I have been doing volunteer work with this organization for several years because I see they do a tremendous job helping people in need. They have a very efficient system that runs mostly on volunteers, so any donation money they receive goes almost entirely to helping people with food insecurity. I'm thankful for the work they do, and thankful because they give me the opportunity to volunteer sometime of my time to this worthy cause. Volunteer spots are open to anybody who is 15 and older, but kids 12-14 can also volunteer if they come with an adult. Shifts run 5 days a week, morning and afternoon. Each shift takes 50 to 75 people, and you can sign up online. Some shifts fill up really fast because local companies also support this effort by sending groups of employees, but usually you can find open spots for individual volunteers. I have friends from church that are here on political asylum and both of them have Ph.D. in education but papers for work are slow on arriving. The husband is doing some work not related to his Ph.D. just to make the rent. My friend is still waiting on social security papers so she can work but meanwhile one goes hungry. I cleaned out my cupboards to help out for food for the week but knew I needed to seek more help for them. I should have given my credit card so they could go get groceries but I'm retired and on a budget. Since the pandemic most food pantries have dried up. I am so grateful for finding Feeding South Florida. It's by appointment that you can get food once a month. Basically, they can help with an application for Snap as well and they have a store where you get several bags of foods such as 4 cans of veggies,2 dry black beans, 2 rice, 1cereal,1 soup,1 cereal, 2frozen vegetables, 2 fresh frozen fruit, 1chicken drum package and this is to hold you over for the month. We are grateful for the help, they were also given a list of some other places that might be able to help them. I'm the faculty advisor for my school's Key Club, and we hosted a food drive this year. FSS made it so easy to plan and execute the drive. They sent us materials to promote it and were so helpful. Dropping the donations off was a breeze. I just needed to fill out a little paperwork, back my car in to a bay, and hand off the bags. They even weighed the food and estimated the amount of meals donated, so now I can share the info with my school and club members! They're doing great work, and I'm so happy to know over 100 meals were created from my students' donations. read more

Another successful Feeding South Florida saturday! Feeding South Florida is the largest food bank serving Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe counties. They ensure that families especially children and elders do not go to bed hungry. Tuesday's through Saturday's, they have sorting events where volunteers can come in and assist with inspecting, sorting and building boxes for delivery. They have two time-frames; 8:30am - 11:30am and 1:30pm - 4:30pm. Be sure to sign up early as only 100 people are allowed for each session. Ruth the volunteer coordinator is amazing. It is very apparent that this isn't just a job for her; it is a passion. I love seeing the number of volunteers that come from all over to assist. It shows that there are some good people out there. Usually it's businesses (like my group) that are simply just taking time out of their day to give back. If you have kids that are 12 and older and need community service hours for school, they are allowed to come as well. Sixteen and older can come on their own should the parents not want to come. Obviously 12-15, must be accompanied by an adult. They do offer one Saturday a month (I believe) where kids 6-11 can come and assist with sorting. The sorting events itself is a lot of fun! Especially if you are with the right group of people. They play music and provide water. Depending on the job that you choose, you just get to work. It's constant movement which I like. It does require some heavy lifting. At the end, we all gather in the orientation room and Ruth tells us how many pounds of food we assisted in sorting. Today we assisted in sorting over 37,000 pounds of food. It is a very rewarding feeling to know that just volunteering your time for 3 hours can help someone or family tremendously. I volunteered here with a group of alumni from Cornell University (where I went to school). I was so impressed with everything! The volunteering was organized from start to finish. We were in an area where we sorted all kinds of goods- dry goods, cans, bottles, candy, snacks etc. My 12 year old daughter and her friend helped out as well (you have to be at least 12 to volunteer). Another group was volunteering in the next area and music was blasting which was fabulous! Our time slot went so quickly! They had gloves for us to use as well as bottled water for us to drink. 39k --Our goal was to package up 25,000 lbs of food and we far surpassed it- 39,000! in a bit under 2 hours. This counts for 32,600 meals for those people in South Florida who need food! They have a 4 star rating on charity navigator which is amazing! I highly recommend volunteering here!! Came for mandatory community service. Not gonna lie... I was pretty peeved. Community service really isn't my thing unless if it involves petting animals or getting paid. It's extra annoying when it's mandatory. You schedule a time slot on their website. Soon after you get there you sit through a 15 minute orientation. At the end of the orientation they ask if anyone who has been there before would like to be a group leader. If everyone is a first timer they ask for volunteers. They fill you in on what to do. They have 2 or 3 different jobs available. One of them, the "sorting" job will get you pretty dirty. Don't wear nuttin fancy. The other job involves putting together the food packs. They supply medical gloves for either job but I'd bring a thicker set​ of gloves if I came again. You'll likely come across broken glass. I forget how long the time slots were but they were just long enough for you to be tired of canned goods by the end of the shift. 2hrs maybe? I still hate community service but this place is alright and they do some great things. I'd consider donating my time to them again but... You know... I'd still be grumpy about it. read more

My company selected Feeding South Florida for our Day of Service event. I didn't know what to expect as I was not familiar with the organization. The facility is a huge warehouse right of 95 and Hallandale, we were introduced to their mission by a very passionate and lively staff member, she was excellent at giving us a quick summery of the organization and providing us with overall instructions of what we would be doing for the day. FSF collects unwanted food from all types of grocery chains, farmers markets, and any other place that throws away expired, damaged or unwanted food. FSF picks up all this food and takes it back to this warehouse where the food and other random donations are sorted. They explained to us that although the food containers have an expiration date the food is actually safe for consumption for a bit longer depending on what it is, they gave us instructions and there are large charts in the sorting area for reference. It is amazing how much food is still good and safe yet it is considered bad or if the outside packaging is damaged it is no good for the store, which actually turns out to be good for FSF since they collect, sort and donate this food to families in need. It was truly a wakening call to see how much waste we have, and I am so glad for organizations like FSF who save this food and other goods to donate to those in need. If you are ever looking to volunteer, or need community service hours for school please consider FSF, this is a wonderful organization who really cares about people who need help. They actually make it a fun experience paying loud music and making sure everyone is involved. I was very proud of my company for our day of service, in a few hours we sorted 49K pounds of food which will provide 109K meals to people in need. So as they told us, every bit helps, they are a non-profit organization and they rely heavily on volunteers. read more

It's quite a bleak picture: According to a United Way study, in addition to the 15 percent of households below the federal poverty level in Florida, 30 percent make less than a survival budget. It's even worse when you examine South Florida, with 50 percent of families in Miami-Dade on the edge of financial disaster, 47 percent in Broward, and 48 percent in Monroe. Palm Beach is slightly better, with 41 percent struggling. It seems the "I am just a paycheck away from homelessness" saying is not an empty, baseless comment coming out of people's mouths, after all. Although a lot of people are aware of the fact that poverty is a reality in our country, many will quietly lament this fact, while doing nothing. This is why poverty is rampant: decrying homelessness and the fact many people have nothing to eat will do nothing to alleviate the issue. It's time to put your money where your mouth is. If everyone would walk the walk instead of just doing talking, things would be very different. How do I know? Well, I decided to do something and volunteered twice at Feeding South Florida. In just a matter of a few hours, I was surprised by the amount of families helped: the first time, about 11,000 families, and the second time, about 23,000 families. Considering you're only there for 3 hours, it's amazing how much can be accomplished in such a short time. The concept is simple: items are brought in large warehouse-style boxes, and there are three groups of people that will then take care of these items: the inspection group, the sorting group, and the boxing group. The inspectors will browse through the items and determine whether they're edible items or not. Non-edible items are separated and put in banana boxes (dog food, soap, children's jewelry, etc.). Edible items are put into smaller boxes and put on a conveyor belt, where the sorting group will go through the boxes and sort them. They remove items from the banana boxes, sort and classify them, and put them in giant boxes. The giant boxes are labeled "canned goods", "canned protein", "snacks", "liquids and drinks", etc. Once those boxes are full, they are taken to another area where the boxing group will take banana boxes and fill them with a variety of items of each category. For example, if you're filling the boxes with canned foods, you want to make sure you have a variety, like corn, tomato sauce, alfredo sauce, yams, peas, etc. Each box has to weigh whatever that specific category's weight states (this depends on items -- for example the candy boxes won't have as heavy a weight as canned foods), and once you meet the appropriate weight for that category, you carry your box and put it on the pallet appropriate for that category, where the boxes will be distributed to needy families. This is a great place to bring friends, come alone, or bring your high school kid who may need community service. Although a good amount of the people were volunteering for school, a lot of the people were there just for the sake of doing something about South Florida's poverty problem. They play music on loud speakers to make the sorting job more enjoyable, but you're welcome to bring your own phone and headphones, if you want. I sorted on the conveyor belt once, and the other time, I boxed the items, though that may be difficult for some people who cannot lift heavy boxes (each box will weigh an average of about 32-35 lbs., so if this is an issue, you can request to do any of the other sorting jobs). Once your shift is over (either a morning shift of 8:30-11:30, or an afternoon shift of 1:30-4:30), you will go into the volunteer room, where the coordinator, Sybil, will thank everyone and announce the group's progress, and how many families will be fed. I can guarantee that hearing about the amount of people you helped by showing up and sorting will put a huge smile on your face, and give you a sense of fulfillment. It's so addicting that I came back the following week. I have made this a goal of mine, that whenever I have some free time on a Saturday, I will come and volunteer, even if it's out in Broward County. I challenge all of you sitting at home on a Saturday and being a couch potato to get in your car, come out to FSF, and do something for your community. Considering that many kids have no meals once school is out for the summer, because they're on their school's meal plan, you can bet that any help you can provide is extremely necessary, and will be much appreciated by these families. read more

On Saturday, Jan. 31st, will mark the 3rd time I have volunteered for this worthy organization. The past two times I went with a group of 20 and 10 respectively. Each time was a great time! Awesome opportunity to bond with friends and unite for a great cause! This is my 24th review on Yelp and my first 5 stars! Sybil, the volunteer coordinator, does a wonderful job making it all happen. There are two shifts Monday-Saturday from 830am-1130am and 130pm-430pm. They are closed on Sundays. Before every shift, there is a brief orientation explaining what you will be doing. In their warehouse, cans are sorted and packaged. Not hard work but definitely worth while! Minimum age requirement to volunteer is 12 years old. Feeding South Florida splits you into groups after the orientation. It's very simple and all you have to do is show up.
