Southampton Summer Day Camp - Decorated for a Bar-Mitzvah! HUGE blank space!!

    Southampton Summer Day Camp

    (2 reviews)

Where do I even begin?! Best camp in Bucks County, if not the whole country! I think the fact that…read morethey are celebrating their 43rd anniversary speaks for itself. This fact alone, played a huge factor when selecting summer camp for my son this year. A camp that has successfully opened its doors every summer for the last almost half century must be good. And oh it is good. Very good! The grounds are beautiful. When you visit, you forget that you are close to home. It feels as though you drove a couple of hours into Poconos. Lush green lawns, many old trees, even a lake! The camp grounds are set up such as there is a little town, with little wooden arrow signs pointing in all directions. They have a large heated pool designed for both early swimmers as well as more mature ones. They have full tennis courts, basketball courts, soccer field and baseball field among others. They have a rock climbing wall and a zip-line that goes across the lake! A horse track with two horses. Probably so much more that I am forgetting as well. Each child gets a schedule packed full of activities. In fact, activities change every 45 minutes and transition is seamless. When visiting on parent day I was so impressed by organization of the place. Everything is timed and perfectly in tune with no glitches. I guess they have done it plenty enough in the last 43 years. We love the fact that our son gets swimming lessons once a day with an instructor as well as a free swim in the afternoon. We event received a progress report on his swimming progress, it was really nice to know where he stands. In addition to all the activities, there are constantly events going on as well. They had a show, where each bunk presented on stage in front of others. Color games, carnival week with carnival rides, a late night special, where kids stay later into the night. The excitement with which my son comes home is priceless. Every day he tells me about trying new activities such as cooking or new games that he has not tried before. Also, I love the fact that he was able to make friends very quickly. His Counselor Michelle is beyond nice and accommodating. She also happens to be his transportation. The pick-up and drop off at home is super convenient but next year we might even try extended hours, which are actually very affordable. Overall, I could not be happier with the camp. When we requested information, we actually received a DVD that had a long movie about day to day activities at the camp. It was very helpful. Jacque and Rick, the owners of the camp are very easy to get in touch with and always extremely helpful over the phone and email. In fact Jacque went out of her way to get me the information on registration only a day before the deadline and still gave me the discount. We love this camp and cannot wait to have our daughter there next year as well. We would highly recommend it to anyone!

I would avoid this place at all costs. This place is very pricey for a summer day camp in this area…read moreyet they nickel and dime you. At the camp show, one of the camp directors kept INSISTING you cannot record your own child! Multiple times she got up to chastise people who did nothing more than try to film their own child in the show! They sell a DVD of the show they are forcing you to buy if you want a video. Well, who has a DVD player these days? And this time around our child was so excited to be in the show and told family members all about it and since they could not attend were very disappointed not to be able to see a cell phone video of it. We did not order the DVD since we have no DVD player but we heard they took 7 months to send them out! So to recap, they ban you from filming your own child (imagine that!) so you have to buy their overpriced DVD which took them 7 months to send out! And this horrible woman who lacks basic social skills scolds parents during the show like they are kindergarteners! I recommend finding a camp who would not nickel and dime their camp families like this and treats their families with respect. We enrolled at another camp and told the new director this situation and he just chuckled and said, 'you are always welcome to take videos of your child here.'

With scenic walking trails, an outdoor classroom, day camps and a small indoor animal habitat, Briar Bush is a great spot for small children, couples on a date, or anyone looking for a brief respite from the urgency of the modern world. With free admission for locals and a small fee for out-of-towners, the preserve is accessible to all patrons provided that they are able to walk down some wooded trails that circle through the admittedly short walking routes. The centerpiece of the trails is a picturesque, secluded pond with benches for sitting and an interactive sign with information on the local fauna and flora. The indoor animal habitat has a small gift shop, pamphlets on upcoming events and information on other parks in the area, and several interesting animals such as a blind possum named Odin, a bearded lizard named Karl, and several other unique turtles and reptiles. All of Briar Bush can be walked through in an hour or so, but the low admission, interactive nature events and scenic walking trails will have you wanting to return again soon.

I chose this camp based on a familiar location and the fact that they offer pre-care (7:30 AM drop off) and "ET" Extended time (either 4:30 or 6 PM) after care. The actual camp is fine. Not great and not horrible. After about 2-3 weeks it just gets boring - the same thing every week. swimming every day (sometimes twice a day). NO FIELD TRIPS - which stinks. The administration and director are excellent - last year they had a BAD Assistant Director but she is gone. Counselors (high school and college age mostly) are hit or miss. Some are fun and great with the kids - others are marking time and just waiting for the day to be over. In any case, I am very grateful that they exist - because I gotta work and can not take the summer off to hang out with my first grader.

What was framed as "discipline" was in reality repeated humiliation of a child. I've since learned that other parents and campers have had similar experiences, which tells me this isn't an isolated issue but a pattern. When I raised these concerns with management, they refused to take them seriously and chose instead to protect staff members who should not be working with children. Accountability was nowhere to be found. To make matters worse, the camp confirmed in writing that my children did not attend the sessions we paid for, yet they refused to issue a refund. Their so-called "resolution" was a partial credit that could be transferred to another family as if I would ever recommend this place to anyone. This camp is mismanaged and dismissive of legitimate complaints. There are far better programs out there that actually care about kids and families. This is not one of them.
