Nutritious snacks/lunch is provided, there is a lot of outdoor play in the dedicated backyard, educational toys and books are in abundance, and positive encouragement is everywhere. As spots became available in Bay Ridge due to the pandemic, we still chose to keep our son with Gosia. The staff here really give the kids so much love and attention. They do art and cooking, and lots of other fun activities. They do flash cards and read books. He really has learned so much! They also have a backyard which is great because our little guy loves to be outdoors. He looks forward to going there every morning and is sad when it is time to go home.

She started the place after being dissatisfied with options for her own child, who is now an amazing and adorable precocious and sweet 3yo who helps her mom acclimate new babies - and their parents. Clearly Cindy's doing something right as a mom, and that spills over into her business as well. Her staff also seemed really vibrant and caring during that first visit, as they engaged the kids in yoga poses, dances, and magic tricks. They have proven to be phenomenal - totally loving and attentive, with an inexhaustible energy and patience. The infants and toddlers spend most of the time in separate areas, but there is still a lot of interaction, including outdoors, and all of the staff seem to know my son really well. If he's upset when I start to leave him at morning drop-off, they know exactly which toy to pull out to make him smile. Like most daycares in the area, Little Jewel is located in a converted one-bedroom apartment. But it doesn't feel as claustrophobic as some of the other ones I visited. It feels spacious and airy, with lots of nice, sturdy, wooden furniture; natural toys; and cute decor. They provide a small breakfast, lunch and snacks, and I suspect the hot lunch is probably the best meal our little one eats each day. And they have been willing to accommodate our little vegetarian. Our previous daycare was large and structured, almost like a school, with set schedules and weekly lesson plans, so I was a little apprehensive about the more laid-back routine at Little Jewel. They do have plenty of activities, they're just not documented to every detail, and they may change them up depending on the weather that day, or the children's individual interests. I do get the feeling my 2yo is learning a lot and his language skills (including Spanish - hooray!) and imaginative play have skyrocketed. He's also gaining lots of independence, as he helps in the kitchen and with clean-up, etc. I appreciate the individual attention he gets, and the love that is clearly lavished upon him - including a line-up for kisses as he leaves almost every day. They took all the precautions necessary to minimize COVID 19 transmission which I really liked. (they were all wearing masks, gloves, they didn't allow parents to fully come in to the day care, they met us by the curb). There is also a great backyard and kids spend a lot of time there as often as possible, and they enjoy the slide, the toys, gardening and water plays in summer. I found it was very important for our son to be able to be out as often as possible, to run and just be able to play outside. Victoria, the owner, is very attentive to parent's needs and concerns, and she makes sure parents connect to each other through parties gathering children and parents, which are great. On the first day of us meeting she mentioned that parents had access to cameras so that we could check in on our child being that he was first starting at the daycare. When I asked about it after enrolling him, she told me she didn't have the money to have them on because she didn't have enough students. Most of the days my son was alone. When I inquired about where the other children were, she responded with defensiveness. Bringing up pre-Covid numbers when in reality, they were very few children enrolled at her daycare. She also wouldn't allow us to show up unannounced, we needed to give her a heads up so that she could prepare. Which in my experience isn't right. Leads me to believe that she was hiding something. None of this would have been a problem wouldn't be a problem if the communication was clear and thorough. Whenever asked questions about what my son would do throughout the day it was met with aggravation and defensiveness she treated me and other family members who inquired with similar questions with the same level of distain. Her excuse was that she has several children and has been in this business for several years. I have never met a woman who works with children, who is so offended by a parents concern about their child. I have also never met a woman who works in childcare that views crying children as a problem, she was not solution oriented instead thought that a child, crying with an inconvenience to her business. There were several days where she had very limited information about what went on during our sons time at the daycare. She employed her children as well, who were also very unprofessional. There were many days where I rang the doorbell and was waiting outside with my baby and under 30° weather for 5-10 minutes, the reason being no one heard the doorbell, that is a hazard. Every time she answered the door she was on the phone as well. The children were kept in a dark room with the television on. she led me to believe that she was doing work on the rest of her house to open up the space so the children had room to play and move. That never happened either. All communication was done via text. One week she took off and close the daycare because it was her birthday and this was done last minute. This is supposed to be a family day care, and there is no professionalism warmth or familial energy at all. Save your money and your time!
