Clearly this cheap, plastic, made in China zipper was not going to cut it. Dropping off a few things at the tailor, I asked if they did heavy-duty zippers. No, they said, but they knew who did -- Sew Cleaners. And they were right, these people know their zippers! The lady who helped me explained that, contrary to what I thought, I did not want a metal zipper, and walked me through why a bigger, better plastic one was what I should get instead (apparently she's been doing this for 20 years, so she knows everything there is to know about coat zippers). For a whopping $35 and 2 weeks, that's what I got, and my coat is good as new and ready for the snow! Plus, they were super friendly, which I'm slowly getting used to around here. I did forget to bring cash, but a quick run to the ATM solved that, and I'll definitely remember next time.
