This was a great stop and location next to the vertical garden across the café. The owners were super nice and friendly and gave us really unique coffee cocktail drinks with Baileys. I stopped in before visiting an exhibit at the nearby Caixa Madrid (with its vertical garden - hence the name of this cafe). I really enjoyed this place. As others have said, the food is not exceptional but it is pleasant. The staff and the atmosphere, however, were fantastic. I got a jamón iberico sandwich and a chocolate filled donut as well as a cappuccino. Due to the proximity to the train station, many other patrons seemed to be travelers grabbing a quick bite before moving on. However, there were plenty of people working and talking with friends as well. Definitely stop in if you are looking for something a little out of the way. I was there around 9:30a and the place was only half full. I am glad I went here as opposed to many of the fuller cafes I walked past. read more

You can't miss the Vertical Caffè towards the south end of the Paseo del Prado. It's right next to a four story tall vertical garden. So as you sip at your coffee, you can try and figure out how they could possible take care of a garden that grows along the side of a building. Great coffee and they have free wifi, but no power outlets that I was able to spot. The "Croissant Mixto" was tasty. read more

Given its proximity to a major street and British Museum, I falsely assumed this spot would be touristy. This would usually deter me. However, the bright and easy signage inspired me to try this spot for breakfast and coffee. I'm so pleased I came in! This is not a tourist trap. The prices are fair for breakfast- ranging from 1.70€ to 4.50€- and lunch 3.50€-7.90€. They didn't have churros so I ordered coffee and a croissant. Delicious! The restaurant is akin to dining in a classy garden. The decor from seat covers, foliage on brick wall, wicker fans, and elegant blue light fixtures remind me of eating in a garden. There are two small bathrooms available to customers and free internet. The staff members are friendly and thankfully patient with my attempts at Spanish. They have ample seating with spaces to accommodate a small stroller and have a baby changing table in the bathrooms downstairs. Delicious breakfast, pastries and coffee along with a great ambiance. I ran into this place as I was walking back from the park to my Airbnb. They have a good menu for a small cafe. Breakfast, salad, sandwich, coffee, tea and dessert options. Oh and beer. Can't be mad at that. My first time I had their chicken Caesar salad. It was very good. Not too big and definitely not too small. I wasn't feeling that great and it was great for a bite to hold me over for a few hours. I also had a chamomile tea. You can't really mess that one up. But, I sat there and spent a couple of hours just relaxing. They had wifi which was a plus. I went back a few days later and had a chicken sandwich. Simple chicken with lettuce, tomato, mayo and mustard. It was good. Again, I hung out for a few hours reading a book and it was super relaxing. I later had a brownie to snack on. They served it warm with whip cream and some chocolate drizzle on top. It was delicious. The staff here is super friendly and great. They bring your food to you and check on you just enough not to bother you. I'll definitely go back before I leave Madrid. read more

We visited for lunch and I ordered a Chicken Royal sandwich which was sliced chicken, romaine lettuce and some other flavors I couldn't quite pinpoint. I split the sandwich so I ordered a pasta salad with tomatoes, fresh mozzarella and olives. The sandwich was great and filling, but the pasta salad lacked flavor - it either needed olive oil or balsamic vinegar. I finished my meal with a chai tea...which was horribly, horribly sweet. I could have halved it with coffee or even water! If you didn't look up and see it, you wouldn't know the Vertical Caffe was there, but I'm glad we stopped by. Cute, modern cafe in Madrid. I stumbled upon this place after my visit to the Museo del Prado. Sidenote: there is a gorgeous living wall across the street that you must check out. Me & my friends came in for an afternoon pick me up . I (of course) got an iced latte with "es-skinny" milk. The coffee was great and it felt very Americanized which was a nice change of pace from some of the Spaniards who were meanies to us :-( The best part about this place was the staff! The two girls who worked there (1 was from Valencia, the other from Honduras) were SO cute & nice!! They were so pleasant that we came back every day of our stay in Madrid. This is exactly the kind of coffee shop I love, and if you're anything like me you will love it too. There is plenty of comfortable seating and good free wifi if you want to stay a while and perhaps bring out your laptop and get some work done. It's quiet while still having the pleasant background noises of the baristas working. If there is a better type of white noise for concentrating on work, I don't know what it is. The cafe is decorated in a sort of vintage hipster way. The quality of coffee is excellent. There is also a small menu of pastries, sandwiches, and small dishes that manages to have a great deal of variety. We tried the jamón and smoked salmon sandwiches: both were excellent. The strüdel for dessert was also very good; not overly sweet and complimented the coffee well. The prices are also very reasonable, especially for the location. As a bonus, across the street is a beautiful vertical garden that stretches up an entire wall of a building. read more

FUN & RELAXED: We walked off the main road to find a place for lunch. We saw this restaurant one block up and noticed a good amount of patrons at 3pm. The place is clean and has a hip vibe to it. They offer many coffees, pastries, ice cream, salads, sandwiches and small portioned hot meals. The order is self service but they bring the food and drinks to your table. We had the paella which had small pieces of meat and fish and had more of an asian flavor than saffron but was still very flavorful and a good lunch portion. The sandwich of buffalo mozzarella, pesto and spring lettuce was on a half crusty roll and was fresh tasting. The house white wine was a mild dry and was pleasant with the lunch. I would highly recommend this place due to the fresh food and availability of seating when most restaurants don't accept patrons in the mid-afternoon. I would go back again! read more

I assumed that I would drink it slowly and my friends would want to leave before I finished it so I asked for a plastic cup. They informed me that would be an extra charge. That was definitely a big thing in the culture to serve all drinks in real mugs/glasses. It added to that relaxed vibe. I decided to just go with the regular glass and deal with it if we did want to leave before I was done. The latte ended up being the perfect size. It was very sweet, but I still enjoyed it. The coffee is strong and well prepared by the barista, who had a good sense of humor and a tolerance for my broken attempt at ordering in Spanish. The second time I came, my wife and I bought sandwiches to take with us on the train to Valencia. Hopefully those pan out well; I am sure they will. A little costly, but all comida para llevar is, regardless of your current country. Free water in a pitcher to the side of the counter, a rarity in Madrid.
