Being new to town, it was so important to me to find a place with people my own age (28) who I could hang out with. I don't mean to say the church is full of 20-somethings, because it's not, but it's still very young at heart. I joined a few small groups at the church, which has been a great way to get to know people at the church, and for them to get to know me. In addition to small groups, there are a number of committees you can be a part of, like Communications, Green Team, Hospitality/Welcoming, FUN squad, Missions, Spiritual Formation, Worship ... just to name a few. Oh, I must mention that it's RIGHT next to the Brown Line Diversey Station. Just head East when you exit the station, pass Einsteins, and you are there! Here's my take on promoting churches: When you find a restaurant you love, you want to tell everyone about it. Church is no different: If you love a place, you want to share it. And Holy Covenant is a place I want to share!

It was the Mardi Gras celebration service, so a bit different than what they usually do (I would imagine) but it intrigued me enough to make me want to return. It felt like a very friendly, safe environment - wear what you want, come as you are, that sort of thing. There seemed to be a lot of young people, a few kids, and some elderly people. We will definitely be back! The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because we (as new people) weren't really welcomed by anybody. It's so overwhelming to go into a church for the first time and not know anyone, so I wish someone had come to chat with us! I guess I'll just have to be more forward next week :-)

To see people holding their phones in order to be able to read the live translation of the service into languages like Ukrainian and Spanish is a testament to the warmth of this community and the ability to connect cross-culturally. The services are beautiful with upbeat music and biblical teaching, and the childcare during the 11am service is just fantastic! My 3 1/2 year old loves her teachers, and my 10 month old enjoys the area set aside for crawlers. There's a vibrant young adult 20-30's group that's always hanging out and grabbing food together after service. There's coffee, tea and bagels after the first service in the upstairs fellowship area. The whole vibe is warm and welcoming! There are plenty of opportunities to connect during the week such as small group meetings in homes or Wednesday dinners at 6pm at the building with teaching afterwards for adults, youth, as well as elementary-aged children. Whatever your stage of life, everyone is welcome! Come experience a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, multi-generational, biblically grounded and gospel-focused church, near the heart of the city - You belong here!!

Edgewater Presbyterian Church has always made me feel part of the neighborhood, since the very first day i came to the church, after being acknowledged and greeted by Reverend Cathey. Reverend Cathey acknowledges all visitors, and everyone that attends EPC, which is a very good thing. I will continue to add to this review, but EPC does a lot on a regular with Sarah's Circle Shelter, Care for Real, and supports many other local programs in the neighborhood. Many different volunteer opportunities with EPC as well.

The space is a little tight up front but the sound is intimate and allows us to play a wide range of dynamics. Easy to get to, just west of Wrigley Field. Our orchestra board chair is a member of the church and spoke to their long tradition of supporting the arts and launching new organizations, which is a unique mission for a church in my experience. According to their lovely website they have a very open and welcoming atmosphere for which I congratulate them: "Holy Trinity is known for being a place of welcome. In the early 1990s it was one of the first "Reconciling in Christ" congregations in Chicago, publicly welcoming gays and lesbians. In the past decade young adults and a growing number of families with young children have found a home. At the same time, many people who have struggled with exclusive or hurtful forms of religion have breathed a sigh of relief within a community of acceptance and openness. A number of Chicago urban folks travel to our Lakeview location to find a spiritual home that is both rooted in ancient practices and in honest conversation with the questions and issues of our day and time."

They are even sponsoring a Syrian family whose visa was finally approved after the ban that encompassed several countries was lifted. The congregants wear name badges and I was greeted by quite a few people. That being said, this church was way too liberal for me. I found the pastor's comments to be insulting to more conservative Christians when he poked fun at evangelicals for asking if someone is saved. And during communion instead of saying "Body and Blood of Christ" they said "Bread of Life, Cup of Joy". But then again, this is the UCC so that's how they roll I guess. If you are very liberal, this is one of the more vibrant UCC churches and perhaps a good church for you.

I've done a lot of church-hopping in my lifetime but I have never been to a church as diverse as United Church of Rogers Park. People who actually stopped to talk & welcome us on our first visit there! They run and/or support programs that provide after-school help for kids, peace circles for youth trying to get out of the cycle of violence, and a free meal to all on Sunday evenings. Also, they are reconciling! My partner & I are welcomed and celebrated there. It may not be the church for everybody, but it sure is the place for me. Amen!
