I was excited to finally get a haircut after going months without one. It was so easy to make an appointment with them online. I felt safe during COVID-19 due to the requirement to wear a mask and enforcement of social distancing, although I would have appreciated more available hand sanitizer for customers to use. Avi gave me one of the best haircuts I've ever gotten. You can tell he really cares about his work and that it is more than just a job to him. Enjoyed my first visit to Fine Shaves & Cuts. I was nervous trying out a new place and new barber, but I think you'll have a great experience as well. Roman was incredibly friendly, personable, and he seems like a great local business owner! He can do just about any cut in 10-20 minutes max (seriously, fastest cuts I've ever seen), including a straight-edged neck shave. It's best to make an appointment, especially on weekends. Call in a few days before and you're likely to get your preferred spot, or you can try calling in the morning for something later in the day. Unfortunately, they did recently increase prices after January 2019 ($25 for student cut + extra $5 if you want a shampoo), but I would argue the quality and speed of service more than compensates! read more

I have been to this barber twice. First time was a haircut by Avi. No issues; he did a nice job. Second visit, I saw Romam for a haircut and shave (not a beard trim; I mean a full, clean shave). The haircut was good and Romam did exactly what i asked. The shave, however, was a disappointment. It took 40 minutes, and I thought, "This is going to be great. He's taking his time." When I got home, I looked at my face up close in a mirror, and saw that he missed a lot of spots. I had to get in the shower and shave all of the spots he had missed. I was disappointed with the shave. A lot of the spots he missed were quite obvious. How he missed them, I have no idea. Especially after I had been in the chair for 40 minutes and he had an up-close view of my mug. I had given him a generous tip because I thought he had given me a great shave, too... The guys are friendly and the shop is clean. I just wish I had received a good quality shave there. It was definitely a poor job, and as a result, I will not go back. read more

Hands down best haircut in center city. These guys have been around a long time and they have it down. It is the fastest, best, most comfortable and affordable hair cut in the city. I started going during my intern year at Jefferson and continued there for all 6 years. It is right across the street from the hospital, I'd often stop in for a quick cut between cases or right after work. Extremely convenient. Roman is my favorite but Avi is also extremely talented. After coming back here from a year hiatus, which I enjoyed all of my previous haircuts, I actually was a bit disappointed, I made an appointment same day and was seated with a new Asian barber. She was nice but the language barrier seemed to get in the way. After I explained that I just wanted a trim on the top with 1/2 inch off and a 4 on the sides, she nodded in agreement. She then proceeded to cut my hair after using the spray gun first to wet my hair. I think she cut the same hair 3 separate times to "even" everything out. But I walked out almost with a buzz cut in the end. The sides we're a lot shorter than expected and honestly I don't know if I would go back due to this quality issue. She never once stopped to ask if it was short enough before it was already too late. Stick with either Roman or Avi. Hopefully these guys can keep the quality strong. read more

Just moved here and tried showing a video from my last barber of how I'd like my hair cut. He barely looked at it and said yea yea yea I know how to do that. My fade is uneven when you compare my right and left side. I have a hard part and the ends of my combover stick out. I can see lines in my fade. My top is rounded instead of squared. He asked me how fast my last barber would take. I told him about 30 minutes. Then he tells me that's not bad...she's not too slow...no one was quicker than they were. Well, he had that right. I was out in 20 minutes. I'd rather he have taken the time to ask me what I wanted instead of just assuming and flying through my cut. I'll be looking for a new place. read more

Having lived and studied in Philly for 4 years before moving back to NY, I can tell you that CC was genuinely bereft of a decent barber until Roman opened up his shop in 2012. I was one of his first customers and have never gone to another barber since. That's saying something considering I now live in NY (I schedule trips to Philly for work/personal business and make sure I plan my haircuts around being able to go to Roman). He's a high quality barber and a high quality person. He gives each of his customers his full attention, gives you exactly what you request, and does it all with exceptional skill and a smile. He's brought a luxury NY barber experience to Philly (which includes a post-cut, hot lather neckline shave down, a hot towel hair cleaning, and general hair-cutting competence), something that was sorely lacking before his arrival. Whether you're a student or a regular customer, his services can't be beat. Fine Shaves & Cuts is a clean, modern, quality establishment that since opening day has earned the title of "Best Barber Shop in Philadelphia." Great haircut and great atmosphere! The last time I was here before today was about a year ago. One of the owners, Avi, cut my hair then and did a good job but I was just moving to town and by the time I needed a haircut again, I had just forgotten about the place. This time, after going to a few other local shops and getting "okay" haircuts, I thought I was trying another new place. My appointment was with Tuyet. Avi was there, cutting another client's hair. I didn't recognize him at first but when I did, I said hello and we joked about Tuyet being better. Tuyet did do an amazing job! She took her time but she wasn't slow. She paid attention to what she was doing and was in tune with my expectations. I had some difficulty understanding her English but it wasn't a problem because a good haircut transcends all languages. She really did a nice job! Both owners were there today. They were friendly and helpful. I took a card this time so I can actually come back. Finding a great barber for a decent price can prove to be difficult in any city. When I was recommended to this shop after trying out a few others I had no expectations. But I am happy to report that I have now found what I was looking for! This place is always clean, has friendly staff, and most of all gives you the best haircut for an amazing price! This has been my go-to barber shop for a few years, but I think that may be changing in the future. I must preface this review by saying that most of the haircuts that I've gotten here have been great; Roman and Avi are great barbers, and always leave me feeling great. However, there is a woman who works there who is one of the most questionable barbers I've seen in my life. There is a language barrier, but on top of that she just won't cut your hair how you want it; she only cuts it extremely short, no matter what you say. I thought I had bad luck or said the wrong things the first time she cut it, but after seeing the large amount of reviews concerning her I've decided to share my opinion too. Today I went in for a cut and was seated with her. I made it very clear that I wanted a trim, just a quarter inch to about my eyebrows, because I was scared that she would cut my hair the way she did the previous time she cut it. She repeated that I just wanted a trim, nothing more. I took off my glasses, and she proceeded to cut my hair. The cut itself was mediocre; she hurt my scalp with the clippers and got a decent amount of water in my eyes, but the hair came off my head. When I put them back on, I saw that she had cut the majority of my hair off. As others have said, it wasn't an objectively bad haircut, but it was exactly what I had asked her not to do. I silently vowed to find another shop, paid, and left. Again, Roman and Avi are great barbers, but I don't want to risk going here again if I get seated with the woman. I have gotten several haircuts and shaves here with the majority of them being amazing. Roman and Avi both give quality cuts that earn their relatively hefty price tag. Unfortunately, the quality of the barbers is not consistent across the board. About a month ago, I had the Asian female barber for a cut, and after being seated with her the past two cuts, it is unlikely I will return to this establishment. There was a bit of a language barrier during my first cut that resulted in the top of my hair being cut too short (an inch long VS an inch cut off). I got slightly upset, but did not blame the barber as I understood it was not entirely her fault and I could have been clearer. I tried to convey that I did not want the top any shorter than she'd already cut it, and she got very defensive and started giving me attitude the rest of the cut. When I asked her to go back in and sharpen some of the lines with a straight razor, she said she did not want to in case she cut me. I laughed saying that I'd never had a barber afraid to use a straight razor, but now I was scared she would cut me so I'd skip it. She then insisted on using it to prove she could and "whatever you want, you're the boss." She did not use shaving cream for some reason. She also cut me. Several times. I did not notice this until I got home. Fast forward a month and during my appointment set up I requested any barber besides her. Somehow I still ended up being seated with her. I did not want to make a scene and figured I'd give her a second chance. She definitely remembered me from the last cut and was giving me attitude the entire time as if she was still offended I was not entirely satisfied with my first cut (which was nearly $40 after tip. You'd think at these prices customer satisfaction might be a higher concern). The haircut was noticeably better this time, although my beard was cut rather unevenly on my neck. Even after I pointed out that it was much higher up on one side, she was not able to entirely fix it. For the money being paid, I would think the barber should have enough skill to give a decent shave. Honestly, if it wasn't for the condescending attitude she gave me the entire cut, I probably would still be a customer here and would not have written this review, but the combination of attitude and lack of skill for an absurd price has permanently driven me away. I am a student, so i get a discount which is helpful when you are on a tight budget. They are always flexible with scheduling and a pleasure to converse with during your cut.
