Attended this small-scale halloween costume party in Alameda this past Saturday, and had a wonderful time. Such chill vibes in the venue, even when crowded in the cozy space, embellished with halloween decor and a somewhat limited amount of seating. We enjoyed the live musical performances during the evening... Ledbetter & his Best Bet (folk rock), Islavation (island reggae), bonus 3rd set of halloween songs with mashup of both bands. The first band did covers like Bee Gees' Stayin' Alive, and the second band, awesome reggae hits! They were all great, and kept us in a good mood all night. The costume contest was cool, since it was halloween weekend (1st prize winning a $50 bar tab). The boxed wine costume was my fave, winning 2nd place, only beat by grim reaper barbie, lol. With food served till 11pm, we were able to enjoy some bar bites from their menu later at night. The meatball dish came with garlic bread slices and a zesty marinara sauce that was quite spicy, but just too delicious to stop eating. And the flatbread was basically a thin and crispy rectangular pizza, it was tasty as well. Our cocktails were on the weaker side, very little alcohol, but flavors were good enough. In short, fun and cute venue, awesome live music for special events (and cool and creepy halloween decor), friendly but slow service, food is fantastic but drinks are weak.

Great location. Easy to get to on public transportation. Very friendly atmosphere, down to earth and it has a real neighborhood feel as well. Friendly staff, nice accommodations as well. The open mic was just what I was looking for in terms of a performance venue. As a vocalist, the Fireside *theater* is an excellent space to work in. Justin, the soundman, does a great job in getting things all ready to go for the event. He is also very thoughtful as well. I would have given 5 stars, but honestly, I can't afford $8 for a beer. I would recommend a $3 can beer, such as Pabst, or Miller, 12 oz can. Good spot, great location, friendly and welcoming otherwise.

The staff was mega nice and helped us answer all of our burning questions. The drinks were perfect! I honestly can't remember everything I had, but the menu was expansive and all the drinks were tasty. We got a bit hungry and ordered some empanadas. I loved these! Incident: My party of 7 came to Mad Oak around 5pm on Monday evening, 7/20. I did not have my ID on hand as I didn't realize I needed it for entry. I was not planning to consume alcohol. The staff member in charge of the outdoor entry let me in anyway after a little bit of friendly back and forth. One of our friends arrived later and similarly did not have their ID. The same staff member turned them away very rudely and dismissively. I went over to the staff member to let him know that our friend was with us and I also did not have my ID. He responded very rudely despite all members of our party being very respectful. He replied me saying, "What did I tell her?! What did I tell her?!", without explanation. Our friend who was turned away identifies as they/them and without explanation from the staff member, and inconsistent application of rules pertaining to ID, I suspect it might have been a situation where our friend was unfairly discriminated against for their appearance. To sum it up, it was not clear that IDs were required for entry otherwise I would have prepared my party ahead of time; the staff member inconsistently applied an already unclear rule; he did not explain why one guest was allowed and not another, even in the same party; and lastly, he was unnecessarily rude. Our whole party ended up leaving Mad Oak to go somewhere we could all be together. In my outreach to the restaurant a couple days later, I asked for a response to let me know that they have addressed the issue and there has been no response to date.

My favorite part is their collection thoughtful, balanced, complex drinks. If you want a variety of delectable old fashioneds with different spirits -- you're in luck! ---- Drinks ---- The cocktails are the main reason we keep coming back! Old Fashioned menu. They actually have several varieties and I've really appreciated how they use a different spirit for each! I won't review every single one, but you can't go wrong based on what flavor profile you want. They're all relatively sophisticated, balanced, spirit-forward, and consistently well made. The rest of the cocktail menu is equally thoughtful. Complex, creative, and well executed without trying too hard or going over the top with flavors or presentation. The food is delicious as well although we're usually just here for drinks before/after a meal. More small bites than full meals, but everything we've had has been tasty and pairs well with the drinks. We really enjoyed the empanadas; great flavor and execution. ---- Environment ---- Warm, cozy, and stylish -- but not pretentious or obnoxious. Music volume is always at a level where you can actually have a conversation, which I really appreciate! It does get busy, especially on weekends, but it's never been extreme. We've been seated immediately or only with a short wait most times. ---- Service ---- Friendly, welcoming, and attentive! Always had good experiences with the staff even when busy. Most of them have good recommendations. ---- Tips ---- Make a reservation if you can! Walk-ins are definitely possible, though you may end up sharing a larger communal table. We've done it before and honestly didn't mind. The bathroom can occasionally have a bit of a wait. ---- Overall ---- Love this place. It's become our go-to spot whenever we're in the mood for great cocktails and a relaxed evening and want a reliable experience. One of my favorite cocktail bars in Alameda.
