Leave extra time to sort out the parking (you can buy your parking display ticket at the gift shop, but you'll have to walk back to the car to put it on the dashboard). If you have coins, no problem, but the lot machine was very particular about the credit cards and the app was useless. Skip the gift shop and buffet.

If the tracks go over the water, is it a Rail-Ford?…read more This is an amazing private railway that climbs through the beautiful part of the mid Wales coast on the mountainous hills, and has existed since 1865, although it originally was just carrying materials to the quarry from the quarries. It was actually the first narrow gauge railway in the UK, and the first one to carry passengers. Now it's a tourist attraction and is absolutely beautiful. It hasn't been maintained very well, but that just makes it seem like something really old school, and one station in particular along this route is so gorgeous that I at least need to give the whole railway five stars.

The railway has a core staff that keep it ticking over, but the majority of the work is done by volunteers, a very socialable group of people. The Victoria Dock in Caernarfon is North Wales answer to London's Docklands. The council owned…read moremarina has been the centre of a great deal of regeneration over the last couple of years. There are now luxury apartments, hotels, shops and restaurants surrounding the dock itself. The marina is located on the Menai Strait just outside the town centre and is home to a number of expensive looking boats and yachts. There is a boatyard for repairs and a shop selling sailing equipment. It's a nice place for a lunchtime stroll if you're after a bit of peace and quiet.

TL;DR - A trip inside an engineering project bigger than you can imagine…read more Ever heard of Electric Mountain? We hadn't and were a bit shocked when we found out about the place... this is a British engineering project on a scale you wouldn't believe. Long story short - the UK needed to be able to adjust electricity generation at short notice (like when we all put the kettle on after the Great British Bake Off) so we built this. There are two lakes, one at the top of the mountain and another at the bottom. When we need electricity, they open the taps and water pours from the top lake into the bottom, generating electricity as it goes. When there's no demand for electricity, they pump the water back up to the top lake. The entire power station is built inside the mountain! There's a visitor centre, shop and cafe here but the real excitement is the tour. You can pay on the day but it's advisable to book in advance. The tour lasts just over an hour... you see a film about the power station first and then board a bus which drives over to the mountain and then drives down inside it... yes, there are kilometres and kilometres of roads here UNDERGROUND! The scale of the place is immense... the turbine hall is so large that it could comfortably contain St Paul's Cathedral, and the whole cave and tunnel system is man made. Apparently it's the largest engineering project ever undertaken in the UK, and remains the fastest responding power station in the world. Our tour guide, Wyn, was fantastic. He did a great job of striking a balance between seriousness and humour, and keeping everything at a level which kids and adults would both enjoy and learn from. A few key points to note. Cameras and mobile phones are not allowed - you'll need to put them in a locker before boarding the bus. The lockers need a £1 coin, but it's refunded to you afterwards. Secondly, there are no toilets on the tour so make sure you go beforehand. From the exterior, you'd have no idea that there was a power station here, let alone such a huge one. This is such a magnificent engineering project that I feel like we should be shouting about it from the rooftops... the only reason I've not given it 5 stars is that I wanted more! I wanted to explore every inch of the place! And the rules on cameras mean I can't show you any photos!

The Electric Mountain is one of the best attractions in Llanberis and well worth a look, if only…read morebecause it's just so different to anything else in the area. The entrance to the Electric Mountain is in Llanberis, in front of the entrance to Park Padarn, so before you even embark on the trip the scenery is wonderful, all year round. The trip takes you by bus into the inside of Eledris mountain to the Dinorwig power station to see the workings of the electic mountain. As you travel on the bus you see the various pumps working to produce electricity, and then there's a stop inside to watch a film. The tour itself is a little boring but interesting nonetheless, and a one-off experience. Sadly, photographs aren't allowed to be taken, and you're not allowed to carry anything in with you, including handbags.

The exhibition was informative too. The only negative was that the OS maps etc were priced at about £14 while in Craft Cymru they were £7 or £8 - depending on what type you want.

This place ticks all the usual tourist information centre boxes (a forests worth of trees and a…read moresmall museum thing nestling amongst some roadmaps and souveniers) but whats nice about this place is it's got a free little cinema type place that shows a film of a man in a helicopter taking off from just outside where you sit and flying over the snowdonia mountains. The screen is so large and the place so small that it almost gives the impression you're in the helicopter (just not as loud lol) This is also where you'll find a ceramics studio and also where the police are when they're in the village.

Llanfair is kinda Unfair if you ask me. Unfairly stacked against much more amazing railway stations…read morearound North Wales. This is a tiny little station with a tiny little bridge 50 miles west of Chester in the UK. It's on the line from Crewe to Holyhead, so it gets a lot of trains coming through here, although a lot of them don't stop. They only have a little stone shelter on each side of the track, and it's only a request stop. There's no tickets whatsoever here. You have to buy it from the person on the train, or you have to buy it before you travel. There used to be beautiful little buildings right here along the tracks but not so much anymore.

Very friendly owners good family campsite shop on site with all the bits you need also gas…read moreavailable. Its within walking distance of llanrug which has a shop post office and a pub. The showers and toilet block are gleaming and there is a laundrette on site so ideal after a days walking on the hills. There is campervan/ caravan waste water and chemical waste disposal/ refill. This site is an ideal pass through site or stay for a few days to get most out of snowdonia.

Not to be confused with Unfair PG Railway Station which is named after a very child-friendly movie…read morethat was unfairly given a PG rating. This is a cute little railway station on the North Wales Coast Line, right along the track from London to Holyhead (which is basically London to Dublin if you think about it). It was closed down for five years in the 60s because of a horrible fire, but it's back now. It has platforms on both sides and a lovely old white and brown brick house that reminds me of a pub on the main platform. It also has a cute signal box as well. It's definitely a very pretty town, and one of my favourite things about its station it is this famous sign which has the full name of the city, a very very long name, the longest on record I think, and for this sign alone it has to get 5 stars, as it's one of the most famous tourist attractions in Wales.

Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, or Llanfair P.G. as it is more easily…read moreknown (and said), is famous for having the longest place name in the UK. It also holds the record for the railway station with the longest name in the world, and its web-site now holds the record for the longest valid url on the web, with the name of the upper village (see below). The translation into English is: "Saint Mary's Church in the hollow of the white hazel near a rapid whirlpool and the Church of St. Tysilio of the red cave". The village was probably only known as Llanfairpwll until the 1800s, although some references include the longer Llanfairpwllgwyngyll. However, according to local legend, either a local tailor or the local Vicar decided that lengthening the name would be a good marketing ploy for tourism, tapping into the newly burgeoning tourist trade for visiting the Snowdonia area. And so the longer version came about. A crazy idea, but boy, has it worked. The railway station, opened in 1848, adopted the longer version on its name-boards, although timetables and destination boards have always shown 'LlanfairPG'. I was taken to the station as a child, and bought a platform ticket with the name spelled out in full (which I still have, of course). The station is now a James Pringle Weavers woollen shop, and this has become the main stopping point for tourists in the village. There is a wide range of tourist momentos, of course, including the inevitable T-shirts and mugs. The web-site has a wonderful facility to teach you how to say the word, breaking down the Welsh vowel and consonant sounds into easy chunks, and you can hear it spoken, too. Apparently - and this is new to me - the upper village has the name, "Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogochuchaf", the suffix '-uchaf' being Welsh for upper. But, in my view, that's being silly. Does this also qualify as the longest place name on Qype?
