about the Castle, which was built in the 11th century by Benedict monks! He showed us interesting things such as a hidden room where people can spy into the dining room through a hole in a painting, an underground tunnel, and a theater with its original backdrop from 1742. Don't forget to take a few pictures at the giant bench which is a few minutes' walk away. The view is gorgeous and the grounds are well maintained. For the tasting portion, we really enjoy the high quality of wine. Gabriel was also nice enough to let us sample a few other wines beyond the ones included in tasting, such as the dessert wine and the whites. Quite a few of us bought some bottles to take home. There are plenty of wineries in the area and we had visited quite a few of them during our three weeks in Tuscany. This is definitely one of the better ones, for the castle's history, the view, and the quality of wine.

Look, I've been wine tasting before. I'm cultured. I usually go to the bathroom in the bathroom. But I was completely unprepared for this lunch. Partially because my friends who booked it didn't tell us we were tasting wine at a Michelin starred restaurant (and partially because I was deeply hungover from all the wine I "tasted" the night before). In any case, I was not at my best when I arrived. But the hospitality here is unmatched. They welcomed us in like we were guests in their home, offering espresso and anything else we needed before the informative and interesting tour of the monastery where they make and store the wine, including the 1000 year old rooms where they used to smoke meat, and store food. The entire estate is absolutely gorgeous. We were here in May, and everything was blooming. They have an incredible garden in the back which I assume provides much of the produce for our meals, and you can taste the quality and the freshness in their "garden's fresh salad" which was one of the five courses on our menu (that in reality looked and tasted like no salad I've ever seen). This menu underpromised, and the staff overdelivered. While there were five courses, there were also several bites, and tastes, and dips, and even mini-sandwiches of anchovy and butter and dehydrated chicken essence that blew my mind. By the time we finished the incredible cannelloni with roasted beef sauce, and started on the duck l'orange, we were bursting at the seams. I cursed my mother for instilling in me a need to finish everything that was put in front of me, but I was never not going to eat that airy focaccia paired with the silkiest olive dip you've ever seen. One of my friends joked (I think), "If they bring us any more food I'm burning this place to the ground." And of course, every bit of this food was paired with a fabulous wine from their estate. That monastery is filled with bottles of delicious chianti classico, tignanello, barolo, and more. It was amazing. It was excessive. I loved it all. It wasn't cheap, but it was worth it.

We were taken to this lovely estate, while dodging roosters and chickens as our bus entered through the main gate. It's such a picturesque setting for a wine tasting. I can see that many events are celebrated in these vineyards all year round. The beautiful rose bushes along the trail leading to the wine tasting room added even more charm. Gabrielle was our guide for this tour. He gave us a great presentation of all that Tenuta Torciano has to offer. It all started with the appetizer plate that went perfectly with their amazing Vernaccia wine. It is such a beautiful golden color with a bright and crisp fruity taste. The grape is only grown in this region. It's a must try when in San Gimignano. I was also very much in love with the Rosato IGT Toscana wine that is very deep pink in color. It looks so pretty in the bottle. It was my second favorite of the 9 or 10 different wines that we tasted. It was an extremely generous amount for the cost. I even purchased a couple of reds, which I'm not usually fond of because they give me headaches. These did not have that affect on me. The Super Tuscan red wines called Bartolomeo & Baldassarre totally won me over. In all honesty, I've never spent this much on wine in my entire life. It was worth it. They ship it straight to your home. They have a stateside warehouse in Chicago which makes it so convenient. The package arrived a couple of days after we returned from our trip. It was exactly what we ordered, and packed with such wonderful care. Great service! We also were given the opportunity to try their flavored olive oils and balsamic vinegar. The truffle oil was drizzled over the lasagna for the tasting, but it was the balsamic vinegar that was a big hit with my husband. We've been getting a lot of use out of it when making bruschetta and caprese salad at home. It's delicious! The sweet ending to our tasting was the Vin Beato dessert wine. We dipped the cantucci (or biscotti cookies) into the wine. It was the perfect ending to a lovely wine tasting experience. I really wasn't expecting a full meal, nor was I expecting so many different wine samplings. It exceeded our expectations. I believe they have a number of different experiences here like truffle hunting and horseback riding. Just check out their website. All the wine is labeled by region and the staff working there is very well informed which is a huge help. Wines are not cheap - it is a good enoteca with some really great wines (and hard liquors like scotch). I recommend going out of a 'chianti classico' comfort zone and trying a really good red wine from Piemonte (like Barolo) or Amarone from Verona.

With the prices here, you could literally do your own wine tour of Tuscany in this store alone. It's about a ten minute walk east from the Duomo. The best wine shop in Florence, by far!
