After traveling around Spain and Portugal, I started missing American style breakfast. Federal Café did not disappoint. I went twice. The first time I ordered the bacon egg dish served in a small skillet. It was delicious. The second time I had the egg Benedict and that was divine. Floor to ceiling windows give the indoor space a seamless transition to the plaza outside, where in warm weather has outdoor seating. First, I love the fact that this place is in an open courtyard surrounded by trees. It makes a very pleasant time to eat breakfast. Second, the service is good. The servers don't hover, but are eager to assist if you ask them. We tried the eggs Benedict. It was good and a lot. This can be shared by two people. Nice place to have brunch! It is very friendly toward students and there were a lot of people studying/ working on laptops. They also offered menus in English and Spanish which was nice. I got a cafe mocha and the banana pancakes for €10 -- both were delicious. The service was a little bit confusing, they tell you where to sit but you have to go to the counter to order. read more

I saw many great reviews about this place, but it was a little of a let down. The pancakes were great, maybe just a little plainer and stickier than i thought. The açaí smoothie was really great and had a good flavor, just thinner consistency than most. The portion of the crossaint sandwich was a little small from what my mom ordered. Europe has been romanticized in every book and movie as having these amazing laid back cafes, in a square overlooking monuments that are more than hundreds of years old, surrounded by the most gorgeous people you have seen...fantasy? Not if you are at this Federal Cafe. If I didn't know better I would say this cafe was the inspiration for all those Hollywood stereotypes. Set in an open cobblestone square, with narrow picturesque alleys that lead your way to the cafe, and open windows that let you people watch as you sip that amazing chai tea latte or regular latte - it is perfect! Their croissants, avocado toast, and their baked goods are delicious. Their lunch items, while creative, are not as amazing as their breakfast fare. But it is easy to look past these shortcomings when you are waited upon by the nicest staff in Spain. The prices are a little high and if you find yourself of coming in during rush hour, the wait could be a little excruciating. Come early, stay as long as you want (they will not kick you out), sip and enjoy the lifestyle of the laid back European cafe experience. read more

This place deserves five stars for three reasons. 1. it has excellent fresh food which is well prepared. 2. it was right around the corner from where we were staying which was the Mercado de San Miguel, and 3. it was the only place open at 9 o'clock in the morning for breakfast. Every other breakfast or brunch place opens at 10 or 11 am. Now I understand that this is Spain and people eat meals later, including breakfast. I do appreciate that, especially eating late dinners which I like. However, if you have plans for the day or tours to catch, you don't want to be eating breakfast at 10 or 11 am because you won't get started before noon or 1 pm. read more

This place was very good and in fairly good location. We got the pancakes, eggs Benedict, an açaí smoothie, and a mimosa and all were delicious. I was a big fan of the brittle they added to the pancakes. I would give them 5 stars if it were just for the food but the service wasn't perfect. Great vibes, decent place to work. The drinks, from teas to coffee to alcoholic milkshakes, are incredible. Lots of unique combinations and fun things to try, as well as solid staples like coffee. Easily 4/5 stars for the drinks BUT.... the food is pretty terrible. Like not worth ordering kind of terrible. The burger is best to be avoided and the fries are thicker anyone could reasonably enjoy. Literally 1/2 stars. and the service is detestable, even for Europe. We had a great breakfast here recovering from jet lag. Arrived around 10 on a Sunday and were able to get a seat at the bar by the window. Great coffee selection (including actual coffee "long black" not just americanos I'm subjected to elsewhere). Ordered the brioche toast with a fried egg and no ham which was FAB - rich but also a bit salty w the egg on top --- perfection. BF got the eggs on toast - we ordered sunny side over which didn't translate too well bc the egg came out cooked all the way through, but whatev no biggie. I added on a croissant at the end bc I can't help myself, buttery and delightful. Service was fine, not snappy but they were busy and spoke enough English to make it happen so that's a win for me. We loved it. They were working a line by like 11 so if you have more than two people I'd go earlier to try to get a jump on the later crowd. Thank you Federal! read more

This place had an amazing menu, great brunch spot, sandwiches looked great. However, I can unequivocally say that this was the WORST Caesar salad I had had in my life. The dressing is awful. I thought at first there was just not enough and asked for an extra on the side (which they charged me for), but it turns out no amount of that dressing could make it better. Any dressing from a grocery store would be better than that dressing. I HIGHLY recommend switching the dressing or at least adding some lemon. read more

Our kids and us enjoyed our breakfast which were the morning bacon burger and huevos horno champino. Good service. Lovely ambience.

Ordered the toast with avocado and the bread was hard as a rock. Then not even busy and yet there was no toilet paper. Not impressed.
