I'm glad most people seem to have had good cuts from this place.  I had a cut by apprentice Shawn, and would recommend that you avoid. I came in with very clear instructions on how I liked my hair cut, including pictures from the front and the side.  I also said exactly how long I wanted it on top.  Shawn's attitude is cavalier, as he largely disregarded all of the instructions I gave him.  The haircut I left with is not what I wanted, and will take me at least a month to grow back out on top (he took a full inch off the top when I asked for a quarter inch).  He mentioned at the end that guys either cut their hair "long" or "short".   Do yourself a favor and skip this barbershop, as there are plenty of better options in Philly and even nearby. read more

I went to this shop out of desperation because my normal shop didn't have anything available, and I left kicking myself for not going to this shop to begin with years ago. It's a pretty small shop with 3 chairs, and feels a bit snug, but it's laid out really well and nicely decorated. I took a chance going with an apprentice (Shawn), who was the only one with availability, and honestly it's was one of the best cuts I've had in the area. Winter is almost always that time when I let my hair grow out to gain an extra layer of warmth. But thanks to global warming for better or worse I haven't needed to do that this year, and with a new job I was looking to give my shaggy head a needed change to go along with it. When walking through my new jobs neighborhood I came across this shiny new barber shop that looked like one that was hard to pass up on. And with an easy online booking experience I was on my way to my best. Haircut. EVER! Sailor Tony is a Navy veteran who honed is traditional barber skills in Florida and Toronto after completing barber school under the GI Bill. And he decided to bring his classic shop with a solid vintage and punk rock aesthetic to his native Philadelphia and Fishtown. After being able to book an appointment online in less than 30 minutes, I was warmly welcomed, and Tony did a good job of hearing out what type of style I was looking to get while offering up plenty of solid suggestions. After a solid trim and electric razor work I was well on my way to getting what felt like the best cut I've had in recent memory! But then Tony took it to a whole new level by using a straight razor to even out my back and sides, massaging everything out with a hot towel, and giving my full head of hair the pomade treatment. With service like that Franklin's Barbershop went above and beyond. And with the easy online booking, reasonable price at $25, and solid rockabilly punk soundtrack in the background, I'm sold and ready to come back again! read more

Probably one of the best haircuts I ever gotten for a long time. Since my barber past away few years ago I couldn't find a barbershop I liked. Recently needed a haircut but the place I went to didn't have anything available. I did my research and wanted to try Franklin's barber since it was close by where I live. Definitely set up an appointment because they seem to be busy all the time. The vibe felt like I was in the 90s, music was great, great hospitality, you can grab a drink in the fridge, and make you laugh. Shawn was my barber and he did an outstanding job. I actually can't talk to the work the guys do here...as I was scheduled for a cut and despite the fact that I left an hour before the cut, 76 killed me and ended up late. I tried to get in contact with them to let them know I'd be late...but they have no phone. I am not blaming them for my delay, Philly traffic of the fact they have other clients, but it was either attempt to get there (which I did) or no-show. Finally a barber shop that knows how to cut hair. I think this is my fourth review for barbershops on girard Ave, the other reviews are not positive... Here I got a professional haircut, at a reasonable price without all of the other bullshit that has been documented in other reviews. These guys clearly know what they are doing and take the time to get it right. I got a cut from the apprentice barber who took the time out to consult with the owner how to fix the fuck up from the last barber. Was a little embarrassing to have explained how shitty that last cut was, but I appreciated that they took the time to address it and give me a good cut. Far and away the best barbershop going!! Unfortunately I missed a few appts do to crazy work schedule and had to try other shops in the Fishtown area. These 2 appts at these other places made me appreciate Franklins more than I did prior. I have been going to Vincent since before he even stepped foot at Franklins and he always makes me look my best. He has his hands full on fixing my hair from the last Butcher job I received on Frankford Ave but I know he will get me looking my best as always!!! The talent doesn't stop at Vincent. These are merely the fine details added to enhance the experience at Sailor Tony's "Franklin's Barber Shop". These are not the reasons that will keep coming back. The haircut is meticulous. The service is exceptional. Because it is appointment only, you will never feel rushed. I go every other week and the experience is consistent to the point I can count the minutes by the time the scissors are done or the neck is shaved or the hot towel is placed to clean things up. I've never seen less conversation between barber and patron at a shop. What I did have to hear was Jay droning on about the week's political talking points for 30 minutes straight. You would think the total silence from the 4 patrons would be a clue but he was undeterred. If you go to the barber to have a nice relaxing cut and enjoyable conversation I would go someplace else. If you want to hear Jay rehearsing for the linguist olympics then you'll have a great time here. read more

Franklin's has a really cool feel. It feels like you walked into the 1940's shop outside of Pearl Harbor - you'll get it when you go. My disappointment came when their views on "do's and dont's" of haircutting differed from my previous barber (who is also extremely talented), which forced me to leave with my hair not being cut how I asked specifically because they simply disagreed. While I appreciate educated advice, when it comes at a $25 cost, I think the customer should leave happy. They were pompous in their delivery and I couldn't recommend the shop to anyone for that alone. read more

I am a Fishtown local in my late forties. I saw a new barbershop had opened up when out for a walk and saw Tony the barber and caught a glimpse of inside the shop. It made me nostalgic seeing the barber chair etc. Time for a haircut I checked out the website and found out Tony also does hot towel shave and beard trim. Online booking is available so it is super easy, I booked haircut/shave n all good stuff. Tony welcomed me with an offer of some good coffee or a cold beverage (high life pony or a soda) nice touch. I immediately felt relaxed and nostalgic taking in all the art and photographs from WW ll, barbers chair, tools paraphernalia etc from time gone by. It took me back to when I was a boy/teen. Tony set me up in the chair and started on my hair as some Rockabilly played on the Bakelite Radio. I felt my head getting lighter as Tony skillfully used his clippers on me. It wasn't long before Tony Spun me around to reveal my nicely tapered and slicked down hair. Good job and good conversation. Next was the shave and all kinds of towels and potions, super relaxing and close. I could barely drag myself from the chair I was so relaxed. I recommend Sailor Tony,Franklins Barber shop. Great shop! I'm new to the area and decided to book an appointment, the system works great, I was sitting in the chair a couple hours later with no wait. The shop is very clean and a great vibe, really liked the old school chairs. Tony was very professional and easy going. And most importantly, the cut was exactly what I was looking for clean lines and very well done. When you walk in the door for the first time there's a familiarity you experience. It's the smell of the bay rum aftershave tonic and the talc powder. The sound of the combs being tapped on the side of the glass disinfecting jars. The music drifting from the restored 1940s radio. And the sight of the correctly attired barber working at the restored 1940s barberchair. Every single working artifact in this room screams pride of ownership and extreme attention to detail. And it's not too much. It's a collection of pieces that work together and compliment each other. Let's talk about the man behind the shop. This is not just a fine looking shop or a collection of antiques. In the world of barbering Anthony "Sailor Tony" Reilly is a traditionalist. (He earned that moniker in the Navy.) He works fast and clean. His haircuts are meticulous. His shaves are relaxing and thorough. And as for the service, he charges a more than fair price. (It makes me happy to know he supports a young family with it.) Overall, and in every aspect, a five star experience. Don't expect any fuss, frills or fake niceties. I have been through probably at least 15 barbers in Philly since moving here a few years ago. I would mostly try to stay near whatever area I was living in at the time but decided to try something different for this cut and I am SO glad I did. I checked out several of the reviews for different shops all around before booking an appointment with John. I usually just go for a standard cut and a beard trim. Which is perfect because this seems to be their specialty. The whole time I was being worked on I was having flashbacks of a shop I used to go to with my grandfather in the mid 80s when I was a child. The smells, the spectacular playlist, the Americana memorabilia on the wall, the straight up classic barber feel, EVERYTHING! I was really pleased with the cut when I left with a HUGE smile. The subsequent two days have been even more uplifting. I would say at least 10 people have complimented me on the cut. Most of my co-workers even asked if I had gone somewhere new because they could tell it was different somehow. The one thing that really surprised me was the hot towel and scented goo that was used before and after the straight razor. I had a similar experience at a place in Rittenhouse for like $100 so was not expecting it at a place with prices like this. Admittedly I'm a barbershop snob and a haircut addict. I get my hair cut once every 10 days like clockwork, and prefer to keep it tight and clean around the ears and nape. There is nothing more repugnant than a hairy unkempt neck, fellas. I started coming here right after they opened and "Sailor Tony", the shop's proprietor has been my barber since day one. He is classically trained, adeptly fluent in all forms of barbering (scissors, clippers, and razors) and talented beyond his years. The man is a genius and probably the best barber I've ever had. The shop is nostalgic of the kind of place I'd get my haircuts as a kid and everything is pin-point perfect from the color palette to the decor to the vintage tunes to the refurbed fridge, radio and coffee percolator. Customers are offered complimentary refreshments (hot & cold) and enjoy a sense of fellowship, community, and camaraderie I've not seen at many local places where you're cram-jammed into a space vying for a chair. I think what got me about the haircut Jay gave me was that he cut my hair with the future of my hair in mind. A few haircuts ago I got a cut I wasn't happy with, in fact I was super upset about it. The journey to growing out a hack job can be long and painful but honestly Jay made me feel pretty soothed about it. I told him what I want, he told me what he thought about it and then when the haircut was all over he debriefed me about what he did and what his goals were for my hair. We love that!
