If you're at the UofA day to day you likely know all about this little secret in the basement of SUB, but if not, you should Check It Out! It's counter service but there is ample seating in a large open area. There is plenty of windows on the open south side and when the weather is good you can even eat outside on the patio! It's a Filipino place so you order the Chicken Adobo, and I did. Tender and well seasoned stewed chicken on the bone served over sticky steamed rice and coleslaw... so good! The coleslaw has raisins and a peanut dressing the rice gets soaked in the sauce from the chicken and I like to give mine a good stir before I eat so the flavours hit you all at once. The staff are friendly, the food quick and the flavours unique and palette popping! I recommend a little of the Chili flake oil as they are keeping the hot real low key for Canuck tongues. read more

I had lunch at the Grant MacEwan location and glad I came during the last week they were open. It was also nice to see there was no line up but as I was getting my food, there were some people that joined the line. I ordered the feature of the week; pulled pork asado rice bowl with slaw. The half size was served in a square take out container for $8 but there was lots of food. The pork was tender and the sauce gave it flavour but wasn't drenched in it. Some of the sauce soaked into the rice but I liked it that way. The coleslaw was delicious and light on the dressing and I really enjoyed the cranberries. If I worked closer, I would visit more frequently. But if I'm in the area, I will be back. read more

I can't say enough good things about Filistix. As a half-Filipino customer, it has a place very close to my heart. When the truck first opened a few years ago (stationed right outside the BMO on 100A Street), I became a frequent visitor. It started out very simply: green onion cakes, and a rice bowl with a meat skewer (your choice of chicken, pork or beef), as well as an asian-style slaw with slivered pecans and dried cranberries. Alternatively, you could get the slaw and your skewer on a sweet sticky-bun. The best part - you could also buy small cans of mango juice, which was something I hadn't seen around since I would visit my Lola's house when I was younger. When they moved out of that space and were waiting on a permanent location, it broke my heart. Their business and menu has certainly flourished since then. They are now stationed in the main quad on the University of Alberta campus, and just like it was downtown, the lineup is long, but so worth the wait. Their menu is now on a weekly rotation, with two main "meat" options (one of which is generally a rice bowl, sometimes both), and the other is a vegetarian option (that is still delicious, and would be enough to convert a meat-eater). The signature slaw is still included with each meal, and there is now the option of a half size ($7) or full size ($11) portion. "The Standard" is a chicken adobo, which is a Filipino chicken dish that could be made with either a soy sauce or coconut milk base, and served with rice. Filistix uses the soy base, which I find leaves less of an overwhelming aftertaste (my Lola was partial to the coconut milk version) while still giving a very distinct and robust flavor to the meat. I would also guess that they probably use a low-sodium soy sauce in their recipe, as it doesn't have the same bitterness that you would usually get when cooking with regular soy sauce. They have huge portions (I got a full sized box, despite seeing everyone else in line getting the half size), delicious and fresh food (which if I recall, is also as locally-sourced as possible), and is overall a much better meal than what you'd get at the Edo inside of the Student's Union building (and at a cheaper price). read more

Filistix was my first taste of Filipino food, and it was pretty good. I had "The Beef Eater" which was pretty tasty overall, but ultimately a little on the bland side. The slaw they served with it was delicious though. I usually hate coleslaw, but theirs is so so so good. I'm definitely going to try it again! read more

This is my favorite food on U of A campus. The taste is amazing. Almost everyday they change the menu but the concept is the same. The beef stew with rice is my all time favorite. 12$ (New price) for large is reasonable. The portion is huge and it is almost good for two. The best part of the food for me is the home made spicy salsa/sauce. I think it has cucumber and zucchini in it. Sometimes they run out of it which is very disappointing and even it may force me to buy my lunch somewhere else. The coleslaw with raisin is very tasty. You can actually taste the vegetables and everything is not masked by dressing. Overall, this place is highly recommended specially for a sunny day, it is the best option on U of A quad. I finally got my first taste of Filistix this past weekend at the Edmonton Folk Music Festival, as their food cart was conveniently located near one of the stages I was grooving at. My pulled beef bunwich was a burst of flavour for my mouth and eyes - a pile of lean beef garnished with pineapple salsa, cilantro, and hoisin sauce. It was certainly different than any beef sandwich I had ever had. My only "beef" was that at $8 it was a bit on the pricey side, but festival food is sometimes more expensive than on the downtown street. I would definitely like to try their food again. read more

Filistix is Edmonton's answer to something you can find all over the world: meat on a stick on the street. I first stumbled on Filistix at the downtown market early in the summer and it became a favorite stop whenever they were there. Their trailer would often be parked between 102nd Ave and 103rd Ave close to a lot of veggie stands. They grill chicken, pork and beef on sticks and pair it with coconut rice and a salad, or you can stick your meat on a sub type sandwich. It is absolutely delicious and fresh food, and has the added bonus of being 100% organic! They are usually located on Rice Howard Way Monday to Friday. Look for them at the downtown market in the summer and roaming the streets of Edmonton at various events. read more

Filistix was recently given a permanent place within the Robbins Health Learning Centre at Grant MacEwan in their downtown campus (within the cafeteria in building 9). I was so excited, as I'm currently a student there and the caf in that western building was really terrible before their arrival. Their menu is primarily curries and asian-fusion inspired dishes - Filipino food, to be exact, but with lots of different national influences. I have a few friends who are "afraid" to try their foods because they are so global and I guess to the average joe, maybe Filistix can be daunting. I don't know. I absolutely love all the spices and the amazing flavors that come with their meals. Their coleslaw has a bit of an asian flair to it - with almond slices and an amazing dressing instead of mayo-base. The jerk chicken is super flavorful and not too spicy. My only complaint is that lunch can be pricey at Filistix. It might be because it's cafeteria food and Aramark/MacEwan is making them hike their prices or whatnot, but it makes it difficult for your average student to eat there on a regular basis (around $12 for a full sized plate, a little less for a half sized portion). But still, it's really, really good. And I love that unlike their food truck, it's always there. They're open until 2PM on weekdays. Go and eat, even if you're not a student there. It's a great place for some gorgeous, fresh, flavorful food. read more

The chicken was lightly seasoned, juicy and moist, while the tangy soy, garlic and chilli sauce work well together without any single of these flavours dominating the dish.
