The Nippon Club is located on West 57th Street between Sixth and Seventh Avenues. The receptionist sent me up to the seventh floor in a high tech elevator where no buttons are pressed. Two exhibits were going on side by side. I found the cloisonné vases and boxes beautiful. A tapestry of two leopards was my favorite and listed for $20,000. Everything was for sale and if I had oodles of money I would have picked up one or two piece. Several of the objects were from the Meiji period (1872-1912) and Shöwa period (1926-1989). A large bowl and a box of an exquisite blue was breathtaking. Going back to street level one presses the X button in the elevator. If you're reading this review because you're thinking of attending an upcoming performance, and you're on the fence about it, then I hope that this review will persuade you to get off of the fence and into a seat at Carnegie Hall! Trust me, it's so worth it. Most recently, I participated in a wonderful event at Zankel Hall. It was called "The Divine Art of Music," and it was fabulous. It featured much of the best of both "Western" and "Eastern" music; I can confidently assert that it uplifted many souls that evening. Zankel Hall itself, which seats about 600 people, had such an intimate and fresh feeling to it...highly recommend it! The ushers were all focused, kind, attentive and friendly, which also contributed to a positive and memorable experience for everyone in attendance. IMHO, Carnegie Hall is a foretaste of heaven, which makes heaven all the more attractive. : ) In conclusion, it's truly one of those awe-inspiring gems on this side of the veil, so to speak, which brings us not only culture but a sense of God's goodness and loveliness to all who enter it. My recent NYC trip was made because of the NYC Ballet's $30 under 30 program. Our local friend had…read moretold us about it and I'm so glad to have learned about this amazing program. If you are 30 years old or younger, you are able to purchase tickets to the ballet for $30. You can register online ahead of time, but know that our IDs never seemed to get approved online, so we still had to go in person to purchase the tickets. You are able to only purchase two tickets under your name and you must have your ID with you for this program. We went for the Balanchine + Wheeldon show which was incredible. First of all, this theater is beyond beautiful. It was a really rainy night, but the beauty of this theater helped me forget how wet we were from the rain. You are able to take stairs or an elevator to your floor. The ushers were extremely kind and helpful. The seats themselves were pretty comfortable. I love how angled the seating was. As a shorter person, this can really obstruct my view, but the overly angled seating helped remedy this. The ballets themselves were incredible. Each one better than the next. It was such a magical night. I highly recommend visiting the this ballet.

The Art Students League will always have a special place in my heart. I can't speak to how they are…read morecurrently but I attended from 2015-2019 and made many friends here, and it was a great environment to create, whether I was learning wood sculpture or refining my vision as a painter. Most of the instructors were wonderful, offering guidance when I asked and space when I needed it. It is very reasonably priced and remains a true NYC institution. The only instructor I would caution against is Pat Lipsky. I found her conceited and negative, even spiteful at times. If your aesthetics do not align with Immanuel Kant or Clement Greenberg, you may not feel welcome in her class. After she asked me to help set up her studio for a visiting curator, I left the class. From that point on, she refused to acknowledge me when we crossed paths. Still, the overall experience was deeply meaningful. I am grateful for the time I spent here and the ways it shaped my work and friendships.

What a melodic way to honor John Coltrane's Centennial by celebrating 100 years of the legendary…read moresaxophonist & composer's life. I've loved all things Coltrane for as long as I can remember. His music was the soundtrack of my childhood & my introduction to jazz & the blues. So, while planning my return to NYC, I made sure to find a jazz club where I could experience his legacy. That led me to Dizzy's Club at Lincoln Center for A Masterful Tribute to Trane: Roxy Coss Quartet. I'll admit, I hesitated at the $60 cover & $20 minimum. Yet my server, Nidia, was amazingly engaging, & the seamless hospitality throughout, led by GM Raymond, was impressive. Most importantly, the extraordinary music made it worth every penny. The John Coltrane Centennial Celebration was nothing short of transcendent. Honoring Coltrane's iconic "Classic Quartet" era, saxophonist Roxy Coss led a powerhouse ensemble featuring Geoffrey Keezer on piano, James Cammack on bass, & Rudy Royston on drums. Together, they balanced fierce modal intensity with profound spiritual depth. Keezer's captivating commentary connected the music to Coltrane's history & legacy, while the musicians brought that history vividly to life. I especially appreciated the reflection on Coltrane's composition Alabama, written in response to the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing. Artist Insights *Roxy Coss; Saxophones & Clarinet: Commanded the front line with muscular tenor solos & soaring soprano lines that captured Coltrane's questing spirit without merely imitating him. *Geoffrey Keezer; Piano: Followed his historical introductions with thunderous block chords & explosive modal runs. *James Cammack; Bass: The Ahmad Jamal Trio veteran anchored the ensemble with a deep, resonant pulse & commanding presence. & a gentle note: JC performs with a walker, yet his passion for playing remains unmistakably powerful. I love seeing that kind of dedication to the music. *Rudy Royston; Drums: Fueled the quartet with polyrhythmic fury & an exhilarating, Elvin Jones-inspired drive. The intimate space & ambience were supremely curated - pun intended: A Love Supreme. Great Jazz at the Lincoln Center & a salute to Artistic Director Wynton Marsalis for helping sustain this extraordinary jazz tradition. It was packed when I was there on a Sunday night, but it felt cozy rather than crowded. Be aware that there is a food and drink minimum included with your ticket. I wasn't in a drinking mood, so I enjoyed a mocktail and an appetizer, plus the cornbread to go. Buying tickets in advance is recommended. I got lucky that it wasn't full. They also run some discounts, like student tickets, so check online if that applies to you. Overall, I really enjoyed Dizzy's Club and would definitely come back.
