I was recently diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer and was referred to Dr. Sarayia by my therapist to reevaluate my antidepressant meds. At first Dr. Sarayia was responsive to the need to see me as soon as possible. His initial change in my meds worked extremely well. I felt the best that i had in the months following my diagnosis. When he went to make a further adjustment he gave me two options. At that point I trusted his judgement so I was secure in going with his recommendation. I told him that my only concern about a change was that my next oncology appointment was the following Tuesday and it was a particulary scary time for me. He chose to take me off the combination of meds that worked and put me on a higher dose of one of them. Our hope was that I would feel even better. He in turn assured me that if there was any problem that i was to text him and he would get back to me immediately. We had a good plan. The second day on the new regimen I was experiencing increased anxiety, fearful thoughts about dying, etc. So on the third day i texted him as planned that i was heading into a crisis. More than two hours went by as i continued to feel worse with no response from Dr. Sarayia. I called my therapist in a panic. She assured me that Dr. Sarayia was available as she herself had heard from him that day. When I finally got a text from him he simply said this: Looks like you did better on the lower dose. Huh? I was on two meds not one. What did the text mean? No further texts followed. What did he want me to do? Silence from him. My condition continuing to deteriorate and I was becoming more agitated. My therapist had to intervene and texted him to call me. After he received her text he did call and left this message: go back to the protocol you were on before. huh? His prescription for one of the drugs was different than the one he wanted me to return to. Where/how was I supposed to get a prescription? It was a Sunday and he was my psychiatrist. He never followed up after his voicemail. By then it was clear that this was callous medical mistreatment. I texted him to please take me off his schedule as i was no longer his patient. He texted back and i parapharase here: i had a right to seek any medical care from anyone i wanted, he was sorry that i didn't FEEL that his response was soon enough, in retropect he should have asked me to call instead of text, and that he wished me good luck in the future. I called a friend who was a psychiatrist and when she heard the protocol Dr. Sarayia put me on she was surprised and in her opinion it was far too agressive. She corrected the doses and wrote a new prescripton for me to fill. It took me 5 days to feel back to myself. I believe that I was both medically and emotionally mistreated by Dr. Sarayia-- a doctor who ironically splits his bill into medical and psychotherapy fees.

He takes his job very seriously and is focused on helping me feel less depressed and anxious. He is highly educated (graduated from Harvard!) and really knows his stuff. There are many psychiatrists today who are not up to date on today's current research like he is. I feel he is attentive, intuitive and serious about me making positive changes in my life. He knows what he's doing and is able to feed off who I am as an individual and not treat me as just another patient. His care seems individualized and curtailed to my specific issues which means he's really listening and compassionate. He is always on time (unlike other psychs that make you wait 45 mns) and helped get my prescriptions filled even if it meant doing a prior authorization. I definitely recommend him!

Also, like most Asians, I was raised in an environment that didn't believe in therapy. However, I went to see Dan for several months in 2013. He was recommended to me by a close coworker. I was very unhappy with my firm job and was suffering from depression and severe anxiety. I wanted to find a natural way to deal with my depression and anxiety and after gentle nudging from my husband, I finally made an appointment with Dan. Dan was warm, kind, and caring. I felt safe to share all my regrets and fears. He was so patient and never judgmental. Plus, it was nice to talk to someone who I didn't feel like I was burdening with my issues since he was being paid to listen. He gave me practical advice/"homework" on how to manage my work-induced anxiety. He gently challenged the false "truths" I kept ruminating on but let me come to the realization myself that many of these "truths" were created by my fears. He was immediately available during emergencies and I could tell that he truly cared about me as his patient/client. He was extremely instrumental in helping me confront my past and gain the courage to take major steps in order live the life that I wanted. I know that sounds cliche but it's true. I am so so thankful for Dan. That's Dan. Always refreshingly honest and seeking what's best for his clients. I remember that on our last appointment, he said that although he enjoyed speaking with me, he didn't think I needed to see him anymore. I highly recommend Dan whether it's for treatment of depression and/or anxiety or career counseling. My sessions with him changed my life and I continue to use the lessons I learned in those sessions every day.

Last night my wife had an inexplicable and intense sense of weakness and nausea for the third time in the past month. She couldn't sleep and was sick all night, and was very weak this morning and still nauseous. I called Dr. Suozzi's office first thing in the morning to get an urgent appointment, and was told that Dr. Suozzi is off on Fridays. However, his staff, who is very caring and polite (unlike Dr. Ostrager, it turns out) was quite accommodating and suggested that my wife see Dr. Ostrager today in the same office. I scheduled the appointment. When Dr. Ostrager saw her, she was shockingly dismissive of her symptoms. She didn't even take her temperature, her blood pressure, any blood tests -- or any medical tests whatsoever. No stethoscope, no nothing! She didn't examine her, even when my wife said that she has had persistent neck pain for five months. Instead, Dr. Ostrager said "it's probably muscular" -- without even touching her neck or looking for anything abnormal. Unbelieveable. She told my wife, "I can't help you" -- and said she should see a gastroenterologist. Her only advice to my wife, other than that, was to try to have a bland diet. And she sent her home (again, without even taking her temperature). Some physician. I called Dr. Ostrager's office to complain, and they said she would call me when she's through with the next patient -- but she didn't. When I called back at 4 pm, I got a recording saying that the office was closed for the weekend. Don't make the mistake we made -- if you want an excellent doctor, see Dr. Suozzi at the same location. Dr. Ostrager is a rude, uncaring and highly unprofessional physician. A total waste of time.

I had a series of negative experiences with Dr. Saftchick and his office that dissuaded me from…read morecontinuing as his patient. Basically, I found him to be both incompetent and unprofessional. At my very first appointment, I asked him to examine a few places on my skin that I was concerned about, which took about 5-10 minutes. He informed me afterwards that I would be charged $125 out of pocket, because such an exam does not count as part of a checkup in my insurance plan. He also misheard me and prescribed the wrong dose of a medication that I was already taking at the time. Throughout this first appointment, he appeared underconfident, saying things like "I always wanted to do something creative. Medicine is pretty rote." When I called to get a prescription refill, Dr. Saftchick was on vacation and was using an answering service that told me the doctor on call would return my call in order to refill my prescription, but I never got a call back, even though I spoke with them multiple times. When Dr. Saftchick returned from vacation, he sent my prescription to the wrong pharmacy. His receptionist told me that she would take care of having it sent to the correct pharmacy, which she never did. When Dr. Saftchick finally got back to me about the mixup, he said the receptionist never told him about my message and when I said "oh, weird" (because, I don't know, what do you even say?) he said, rudely, "no, it's not weird, the receptionist made a mistake and we're understaffed in the middle of a pandemic." He then told me HE DID NOT KNOW HOW TO SEND A PRESCRIPTION TO A DIFFERENT PHARMACY. So I called the pharmacy and figured it out myself.

As I've been packing to move in with my partner, I've been taking stock of my life, and of my gratitude, in particular to Dr. Abbott for both saving my life and making my life a joy to live. I was surprised to see Kay W.'s review and actually laughed when I read it because she couldn't possibly have described a person more opposite of Dr. Abbott. Although we didn't know this nine years ago, my drug metabolization is downright wacky, and I was fortunate that Dr. Abbott was conservative and precise with her prescribing. I have a physical disability for which doctors always try to prescribe muscle relaxants and narcotics, and I've been deeply lucky to have Dr. Abbott advocate for other solutions on my behalf, like physical therapy and non-narcotic pain killers. Dr. Abbott was also the first psychiatrist I encountered who didn't treat me as if I had a behavioral problem. When I first started seeing her in my early twenties, I was really stunted and benefited from her expertise as a child and adolescent psychiatrist. She was able to communicate with me about my issues in a clear, insightful way, and handled my reactivity without taking it personally. In fact, each time I freaked out on her she took the opportunity to be a stable force in my life who would not give up on me even when I wanted to drive everyone away. When I was a teen, my parents were told that I would probably have to be institutionalized for life. I think that or death really would have been my fate if I hadn't been referred to Dr. Abbott. Because of Dr. Abbott's care, I finished college; I have a job I love; supportive, loving relationships; a healthy sense of self worth; and I serve on boards for two nonprofits in my community. Dr. Abbott essentially took a feral child with complex trauma and a familial lineage of mental illness, and turned out an adult with actual coping skills and beautifully managed mental health. It's funny to write a "review" of someone who has given you the chance to live a rich life, but here it is: There's no one like Dr. Abbott. If you are trying to find a psychiatrist for yourself or your child and you have lost hope, Dr. Abbott will be your ally in regaining that hope. She will care about you; she will believe in you. She will help you lead the life you deserve to live.

When I first interviewed her I knew she would be a psychiatrist that could be counted upon to adeptly explore my problems and issues, diagnose them, intervene as appropriate with the right mix of medications, talk through everything that needed to be confronted, and address the underlying depression and anxiety swiftly and expertly. And that's exactly what she did! Dr. Abbott is fabulous. She is a warm and intelligent professional. I heartily recommend her to anyone with psychological/psychiatric problems requiring rapid and appropriate attention.
