Got the medium size Italian sub. Absolutely phenomenal. Comes with a pickle on the side!

Uncle Harry's Deli Restaurant - The Neil on rye

We picked up carryout from Uncle Harry's Deli tonight and left feeling pretty underwhelmed,…read moreespecially for the price. The inside has an old-school diner vibe, which could be charming, but the overall experience didn't quite match. Staff interaction was neutral--not unfriendly, but not particularly welcoming either. My husband ordered the Lynne sandwich and I had the Adele, along with a bowl of matzo ball soup. The soup was definitely the highlight--flavorful and comforting--but at nearly $9 for a bowl, it felt overpriced for what you get. Unfortunately, the sandwiches didn't live up to expectations. The meat was piled in the center of the bread, leaving the ends with little to nothing in each bite, which made them feel poorly constructed and just overall mediocre. We were also surprised by the number of upcharges--extra for toasting the bread, extra for grilling, and even a 3% fee for using a credit card. It all adds up quickly. For two sandwiches and a shared soup, our total came to just over $40, which felt steep given the quality. It's disappointing because we wanted to like this place, but the high prices just didn't align with the food or experience. Unfortunately, we'll likely be crossing Uncle Harry's off our list.

I also had the chance to try their reuben. Man! Flavors make you wanna hum. Customer service is very much "Detroit". You get what you get. When you come be respectful, be patient, and mind your business. The place looks like a regular deli with plenty of seating inside and parking outside. Open late as well so it's good for a late night craving. Definitely recommend to come through if you're in the area.

The wall of plastic you order through is a bit off putting. I wanted to get the pastrami but I had no idea that was build your own pick. I should have gotten the corned beef. The pastrami was delicious I just don't think I chose the right toppings. Served with crispy deli pickles. I also ordered the deviled eggs but was sad to see them tossed in the bag upside down; very messy and hard to eat they had a nice sweet flavor. The main problem is the cleanliness or lack thereof. It could use a deep deep cleaning. Also there are people hustling to get your dollars. A guy was selling one stick of incense for $5. Not sure if I will go back but I might want to try the corned beef egg rolls.

I can't believe the place is still here after all of these years. There are 2 types of subs here: Italian, and "Other Subs", so you know that this shop sprang from the vibrant Italian community that once populated Detroit. The Italian Subs at Gonella's are ordered according to how many layers it builds up (which I think is a unique concept). These layered Gonella Italian Subs are layered with a variety of Italian meats (Hard Salami, Salami Cotto, Mortadella, Smoked Ham and Capicola), provolone cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions & Gonella's homemade dressing. Soft or hard roll. Extras: Peppers (+.50) Cheese (+.50) - (Turkey is reserved for the "Other Subs). 6 Layers Meat, 1 Layer Cheese --- $8 8 Layers Meat, 2 Layer Cheese --- $9 12 Layers Meat, 2 Layer Cheese --- $12 14 Layers Meat, 3 Layer Cheese --- $13 18 Layers Meat, 3 Layer Cheese --- $14 The subs are heavy and delicious. Soft sub buns, tons of stacks of meat, lettuce and tomato or not. No one goes hungry after a sub here. Some deli spots tend to skimp on the protein, but not this place. My team members favorite is the Italian, 6 stacks. I usually will go for a turkey or chicken stack. They offer up to 18 stacks, haven't tried that yet.
