After having had quite a bit of wind damage to our fence over the winter and then again in the…read morespring, I was really looking forward to getting our fence replaced. We used Yelp to request quotes from various companies and met with a few contractors. MCZ fell right in the middle as far as price and the guy who came to quote on the job seemed nice enough. We originally wanted to go with a butted-board designed but he went through the pros and cons and suggested a full privacy design instead. I'm glad he did because I much prefer it. We went over the details and mentioned our concerns. We had three requests: First, we are on a corner lot so we wanted the framing to face the inside of our garden and the nice 'finished' side facing the street. Second, most of the posts in our old fence had rotten where the wood met the ground so we wanted to ensure the cement for the new posts would come at least an inch or two above ground. Lastly, we requested that our fence boards be 2" off the ground, again, to help prevent the boards from rotting. Everything was understood and confirmed that it would be done. All we had to do now was make a deposit of 35% and we would be put in the queue. I made my deposit on April 26 and was told the ETA was May 9. It was nice to know that in a couple of weeks our fence would be replaced and our property would finally be enclosed and secure again. On May 6 I messaged MCZ to make sure we were still on for the 9th and received a response saying that they were still waiting on the locates. On May 9, a guy came to do the locates... but he had been giving the wrong address and ended up at the house two doors down. When he was told he was at the wrong house he left. I brought it to MCZ's attention and they said they would look into it. On May 13, I followed up again. On May 19, they responded saying that they were still waiting on the locates. On May 29, I emailed and asked for a realistic ETA. A couple days later they responded saying the locates had been resubmitted and that they would follow up with them that day. On June 2, we called Ontario One Call ourselves and was advised that they had been waiting for MCZ to respond to them. We advised MCZ and the next day, someone was at our house doing the locates. Another two and a half weeks go by and still no word. On June 20, I emailed MCZ to request a firm ETA. On June 21, another person arrived at our home to check on the locates that had already been done. On June 28, two months after we made our deposit, still no fence or even a start date insight. My husband called to see if he could get any further. They claimed to not know who he was or when our fence would be done. Shortly after the phone call, I received an email saying that they 'hoped' to be here on July 7. I expressed that if it was not started by July 7 then I would require my deposit back and I would need to move with a more reliable company. They were at our house early morning on July 7 and finished (with a couple of hiccups) on July 10. None of what we asked for was done. As much as we went over the fact that I wanted the framing on the inside and the 'finished' look facing the street, it was put on backwards. We pointed it out to him when he began to construct the fence and needless to say, I was not impressed with the attitude we got. He continued doing it the way he wanted and much to my disappointment, the framing is facing the street. Our request to have the cement for the posts to come above ground was completely ignored. In fact, the cement in some of the post holes barely fill the hole at all, leaving a good foot of dirt to fill in the rest. Absolutely not what we wanted. The fence does not coincide with the grading of our lot leaving areas of our fence with the boards resting directly on the ground and other areas so high off the ground that we've had to use edging stones to block the gaps so animals can't just stroll into our garden. Since the fence was completed, we've had to replace numerous boards, some due to extensive warping and some because the boards were in such poor shape and so discoloured, they didn't match the rest of the fence. I feel that they came with a poor attitude and rushed the job. We had a horrible experience with this company. I don't recommend them nor would I ever use them again.
