The Untersberg massif, which spans approximately 70 km², is located right on the border with Bavaria. The Untersberg cable car starts in St. Leonhard near Grödig and leads to the Geiereck, from where we enjoyed breathtaking panoramic views of the Alps and the Salzburg valley area....we loved the views, the fresh air and the whole cable car/gondola experience. Many people go hiking right off the station at the top. We did not, but we can see how others would enjoy the trails during any of the four seasons of the year. It is included in the Salzburg Card if you have one.

Finally I realized it was the Predigtstuhlbahn in Bad Reichenhall, Germany and excitedly added it our itinerary! At €23 roundtrip for adults, it's fairly expensive, but the views are breathtaking. My friend and I arrived at 10:00 a.m. on a Saturday and waited a reasonable 30 minutes to ascend. When we descended a couple hours later, there was no line at all. One tip: if you're staying in Salzburg like we were, please be aware that you can take the 180 Postbus to Bad Reichenhall. As an American, I was a little dumbfounded by the idea of being able to take a public bus to a different country, but it's true and very helpful if you're traveling without a car!

You'll need to scan it each time for entry. It's a 15 minute ride each way by cable car to Katrin. The cable car seats 4 at a time. There's a platform with great views at the top and restaurant. If you hike down the platform, you'll see the information cabin. Restrooms are at the bottom and top. It's 1400 meters above sea level, with panoramic view of Salzkammergut. Which is an Austrian region of lakes and alpine on the northern edge of the Alps. We got lucky with the weather while we were at the top. Once we began to descend, it started raining. Make sure you check the forecast and webcams before you go. There's not much to do up here but to admire the views and breathe the great open air.

Nach langen Verhandlungen wurde der Bau einer neuen Bahn durchgesetzt. Die Eröffnung fand im Jahr 1979 statt. Die Anlage war damals eine moderne 4er-Kabinenbahn der Firma Girak. Zum ersten Mal wurde in Österreich bei einer Einseilumlaufbahn eine Seilneigung von 100% erreicht. 2010 wurde der Skifahrerbetrieb eingestellt. Seitdem ist die Katrin-Seilbahn für Fußgänger in Betrieb. Besucher genießen die Aussicht auf Bad Ischl, Wolfgangsee und Hallstättersee und auf das imposante Panorama der Salzkammergutberge mit dem Dachsteinmassiv. The tour had a great balance of being on and off the bus, particularly for such a rainy country (it rained for much of our tour, but surprisingly it was still quite enjoyable so I can only imagine how much nicer it would be on a clear, sunny day). It also seems doable for people who may not be up for walking long long distances. I was on the tour with two individuals (my mom and a friend) who would not necessarily call themselves Sound of Music fans and they loved the tour as well, particularly getting out to the lake regions. Lastly, normally I would scoff at a large bus tour, but in this case it's more fun with a large groups. The energy is great and enhances the experience. So long, farewell! Ps. I almost went with another tour company allegedly recommended by Rick Steves. The reviews didn't support his recommendation. I'm glad I went with Panorama.

these guys know how to operate dem cables, man! from the…read morevintage gondolas to the ultramodern 20-seat on-demand cabins across a 2km valley, this is a top notch lift operator. wifi is provided for free at a few of the lifts (albeit with an annoying login process required every time), their maps are very clear and accurate, the online lift status is swiss-like... with the exception of one single lift, there was no wait at all during my weeklong ski vacation, an incredible feat in the world's #1 ski resort. Their foray into the world of online app geotracking, automated picture taking and crowdsourced competion needs a little more work (compared to say Epic's colorado resorts install) but works decently, just needs more coverage and timed race courses.
