Our 5 year old had her Wonder Woman Martial Arts birthday party at Field Martial Arts! IT WAS SUPER!! The program, the facility, and especially the staff exceeded our expectations in every way. When planning our event, Master Field was flexible and supportive and offered to do practically everything. Every time we told him a piece of prep we were doing he would say, "Oh, we'll do that for you." They blew up balloons, unloaded our car, set the table, ordered and served the pizza, greeted our guests, cut and served the cake, cleaned up... more things on this list. All with a smile - so gracious. The facility is spacious, clean and well-equipped. We had 26 kids and 40 adults and there is space for everyone to sit and watch. There is a sitting room with soft seating, a large party table area, an enormous mat area and a whole wall of mirrors. The program is better than any activities I've seen at a kids' birthday party. They keep the kids active every moment of the party with exciting and engaging games and activities that challenge and thrill the kids. The favorites were Ninja-Ninja-Turtle (duck-duck-goose) and Sneaky Ninja! Even the really little ones (2 yr olds) got into the action and had fun. One of the things that make the party such a success is that they staff it very well with enough people to handle all the guests and all of them are energetic and engaging and poised to help with absolutely everything. The icing on the cake is that the birthday girl (Wonder Woman) got to cut the cake with a real sword (under the expert guidance of Master Lewis). Now that's a super hero treat. This review is for kid's karate. Our son has been in the FMA program for a year and a half, starting in Little Dragons (4-7-year-olds) and graduating to the Basic Training (7-teenager). I've noticed a huge improvement in his ability to focus and his overall strength. When he started he couldn't do a single push-up, and now he can do 20+ at a time. Master Field (owner and 5th-degree black belt) teaches all of the classes, along with Master Lewis (5th-degree black belt) and Miss Danielle (Brown belt). They are all incredibly good with the kids. Every three months they have a belt ceremony where all of the karate kids and grown-ups get their new belt, and show off their stuff. This is so great for the kids, because they can see all the cool moves and weapons they will learn if they stick with it. This is such a strong overall program. It's just one of those great wholesome places that teaches so much more than just karate. Master Field teaches manners and encourages black belt focus and behavior at home and at school. This means being respectful, paying attention, and being a good person. Honestly, it's had an impact on me too. I'm 40, and I now call other men "sir" instead of "man" or whatever else. I love having my son in karate. He tried other sports but quickly lost interest. Karate teaches so much more than traditional sports - it's year-round, long term, and no one sits on the bench. I'll also say this: in the era of "everyone gets a trophy" one of the reasons we chose this school is because I'd heard that not everyone advances. If you don't know your stuff, you don't pass. And it's true - there's heartbreak and let downs every month when some kids don't pass their test. But, they also don't give up and drop out, and they become tougher kids because of it. That's the kind of experience I want my son to have, because that's what life is like. It's not for me, but I dare you to find a team of staff more dedicated in helping you achieve your personal fitness goals. FMAA offers karate classes for kids as young as 4 years old, in their Little Dragons program and advance up to the Big Dragons, and the Black Belt Training for the more advanced older groups. For adults, the kickboxing is the main offering with a growing popularity in Krav Maga. Adult kickboxing and Krav are for all fitness levels and you go at your own pace. Master Field and Master Lewis knows just when to give you the extra push when needed. Again, it's not for me, but I see the changes and progress in both our kids (ages 5 and 9) as they advance up through the ranks and earn their stripes. FMAA gave them the outlet, challenges, and reward of learning something difficult which hopefully, they'll take with them off the mat. I see so many parents with kids with little or no respect for their community or others--I personally refuse to raise little @ssholes and will gladly invest the time now to guide them along. I have come a long way in my fitness journey, and Field Martial Arts Academy is an essential part of it. I started with the I Love Kickboxing program in June 2013 when FMAA was still in the Sharon location, and followed them to the current Norwood location. The kickboxing classes were divided into 2 halves: first round is conditioning - upper body, lower body, total body, cardio, you name it. Second round you go on the bags either with a partner or by yourself and practice combos of punches and kicks. Derek Field and his team of instructors makes the hour fly by with different exercises each class, you will never go to the same class twice! Recently, hubby and I joined the adult martial arts program. My first impression was "this makes kickboxing feels like a warm-up". The group of adult martial artists are the most hard-working, friendliest, realest and coolest group of people I have ever met. Mr. Field and Mr. Lewis push and motivate their students out of their comfort zone and I have greatly benefited from this. I am in the best shape of my life right now - I am now able to run much faster and for longer periods of time and can do more push-ups before going onto my knees. Even with an injury, Mr. Field and Mr. Lewis were able to modify the cirriculum so that I do not have to miss any part of the class. After 3 months of martial arts classes, I have built muscles and lost at least a dress size. I have never felt so good about myself and I look forward to going to class all the time! The best workout is the early early workout that starts at 5:45am. They have plenty of classes at all convenient times of the day - before work /school, lunch, and after work.
