Could FD studio be my new LA photography home away from home? Nestled deep in the Fashion District of LA, right by the world famous Santee Alley, the Art Studios are nothing but exquisite. A great commercial use space, with great half and full day rates, and convenient hours; the FD simply delivers. The staff was eager to help, with a selection of grip and gels, as well as light modifiers, V Flats, Wind machines and staging props, it would be hard to NOT do a great shoot here. There are several themed rooms from a romance inspired, to a rustic wood room to the sterile all-white room. TIPS: There is parking next door on the roof, that day we paid about $20 flat rate, but the parking is only until 7 on that Sunday (might be different Sat/Sun), so be aware of that. You really do not need a lot of gear, as the studio has a lot, but if you're unsure, definitely use a roll cart. The lights that are in the studio are Paul C Buff/ABs if that helps. Studio booked, spoke to a person on the phone, fully paid for, and then when we showed at our time 9am this morning, no one was present and no one was responding to calls. Via the text chat on FD's site, the person on the other end made up answers which I've screenshot. When you book a studio for a paid shoot, and they aren't open, you not only are out the money for the rental (which may be credited or refunded) you are out the money for what you were booked for, in my case $250. And the people who book you equate your professionalism with the other people you work with, meaning the studio's screw up is perceived as your screw up. That alone is a reason to never ever use FD again- a company that purports to be more organized and all-in-one with unique spaces, but is no more than flakey people who may or may not show up to work depending if they feel like it- but the equipment I've had "included" in previous rentals typically is the cheap Amazon LEDs, very small and typically broken barn doors, no rotation on light stands meaning you can't aim them, and usually those are broken as well. Terrible terrible experience at this studio. I have used other studios from other companies and will never use any FD studio again. I reached out to them to express my concerns and dissatisfaction and received no response. Upon arriving I realized the door was locked. Reservation confirmation said nothing about a code so I called and called the desk several times and it would to to a voicemail. I pressed the call button and still nothing. I waited outside for over 20 minutes and finally a man from one of the little shops next door assisted me. I got to the studio and the floors were dirty and dusty, the chairs were DISGUSTING...so ashamed of even sitting a client in them, tree was broken and the backdrops had foot prints on them. FD is one of my favorite studios to shoot at in LA. I just got done shooting in Art 3, and I love the updates they made to it compared to the last time I saw it in there. The girl working the desk (I forget her name) was really sweet. When one of the lights wasn't working, she got me a new one and gave us extra time. When I need a gels, she loaned me some that they have on hand for customers. My photos came out gorgeous. Everything went great. Will definitely be back again. And again. read more

Absolutely perfect experience at a price you can afford. The face of photography is changing and FD Studio is such a smart solution to capture those special moments without the help of a so called, "professional photgrapher". With everything included all you need to bring is your subject and your camera. Well lit makeup table, lots of outlets and extension cords, seating, a private dressing area, fans, lights, triggers, props, all included! They even have a rooftop with skyline views, gorgeous! Bring water and park for $7 on Santee. Even a novice can do this, do yourself a favor and check this place out for a couple of hours just to see what you can do. Came here to do a photoshoot. We booked it off of peerspace but when we got there the lady at the front told us it would be cheaper and easier just to book of their direct site. We got the big Art 1 room that was all white. It comes with a changing room, a few mirrors, some couches, fans, lighting, and a baby grand piano. Some of the things were a little dusty but the space overall was super easy to work with. There are a lot of different walls and things in the room to use. There's water and restrooms outside down the hallway. The room gets stuffy but there are powerful fans and you can open the windows. This place is very professional. read more

I recently had a shoot in Art4 and it was amazing! First of all the staff was amazing and super nice. We were checked in quickly and they made sure we had everything we needed. The actual studio space was huge! It included a dressing room with a mirror, vanity space for 2, and an extra couch and table to keep our stuff. We used our own lighting but there was equipment provided. Art 4 had 3 solid color backdrops in grey, black, and white. There were 2 full dark paneled walls, 2 burgundy leather chairs, a tall dark wood paneled mini wall, a fun hanging chair, big windows that let in lots of light, and my favorite, a giant lit star! We definitely had some fun that day! I would definitely recommend This studio to anyone and we'll definitely be visiting again! read more

I really can't say enough about FD Photo Studios...you really get your bang for your buck. The Art studios are beautiful and very affordable. I have shoot there a lot over the last 2 years and use them as my go to studio in DTLA. You are looking at about $45 an hour -that includes 3 strobes with a trigger...you get 3 backgrounds (black, grey or white) all for that price, but if you want to color backgrounds -add $20 - There are 4 studios plus an awesome roof to choice from. The Art Studios also have great windows for that natural light look. And the view from the roof is very urban- No matter what level you are at- if you want to get better-this studio is your canvas...Now go create something beautiful- Also- the employees are all very cool and knowledgeable- You do need to call about a week in advance to reserve a studio...oh and no deposit required ~ Love it there. read more

I have been coming to the FD Photo Studio Art Stages for the past year now and I have had amazing success with my shoots every time in all 4 of the stages! The lighting is always so bright and even making it so easy to get beautiful photos, and the shadow play during golden hour is beyond!! For how much space, and the unique quality you get very ever stage, the hourly prices for the studios you just can't beat! So worth it! I shot in Studio F which is a perfect size if you're shooting on a backdrop. They also have a Bluetooth speaker in the rooms which is perfect in case you forgot to bring one! read more

I had a quick shoot here last month in the Art 2 studio. I was invited along as one of the photographers for a Christmas shoot. The staff got the trigger and strobe setup and I was on my way to a great shoot. Location is very nice and large. Props were also available for themed shoot. FD has quite a great selection of themed studios and overall it's good value. Highly recommended. read more

Do not use for filming! We called them to inquire about a film location to shoot some yoga and meditation videos. They stated people film there all the time and slyly slid in "we can't guarantee it's 100% sound proof. Our filming day comes and four of us huff it downtown and spend an hour setting up in their 105 degree studio space. There was a broken swamp cooler and no air conditioning. Directly across the street was a stereo store with a guy who had 6 foot speakers blasting at about 120db. As we started to film, the room next to us started blaring techno. We shut all the windows which made it even hotter. It was incredibly loud so we had to stop and start, trying to get anything we could but the noise was unbearable and bleeding through all our mics. A few hours later the room on the other side started blasting rap music at about 140 db. I went down the hall and was told they were shooting a rap video!' So after a day of hell it cost of $1,000 in extra editing time to remove the background noise (which we had to mask with licensed music) and a product where our meditation teacher was dripping sweat and makeup, we called F&D to ask for a refund. Their response? "We told you we don't guarantee it to be soundproof and our owners don't like to give refunds". Hmmm. There's a huge difference between not guaranteeing something and renting an unusable space for filming. So guess what? Your owners are going to like even less when I call the health department and the better business Buereau tomorrow. Bottom line, unless your shooting a silent film, beware F&D!! read more

We LOVE FD Photo Studio! This is our fourth time using these studios! We always have the best experience. The employees are so nice, and the studios are amazing! I love the room selection they have! Especially for the prices! We've used a black out room, a light an open room with windows, and one with lights on the walls! Our next stop will definitely be the rain room! I'm a Director/Photographer. Having rented and shot in other stages within other FD Photo Studio locations, I was welcomed by the usual cool, casual and professional atmosphere. Even with a building elevator under repair, they were able to not only make their freight available to use to cart up heavy equipment, but even GUIDE you from the street - not easy to do! Always prepared, the staff there knows their gear and was helpful when I needed it on my shoot. Always affordable, scaled based on your professional needs and growing in background and space variety, I am really excited about not only their LA Stages but their new New York Stages! Hi, I'm a photographer and I recently shot at the Art 1 stage. If you're a local artist you must have been here at some point but if you're not - put that on your list of places to check out for shoots. Last time I shot there, I used only natural light and the images turned out great - bright, clean, didn't even need much editing. I love everything about FD: the industrial vibe, bright light, wooden stages, props, equipment, rooftop and more. They have many awesome locations (and about to open few more stages yey!) so you can definitely find something that works with your time frame. + folks that work there are just awesome ;) read more

First time shooting here at FD. Used the Art 2 stage and it was legit! Great pricing, clean areas, and friendly staff. The day we went the elevator was not working so our artist had to haul all of their gear up the stairs but we did find out there was a service elevator on the side we could use. So that made it easier to go back down. Will definitely book with FD again! read more

I recently came to FD Photo Studios for a music video shoot and it was such a great experience because they literally try to make their space accommodating as possible! I used the 2nd Studio and it was a great shoot because not only could we access what was in the room, but if we needed anything that wasn't being used by other visitors, we would have access to that as well. The staff was fun, professional and very understanding to the difficulties that came up during our shoot. I all in all had a positive experience with FD studios, but my biggest wish, especially as a student filmmaker working with a very low budget is if there was a better way to get some deals and discounts on the space! What a great gem! I've shot all over downtown LA and this is my first experience with FD Photo Studio. The different rooms create amazing back drops for photos and the natural light is perfect. Shooting here on a hot SoCal day isn't the absolute best since it's an old building and there isn't any central air.
