Moved to Silver Spring and across the street from Fenwick a year ago. It's my go-to beer store based on location, friendliness of the staff, and layout of the store. A wonderful selection of craft and micro brews, wine and sake; I always leave with a sixer of something I've never tried before. However, the big negative is the price of everything. $15 for a six pack of Lagunitas, for example. I understand using a California-based brewery is a bad example, but not when it's a few bucks cheaper everywhere else. Having said this, all the above positive reasons are why I come back each time and will continue to do so. I just tell myself I'm paying a few extra bucks to support the mom & pop craft beer store over the trashy-looking liquor store down the street, cluttered with neon Bud Light and Coors Light signs. read more

The selection is as good as others are reporting, with much of their beer sold refrigerated. They are also very pet friendly and are happy to let you bring your dog into the store with you. The wine selection is also extensive, but the least expensive bottle available is in the $13 range. The least expensive beer will run ~$9 for a sixer and quickly escalates from there. The staff are all very friendly and from what I can tell are able to make good recommendations based on your preferences. As some other reviewers have pointed out, the prices couldn't really be much lower in the anti-alcohol land of Montgomery County. It's not the store's fault, it's the county government's fault. The store owner is very friendly and helpful, which you can't say about many beer/wine stores in the area. However, the lack of chilled beer -- even a single cold box with some of the best-sellers -- is the reason I didn't give five stars. This place is amazing. Great selection of beer, the best I've seen in the area. I can always find a good porter or stout here (which are my go to beers). They also have some rare beers every once in awhile, but those usually run out right away. If you want to know what they have in their selection, you can try calling in but just be warned that they have given me misleading information. When I had called about whether they would be selling the Bourbon County Stout in Black Friday, they told me they would be. But they ended up releasing it four days early... even though I had checked in with them just the day before they released it. read more

Wow, I really have to disagree with a below reviewer who recommends heading to Whole Foods over Fenwick to get your beer. Although the prices (for standard finds) may, indeed, be higher here than what you can find in a local grocery store, the selection of craft brews available at Fenwick is far better than anything else I have found in and around the Silver Spring area to date. My wife and I just discovered this little beer shop and love it. They carry Avery and Oskar Blues from Colorado, for God's sake. Those brews may well be available at specialty beer stores elsewhere, but they are sure hard to find in Silver Spring. I am willing to pay a little extra to find my favorite Colorado craft brews close to home here in DC. Keep it coming, Fenwick! read more

Fenwick is great! They carry almost exclusively craft beer and wine so if you're looking for something you've never tried before, you'll find it here every time. Recently, they've added a refrigerated section to grab beer for immediate consumption. Be sure not to miss it, it's in a small house on second ave close to spring street. It's run by a couple who are always very helpful and friendly. The only downsides are that since the selection is rotating, they don't always have exactly what you're looking for. But if you're open minded you can find something else interesting and unique. The other negative is that the prices can be higher than competitors. Some beers are the same as anywhere else (you can get a shock top for around $10) but others are significantly more (lagunitas is $14-$17). The owner said they have a lot of trouble getting around MoCo's liquor laws so I suspect this may have something to do with it. Bottom line: if you want something unique and fun, go here and explore. Don't come here to buy bud light. read more

Yes, it may be a dollar more than the county owned store, but the service and supporting local business make it more than worth it. I hate to be a downer with only 2 stars, but here goes... First off, the owner is very nice and great to talk to. The beer selection is the best in Silver Spring, without a doubt. The negatives... The prices are incredibly high. For example, there is a Weyerbacher Double Simcoe bottle for $9.99 (i think). This same exact bottle is available for $5.99 at a store not too far away. 6 packs of Sierra Bigfoot were somewhere in the neighborhood of about $16.99-$17.99. The very same six pack is available at other places close by for about $5 cheaper. Also, no cold beer. I wish this place had more competitive prices and cold beer. If so, I'd shop here all the time, and give it 4 stars. Until the prices are more in line with other craft beer stores in the area, I will continue to go elsewhere. read more

The place is over priced and the staff is totally unprofessional. Let me explain! I moved to Silver Spring a while ago and for the first year that was one of my go to places for craft beer. Their selection was great and the owners seemed nice. I requested they call me or email when a beer I wanted came in. I even registered on their email list. I came back a month later, the owner who promised to call me- after all that what you do to good customers, call- said he'd sold out. Upset, I left and decided that the money I spent their was not valued. I still went to the store, but to window shop for beer I could get elsewhere. After all, why not do my homework since Fenwicks is so close to my apartment. One day, I was walking. It was a rainy Sunday after noon. The owner met me at the door and basically told me to buy something or get out. Further suggesting that I never buy anything from there. False, I bought a shit ton but after he ignored my request on both fronts- email and phone. I took it that he did not care for my business. He suggested that I was loitering. False, the technical definition of loitering is wandering about aimlessly (i.e. without purpose), my purpose there was to do homework for beers I could buy elsewhere. I went back to my apartment that day and called to yell at the management there. The manager said that she was not responsible for what the owner said and I said you represent the owner insofar as you work there. You may not have said that stuff to me, but you represent Fenwick. All I got to say, is this place sucks. There are many other stores in the area that care about their customers some even have delivery service. read more

Really like this place. We had the most difficult time finding a great red for our wedding, and the owner suggested Blue Reef. We loved it, and still like to buy it by the case. Very nice owner. Quick update. One mark of a good beer store is if they acknowledge that beer sold in bottles degrades for any number of reasons, including exposure to sunlight, changes in temperature, age, and other such types of beer-abuse. When I purchased a "bad" sixpack at Fenwick (Evo Porter) and brought it back after one beer made it obvious that it was well past its prime, they were more than happy to exchange it without a second thought. That's great! I exchanged it for a six-pack of a different style of Evo beer, brought it home... and it was bad as well. That was a bummer! I wouldn't assert that the consecutive bad sixers were in any way Fenwick's fault, but one becomes concerned with the distribution chain at some point with problems like that. The best beer and wine store in the DMV! I love their enthusiasm and the weekly "happy hour" beer and wine tastings. They are super-awesome at making each customer feel special. One time, they had a limited supply of a special release of Game of Thrones beer and they held a case aside for me when I emailed them asking about it. Now that they have expanded the store, they also have cold beer. When I have the time to travel down to Silver Spring, this is the place to get beer and wine! read more

My husband and I were looking for a very specific cider and although they didn't have it, the owner knew exactly what we were asking for and said they typically carry it but in small quantities, so they sell out fast. There is this one lady that works there that has just really thrown off my experience of Fenwick Beer & Wine. I dont know a lot about wine, but being from Germany, I have some intrinsic knowledge, like mulled wine tends to be red. Well, I walked in and asked the lady what the best mulling wine is and she points at these prepared super-sweet "honey" wines with mulling packets attached. I said, "no, I want a wine FOR mulling, I have all of the ingredients" and she said she's never heard of that and never heard of red wine being mulled...so I had to tell her the internet recommended a cheap, dry red. She was a little confused and just pointed to the middle aisle with sales...I went in a different time and asked her if they sell "Middle Sister" and she goes and looks around and says. "No." I just looked on their website and it says if they don't have a brand, they will order it. Why didn't she offer THAT? Definitely disappointed in her service. Otherwise, the variety and unique quality of wines is good. It's pretty organized as well. *UPDATE* Just called the store and the first thing the dude says is "we open at 10" and I said "well okay, but what time will you be open 'till since we are expecting a snowstorm" and his answer was "I dont know, whatever time I want to close!" Which wasn't super helpful to a customer who would be traveling to get there. Not a professional phone call at all. Disappointed in the customer service there! read more

You will not find a better beer and wine shop ANYWHERE in the DC area... The craft beer selection is unbeatable and if you place a custom order it arrives quickly - lightning quick. The wine selection is just as good. You'll find anything from quality $11 bottles to exquisite choices. But the best part? The staff's knowledge. The older gentleman that runs the place can answer even the most detailed question about any of their offerings. He is always eager to help. The Friday tastings are a great way to explore things you might not normally buy. They're fun, too! As for pricing, I'm impressed. The level of service combined with the selection makes me say their pricing is excellent. The price for a 6-pack of craft beer is usually $1-2 cheaper than all their competitors and that extends similarly to their wine. There's a reason Fenwick Beer and Wine has received so many awards. The CRAFT beer prices are higher bc it is Montgomery County and all distribution goes through the county. When a store like Fenwick wants a craft beer, they must order it through the county which adds a 20-25% surcharge for beer not within their network distribution. Most craft beer is not with the county's network. When I moved here from Balt City I was surprised to see everything a few bucks higher, now I know why. Check the DOB dates though, like most craft beer stores, there are some oldies, like 2014 old. read more

An interesting selection, but prices are absurdly high. And when we checked out, the price charged was higher than the sign stated. We were told, "Oh, that price is for another beer by the same brewer." But the sign was for "Flying Dog beer" and the sign did not identify specific varieties.
