Felt like it justified the money we paid to get in. I saw this display highlighting this local woman who was one of the first female authors from the area. I was excited to check out the book and went to the gift shop to get it. Not there. I asked the woman working and she blew me off and walked away mid-conversation to go sit down again like it was a joke. I'd much rather support the museum than Amazon. Is anyone listening? Why wouldn't you carry this book?

I tend to be an Easy A when it comes to museums. As a history buff, I love these kind of places…read morethat preserve and share our local history. However, this one didn't really didn't wow me. The museum is free, although contributions are gladly accepted, and it is run by volunteers. The building is a historic house in Marina Park with four small rooms on two floors connected by a narrow staircase. Outside, a separate building displays Oregon's first locomotive engine, The little Oregon Pony. The small space is filled with a mishmash of antiques and photographs from a variety of eras. It is a bit overstuffed and actually feels more like an antique store, rather than a museum. There are three rooms upstairs, two of which are furnished as display bedrooms with an abundance of quilts. The other room contains photos with old fashioned typed descriptions, a large Boy Scout flag and a mannequin in military uniform. Downstairs, one room is dedicated to the local Native American tribes with an abundance or arrowheads and arrowhead art. There is also a small kitchen. Now, I love a good vintage kitchen, but this again, was lacking. In particular, the linoleum kind of killed the historic vibe. The museum was founded in 1969 and it appears that many of the items haven't been updated since that time. The Columbia Gorge Interpretive Center across the river in Washington is really the place that showcases this area to its fullest. Perhaps not fair to compare the two, but I would only visit this museum again if I had another activity in the area.

A reminder of life well lived. The Indians, the farmers, the Chinese, the Japanese, the Mexicans all played a part in what Hood River county has become and all had a little representation in this small gem of a museum. The staff was friendly and informative and helped make this trip down memory lane a pleasure.

When I visited, it had a fascinating temporary exhibit on laundry. You wouldn't think pioneer-and-beyond laundry to be an interesting subject, but the exhibit led you through a progression of machines, and a history of the people who had laundry services for the town, that made the early days of Hood River really come to life. The permanent exhibits were also well done. This is not just a small-town, slap a few pictures and descriptions on pasteboard kind of museum. Check it out!

The upper level was closed during our visit, but we still able to visit the basement, there's a small museum, souvenir shop and a café. The staffs were very friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable, making the visit even more enjoyable. Definitely worth a stop if you're driving along the Historic Columbia River Highway.

We weren't going to play or interact with the museums when children were there and it was sciences we already knew. I was saddened thinking it was a museum for adults. In addition, we absolutely bought the wrong tickets for the planetarium. We ended up at a KPOP Delon Hunters Laser Show. We didn't know what to expect. Whoever made the show did an exceptional job, but we wanted to see something that completely encompasses the entire planetarium. Ultimately, perfect for children. Not adults. The 4 stars is that it is still a great museum.... For children.

Came here on a sunny Sunday to learn some history and it was a great experience. The docent in the…read moremain building was really friendly and gave us some history about the property and The Dalles. We walked around the house and enjoyed the architecture and the collections. Then we went across the yard and saw a bunch of old wagons and cars from the time period - the horse-drawn hearses were quite interesting, as was the electric car from 1902! Outside the building, my kids enjoyed petting the resident cat Midnight, who was mostly friendly. We then proceeded up the hill to see the Anderson homestead, which was also really cool to see. We probably spent just over an hour here and it was worth it.
