While malls die all over America, retail still thrives in Paris. Exhibit A: Galeries Lafayette Haussmann. I've been to this department store a number of times over the years, and I both enjoy it and fear how completely it can suck up precious vacation hours. It's a fantastic place to shop, with a ton of well curated inventory spread out across multiple floors in multiple buildings. The main building features that beautiful domed ceiling, which manages to catch me by surprise every time I walk in. I haven't had the opportunity to shop for my own clothes here in a long time, but I've gotten some really great stuff on the children's floor, and discovered the souvenir section on my last visit, where I picked up some cool Paris Metro toy trains and magnets. We did somehow get stuck at Galeries Lafayette for over two hours and ended up skipping Notre-Dame, which might have been a better place to spend our last afternoon in Paris. But it was sale season, and my kids look super cute in their heavily discounted Petit Bateau. Galeries Lafayette is busy and sometimes overwhelming, but it's a wonderful department store. I wish we had something like it back home. I'd much rather shop there than fall for targeted ads on Instagram.

It was perfect since Paris had record high temperatures and we could relax and lounge nearby here. The kids loved FAO Swartz and all the live demos, especially seeing the stuffies where we ended up caving and buying a few. Overall, this was a beautiful spot!

When was the last time you rang a bell besides an ominous black door to enter a boutique, then…read moretraveled through a long dark corridor with classical music playing in the background to be greeted by someone who offered you something to drink while you perused the shop's offering? Ummm, never. That's what I thought. And that's what makes this particular L'Eclaireur address one of the most unique and pleasant boutiques to visit in Paris, let alone the rest of the world. I rarely go to this shop because everything there is just too gorgeous and too expensive, but yesterday I was in the neighborhood and stopped by because I've been fantasizing recently over these adorable charms by an LA-based artist named Catherine Michaels that I knew l'Eclaireur carried. Of course the charm that I wanted was one of the pricier of the series, but I've been a very good girl lately and felt like I deserved it. The saleswomen helping were absolutely adorable despite their chic, sophisticated looks. They were so helpful, looking through catalogs to see what was in stock, getting out different strings for me to try my charms on with, marveling with me at how intricate and unique the designs were. It was such a pleasant pause from reality that the purchase happened almost in a blur. But every time I look down now at my fantastic charm necklace I'm thrown back to the experience and am so happy that I decided to ring that bell alongside that ominous door.

I had a great experience here, the sales associates can be a bit crusty but they've experienced a…read morelot of theft and now they are very weary of sketchy looking people so don't come in with your sunglasses down or anything. That said, I speak French so I was able to talk to the sales associates freely here and they were really helpful. All the big-time luxury designer labels are here; Jean-Paul Gaultier, Azzedine Alaia, Thierry Mugler, Vivienne Westwood, Antony Price, Claude Montana, Chanel, Hermes, Fendi, Dolce and Gabbana, Givenchy, Burberry, Celine, Balanciaga, Gianfranco Ferre, Versace, Paco Rabanne, Max Mara, Rick Owens, Helmut Lang and many, many others, and that's just the clothes. Shoes and purses also has an equally long list. The thing with vintage shopping and second-hand shopping , is that it is hit or miss. The secret to scoring a real find where you can check off right fit, right price, right item is dropping in often and since that's not possible for me, I really took my time to look through everything while I was here. I didn't find any tops, skirts or scarves that really tickled my fancy this time but when I went over across the street, to their outerwear store, I found a reversible wool/cashmere fall overcoat from Celine in fantastic condition, at a damn good price, I figured because it is reversible, it's basically two coats for the price of one. I'd have no hesitation whatsoever to come back here. Prices are not cheap but if you compare a Jean-Paul Gaultier coat straight off the runway (approx. 10 000 Euros), and here (approx. 900 Euros), you're still getting a deal.
