For those that enjoy history, Kelly Point is dedicated to the memory of Virgil Kelly who made many contributions during his years of service city councilor (1939 -1961) Kelly View Point is also the site of several veterans' memorials honoring those that served our country in various wars, and who gave the greatest sacrifice. Take the time to visit each memorial, read the inscriptions and honor those that selflessly served. The memorials are: the Loren R. Kaufman Monument, the Vietnam War Memorial, the Veterans Memorial, and the Desert Shield-Storm Memorial. This area has its own parking strip so you can pull right up. Perched overlooking the expansive landscape of The Dalles below, it's a beautiful spot. There is a great walking path across the street if you want to enjoy a one mile walk and really take in the sweeping views. There are always people walking and jogging along the path. Across the street is Sorosis Park with a playground for the kids, picnic tables, covered gathering areas and restroom facilities.

Originally there was a toll but when the bond was paid off in 1974, the bridge removed the toll and it's been free ever since, fingers crossed. While the Bridge of the Gods in Stevenson is a stunningly beautiful bridge, and the Hood River Bridge offers beautiful views, both are toll bridges costing $2 each direction. Whiile $2 is not a lot of money, if you travel between Hood River and White Salmon frequently, it adds up. The Dalles Bridge, built in 1953, is currently under repairs. "Starting the first weekend after Labor Day 2021, The Dalles Bridge will be closed from Thursday nights at 8 p.m. through Monday mornings at 6 a.m. These closures will occur every weekend until Memorial Day 202 weekends, leaving it open during the week for those commuting. " From November through January, the migrating Eagles nest in the trees along the river on the Oregon side. It's amazing to see so many in one place, especially at feeding time. Soaring over the river and land surrounding the water hunting for fish and critters.

The Dalles Bridge was opened on December 18,1953 and is a steel cantilever truss bridge that spans the Columbia river between the Dalles,Oregon and Dallas Port , Washington. It carries the traffic of US Route 197. The bridge had a toll from its opening until November 1, 1974 when the construction Bond was paid off.

He got me the metal I needed and then we talked about some of the machines in the machine shop, taking his time and not rushing me out of the shop. Came here on a sunny Sunday to learn some history and it was a great experience. The docent in the…read moremain building was really friendly and gave us some history about the property and The Dalles. We walked around the house and enjoyed the architecture and the collections. Then we went across the yard and saw a bunch of old wagons and cars from the time period - the horse-drawn hearses were quite interesting, as was the electric car from 1902! Outside the building, my kids enjoyed petting the resident cat Midnight, who was mostly friendly. We then proceeded up the hill to see the Anderson homestead, which was also really cool to see. We probably spent just over an hour here and it was worth it.

We recently attended the fundraiser for the raptor program. It was a great night of raising money…read moreto support the program. We are members of the center, but we honestly attended this event due to one particular employee. We were particularly impressed with Bennett during one recent visit. His knowledge and dedication to the welfare of the birds was very apparent. He spent extra time educating us about the program and specific birds. After speaking with him we felt impelled to attend the fundraiser and help out further. The event seemed a tad slow and disorganized upon entry, but soon enough things got rolling more smoothly. Some raptors were brought out, and again while presenting Bennett demonstrated his care for the animals in making sure their comfort and welfare was being placed before any promised viewings for the night. A hat tip to Bennett for his dedication in particular, and to the center overall for the program and care for animals.
