First Merchant Bank (formerly Monroe Trust) is currently providing some over the top assistance with us concerning the Coronavirus Stimulus offerings. I've been reading how many financial/lending institutions are being somewhat obtuse with their clients whom are on the same mission of keeping their companies afloat during this pandemic. We're in day two of this process so it's early to tell how this whole thing will pan out. I do have to say that Andrew at the Flat Rock First Merchants is doing everything he can to be of assistance and has provided many immediate updates. I enrolled in a student banking account with mb&t when I was young. It was a local branch that didn't charge fees to use your own money. They had options for investment and fair returns. First Merchants offers NOTHING and charges fees that are nonexistent at almost every other bank. Speaking to a teller is far and few as they've shuttered 50% of the locations and replaced them with outdated ATM machines, then charge you a fee to utilize the ATM. I'm currently in the process of closing all 3 accounts I have with this "bank". I would not recommend this bank to anyone! read more

My wife inherited an IRA from her parents held at this bank as the named beneficiary and this bank has been giving her the run around now for weeks and is refusing to release the funds to her. Various people at the bank keep saying you have to call the IRA department but can't give a name of a manager or any employee in the IRA department nor a direct phone number. I'm sure the bank had not trouble taking the money from her parents to fund the IRA. I hope someone can give us a IRA manager so she can get access to her money. read more

I have had trouble with Customer Service for several months. In the first circumstance, the automated couldn't bring up my account. I tried routing number, then account number it didn't go through. Was asked for debt card number. I typed it in 3 time but still wasn't accepted. I reported the problem when was connected to an actual person. I was trying to get personal online banking. I couldn't get to my statement. The agent was on a different page than I was. I couldn't find the page she was on. It wasn't until I hung up that I was able to find the menu that would let me rectify account. Today, 4/23/24, I got a message about the complain I had turned in on the earlier complaint report. When I tried again to contact Online Customer Service, again I couldn't get through the prompts. It kept saying to make a choice on a prompts menu. It kept cutting out so I couldn't answer it. When I was finally connected to a person they said I'd made the first call from a different phone number. That isn't possible because I only have one phone. Then I was told the computer was probably disrupted by background noise.. I told him that I typed in the information in the first place. How could that be messing up the typed information?? TO A ROBOT! I was very dissatisfied with the way both problems were dealt with. I am seriously considering changing banks. read more

Terrible software, worse customer service and just over all difficult. Couldn't verify or setup my account for an online account and access YET they gave me over a $250,000 dollars for my loan but have no way to make the payments! Started using Zelle to transfer money. Transferred $10 to ensure the process works. Transferred another $500 to same contact (was advised by bank that parameters are $600 per transaction; $900 per day). Tried to transfer remaining $90 and received error message to "start over" with transfer; did not work after numerous attempts. Contacted First Merchants through their secure messaging system. They determine after verification that this was not fraudulent activity. Their "work around" was to change a contact name to something else. Totally unacceptable; I said they should fix the problem at their end, not a "work around". read more

Customer service department through their 800 line is a completely worthless unit. If I could rate them a zero I would. They recently did an upgrade and now I cannot log into by business account through my phone though I still can through my desktop computer. After speaking with 3 different employees including one manager I was told that I would need to speak with somebody in their IT department but they would not transfer me to anyone so I am stuck with no access. My perception after having a business account with them for over 2 decades and personal accounts with them for over 4 decades is that they are willing to lose a long term customer rather than be helpful. read more

To be fair the customer service reps have usually been nice and helpful. My issue is with their app. It's just awful. Almost daily I have to set up the app it resets my preferred pin code to open app. I need to go through extra security then set up pin again. This has been an ongoing issue for some time. Most recently it wouldn't allow me to deposit a check asking for an email that it doesn't recognize. I ended up depositing it in one of my other 2 financial institutions where I never have issues. They need to hire a new technology team and focus on a better and improved APP experience. read more

First Merchants Bank Wabash, IN 46992 Walked in at 4:05pm. Waked out at 4:51pm. I went to this location to withdraw $250 from my account. After I give my withdrawal slip, ID and Bank card I am told I need approval. After 10 minutes I ask who am I waiting on. The teller said well branch manager has to approve. After 15 minutes I walk out the branch manager office. Jackie Boxel. She gets offended and said I'm with a customer you need to get out this is confidential (door was open). I said listen can you say yes or no for approval so I can leave there is a busted pipe in my house. Long story short she comes out after I had waited 40 minutes. Again this is $250. She starts. Well we just took a loss of $30k. I said I'm asking for $250. She said we have to make sure you are you...I said huh? Is that not my drivers license? She said you don't come up in the system. I said what is my address? Is that the same address on my license? Is this my account number? She said yes, but if you live in Indianapolis why would you come here to withdrawal money? Then she says let's just call Indianapolis. I said listen I been standing here for 48 minutes...in front of a dozen cameras. I have money in my account how am I stealing my own money? I was so disappointed. I do not use the race card....not my style. I use misunderstanding. But you have to confirm my identify and I'm standing in front of you with all my credentials. Then asking me why are you here if you live in Indy??? Huh...I do have an account here. You tell me what is this?????? I have never been more offended in my life. I just begged for my own money for 46 minutes. Thank God they close at 5pm or I would still be there. SN I called their call center they verified my identity over the phone ‍How!!! read more

My mom banked at First Merchants for at least 30 years. She praised them highly. Unfortunately, she passed away on May 2, 2024. My brother and I, who were thankfully on her account for emergencies, went to the Ft Wayne branch to notify the following week. We were instructed to keep $1,000 in for at least 1 month for incendentals and gave them our contact info. As she passed on the 2nd, her SS check was deposited on the 3rd. They then took her SS back on the 13th. My brother went in to close out her account to find out that this had happened and that they had been charging her account $8 a day in overdraft fees and that we owe them over $500. ! Nobody contacted us via phone or mail. Their excuse was they sent notices to her address. I stated " she's dead!" After many calls to Laura in the Ft Wayne office, she was ok with waving the fees, and Billie in the Peru office, where mom originally opened her account, she was ok with waving the fees, they had to go to their manager, who we were never able to get a name or talk to said no. I get when people intentionally make mistakes or write bad checks, that's one thing. But when we follow your Instructions and you send the notices to an address of a locked building we have no access to, and we're aware of the situation and our contact information then that's on you. So, whoever the "upper manager " is, I hope you feel good about yourself and can sleep at night. I will never recommend your bank to anyone. read more

So I opened an account with First Merchants because they are local and I was using their ATM anyway. I first tried to exchange $2000 worth of 20's for 100's and she said I need to open an account. Ok so I did. A week later I was due to go to Thailand and I thought I might take cash just in case. I withdrew $1800 and left some money in the account for a few autopay bills I have. Fast forward I am in Tokyo and can't sign in to my online account because it wants to send me an SMS for verification (Verizon phones don't work in Tokyo) So I sent them an email from the email address I have registered along with copies of my ID and other papers. They said I have to call their 1800 number for verification. So I checked my balance with my card (The 6th ATM I tried finally worked) and it says $0. I get an email this morning insisting I call their 1800 number. Worst mistake of my life! Now I will get home with no cellphone because my cellphone company tried to charge my account and it didn't work. Not only that but I had some jewelry to send to Thailand from the USA and they can't send it because my account doesn't work. If you travel outside your state don't plan on using this bank. the first thing I am going to do when I get home is go withdraw whatever is left in my account and close it. First they switch mix up personal accounts and business accounts. It took them 6 months to figure out what happened. No online access the whole time. Debit cards could not be made to work at ATMs. The branch manager lied and the submitted loan application took 3 weeks for anybody to even look at it. My online balance shows $4000 more than their hard copy and they cannot rectify the two. My carbon copy records show they owe me and they lost a deposit in the afternoon on the last day of the year. They refuse to audit the account. I'll have to sue. Nobody in the bank is trained. Not the tellers. Not the supervisors. You could spend your life on hold with a completely clueless customer service department. Every encounter is screwed up. Stop payment? They will oops, pay it. Have a ton of money in the account? They don't pay it. Debit cards are so fake looking and crappy all the print wears off in your pocket. The cards often don't work at stores. They record utility bills and others as ATM cash transactions so when you go to an ATM, your daily limit will be reduced. For the third time they have issued debit cards that do not work in ATMs. In Switzerland I had this problem and they refused to check the box on the form unless I flew back to Highland Indiana and watched them. I have commercial accounts at banks for 40 years. This is the worst one. It's really a shame. They just need to pay their people a bit more to eliminate the massive turnover rate, and train them for the job. read more

I normally don't leave Yelp reviews, but this bank is awful. Where to begin... For over 30 years, have held my personal and business accounts at Monroe Bank & Trust, which First Merchant's recently acquired. Strike 1: When First Merchants took over, they invalidated everyone's MB&T debit cards at a specific date and required them to use First Merchants issued cards. Okay, but the information I provided on one of their many "update your account!!!!" mailers wasn't in my account. I couldn't turn on my new card despite following their instructions. Strike 2: They changed the terms of my business account, will now charge $3 per month for mailed paper statements. Went to the bank, asked to have online access. This did not go well...so poorly in fact that I gave up and just agreed to the $3 fee until I moved the account elsewhere. A year later I still can't get access online because they can't seem to verify me. Strike 3: During nearly the entire spring and summer of 2020, their ATMs simply did not work. No answer to complaints, no fee reversals to use those at other banks, their huge ATM count left over from MB&T simply did not work. The lights on the rebranded ATM kiosks work, but no money for you! You'd think that were enough, but no... My parents had a trust set up at MB&T and when it came time to execute the trust, First Merchants ran away in a big hurry. Even though the value was well in excess of $1.5 million dollars, they resigned as the trustee and left us to find someone to deal with it. The trust was at MB&T for over 40 years, but that obligation from their acquisition just wasn't going to bear enough fruit, apparently. I had a money market account and MB&T never charged inactivity fees. First Merchants rolls into town and suddenly, inactivity fees start piling up. I figure I might as well close the account, so I go to a branch to do it. Money moved, receipts in hand, done deal right? Nope. They continued to send me statements on a closed account with inactivity fees. How does this happen? I had to go back to the branch to straighten it out, all because someone forgot to have me sign some paperwork. I transferred $25,000 from another institution into my First Merchant's checking account. It took FIVE business days for the money to be available. No answer other than "the money was on hold because of policy and security". Huh? You mean you do not trust Comerica, one of the largest banks in Michigan? You don't trust the account that has been sending money to this account for the last decade? There are so many options out there for banking services, First Merchants isn't one of them. read more

My first 1 star review, ever, anywhere. This bank is complete nonsense to deal with. Their phone support people are friendly, but ultimately unable to help due to the organizational structure. I needed loan/insurance support to resolve an issue with hazard insurance on a mortgage. Should have been a quick/standard process, and instead I'm hours into phone calls with no real confidence anything has been resolved. For example: I called the main customer service number, and ask for loan servicing. I'm told I can't be transferred to loan servicing, but the customer service rep. can call for me and relay the conversation. You're reading that correctly, I literally asked this go-between each of my questions, and was put on hold while he sought an answer. I had a handful of questions, so this quickly turned into a very arduous exchange simply because I could not talk to whom I needed. I soldiered through though, as I needed my issue resolved. After spending the time to get through the bulk of my questions, I'm informed I need insurance servicing instead, and just when I thought this couldn't get worse, I'm told they can't be contacted by phone, at all, even by the customer service department at the same damn bank. Now the ridiculous question relay isn't even an option, instead the customer service rep. was only able to email them on my behalf, and ask them to call me. I think I'm kidding myself if I expect a call back, a resolution, or frankly any reason to update this review. If you're given any option, no matter how much you may hate the large monolithic banks, save yourself the headache of working with this pseudo small town operation. The branch at 2517 Fort Street, Wyandotte, Michigan should be ashamed of themselves for having different standards for people of color. My sister who is a person of color and myself a Hispanic woman visited this branch on April 8, 2021. My sister went in with a check that was from this bank and proceeded to cash it and here is where it gets interesting. The amount was less than $3000.00 and the teller proceeded to request the following: 1. Please pull your mask down so I can see your face - this I believe was to verify her with her identification. I can understand this request. 2. Social security number - why was this required the amount was not enough to justify the release of this personal information. 3. Address now this is interesting, what is the reason for an address request? 4. Occupation why does the bank need to know a person's occupation???? Unfortunately, I did not go in with her to observe the transaction so when I was informed about how she was treated I said well let me see how they would respond to me. I called the branch and talked to a teller named Allyson (spelling of name may be wrong). I stated I had a check from the bank written to me in the amount of $4000.00. My question to the Allyson was what do I need to cash the check since I am not a customer. She proceeded to state just identification. So, I took this as my driver's license. Making sure I understood I repeated all I need is identification and the response was a yes. After I hung up, I waited 20 minutes and called and requested to speak to the manager. I explained what happened and proceeded to state how can there be a difference in treatment from one person to another. Of course, the variable being one who is a person of color and the other not. During this discussion with the manager, I asked about their policy on check cashing. I was told when there at a certain amount, the request for further information is required. When I again informed the manager of my interaction with Allyson on the phone and the amount I was requesting to cash was $4000.00, all I was required to do was show my identification according to Allyson. The response was that it is our policy to ask for more information at a certain amount. My reply to this was the two different amounts and the requirements for cashing the check were not the same. I further stated was this policy in writing and if so, what is the certain amount? The response was $2500.00. Making it clear that I would like to see this policy the manager never stated they actually have it in writing but they do have a policy. Shame on this bank for being blatantly discriminatory to people of color. Not a bank I would be associated with and definitely will be posting this on other social media sites. read more

I rarely write reviews because they do not move the needle regarding a Companies Policies, Processes, or Ethical Business Practices. My parents both recently passed away and I'm responsible for handling their estate and closing out accounts at all Financial Institutions. I have closed out all accounts at all Financial Institutions with the exception of First Merchants. Unfortunately, I have experience with Estate Planning since I lost my In Laws in the past 3 years. I can say, without hesitation and a clear conscious, that my experience with First Merchants has been the worst experience in my lifetime. I will not mention names or the branch(s) I'm working with but I'm still working thru paperwork, back office delays, legal review, etc... Needless to say, I will not be keeping any accounts open at First Merchants and look forward to getting this experience in my rearview mirror forever. read more

If you do the business of any kind, look to another bank. Their sign-in processes are ridiculous, they lock you out of accounts for no reason (the only suggestion I got from their support people was to make sure to log in to the system every month or so) AND THEN they make you call them to get access again. Their system does not integrate with any accounting or finance systems correctly, and they don't make it easy to download any cvs data to import into the system. Horrible. My heart sank since not only had I built a financial relationship over the years with CSBank, but a personal relationship as well. CSBank knew my family, myself and took an interest in who we were. During my mothers illness account created alerts by several transactions that stood out. We appreciate this special dedication, because its personal. We actually speak with branch manager. However, since the agreement in early 2015, Indiana-based First Merchants (NASDAQ:FRME) agreed to pay $14.5 million in cash for all outstanding shares of C Financial Corp., the parent of Dublin-based Cooper State Bank. I am a customer "Lost in a translation". Five business days later, I continue with serious banking issues, incorrect banking data via mobile, online or ATM. I've yet to speak with a knowledgeable representative and correct my banking information. Needless to say after filing compliance issues I will be visiting a new financial institution in the near future. " Excutives of small banks are citing burdensome regulation, low interest rates and improving sale prices for making the deals attractive." This is my experience dealing with First Merchants Bank in Monroe, Michigan. On December 23, 2019, my debit card with First Merchants Bank was hacked. There were several charges to my account, all from New York City, New York, for Uber Rides. I have never been to New York City, nor have I ever taken an Uber. I came in and filled out the fraud papers while it was still Monroe Bank and Trust. In March, 2020, I got a letter from First Merchants Bank that some of the charges were being disputed. They said I had to write a letter saying that these charges weren't mine, and defend myself. I have done nothing wrong. I wrote the letter, and took it into the Dundee, Michigan branch. I will say the staff there were very courteous, and made sure my letter got to the "fraud" department. I was told that I could expect to hear from someone regarding this "within 2 or 3 days." That was on March 2. I have not heard back from anyone who knows what's going on. All they will say is that they have received my rebuttal letter, and that it isn't resolved yet. This morning I was told that it could take up to 100 days to get it cleared up. My question is this: Why isn't First Merchants Bank defending their customer, me? Why aren't they restoring the money to my account and taking this fraud charge on themselves and dealing with it? The people I talk to when I call are always courteous, and they TRY to be helpful, but they just don't know anything. I have asked to be directly connected to the "fraud" department, but was told this isn't possible. I'm beyond frustrated and would not recommend First Merchants Bank to anyone. read more

I've spent hours on the phone trying to get my PMI removed because my LTV has fallen to under 80%. Seems easy enough but not a single person could tell me how PMI actually works. I got a letter denying my request, then had to email the letter back to them to prove I received it. The letter stated I had to be below 80% of the "value of the property at the time of the loan." I am currently at 79% but they kept telling me it could not be removed until I was below 80% of the loan amount. Nope, that is wrong...and it contradicts their own letter. Five phone calls later, a CSR tells me that because I have a Freddie Mac loan, it now has to be at 75%. Again, this is not right. First Merchant seems to just make up their own rules in an effort to take more money from their customers. Would definitely not recommend this place to anyone. read more

I have had more problems with First Merchants in a month than I have had with banks ever. -First they had us verify our contact info, which we did. When the merger was complete, suddenly the contact info is wrong. -Second, if you want to use an app, good luck figuring out who gets the app as you can only have one app per account. -Third, you cannot us Chrome because there is a known glitch. I've banked with First Merchants in Munster, Indiana for 4 years. A few months ago, my account fell below the minimum and they charged me $20 every month. My mistake for not looking online (I do paperless) so I didn't catch their charge for "maintenance". It would have been nice if they would've let me know by phone, email or text. Once I caught it, I closed my account. Now I get text alerts EVERY day at 4:30 in the morning that my account has went below the minimum. I've called and asked them to stop but it hasn't yet. Why couldn't they have sent me these text alerts before taking $20 from my account every month? I will never bank with them again. read more

WHY I WILL BE SWITCHING TO A NEW BANK (feel free to skim or read in more detail): 1) UNACCEPTABLE CUSTOMER SERVICE (there are too many details to cover, but overall, I have been lied to several times, most recently by Kris at Sawmill and Brent from Customer Service). As of late, Brent would not fix an issue when I called in, upset because I could not access my funds over the weekend (a big deal). Instead, he told me he had done all he could (which I later discovered was a lie) and directed me to an automated number he promised would not require my pin (it did). This resulted in 15+ ADDITIONAL minutes to resolve the issue with my sick one year old son in tow (who was growing less patient) when he could have helped me the first time, before forcing me to pull my car over and follow each pointless automated step, only to have to call again-- to be redirected to... wait for it (oh, and I did)... him, to finally hear "okay, I'll go ahead and update it myself," something he should have done initially, instead of telling me the faulty automated number was in his words, "the best I can do." While helping or not helping the first time had no impact on his day, it substantially impacted mine (significantly delaying my schedule, again with a one year old in tow--again, when he could have just fixed it). Brent mentioned he has been with this bank for over 10 years--a clear indication of FM's attitude toward customer service (note the practice of pushing people who are calling because they have already been let down off onto an automated system when they are able to help people themselves, let alone before ensuring the automated system will actually work). As a former customer service manager, I have been appalled by the staff training (and monitoring) at this bank and would hate to think of how little they must pay their employees, who sadly (for all involved), are not trained to accommodate customers. 2) INCONVENIENT HOURS (I loved CS Bank, which was taken over by this circus-- with among its several other issues, really crappy hours). CS Bank was open 7am to 7pm-- 7 days a week (a key reason I chose to bank with them). First Merchants? 9am (really) to 5pm (again-- you read that correctly) M-Th, until 6pm on Friday (gee, thanks--it used to be 7pm) and until noon on Saturdays. They are closed on Sundays. What this Means: If they unexpectedly freeze your account due to an alleged breach without notification and you do not realize this until Saturday after 12pm, guess who is without funds for the rest of the weekend? That's right-- you. Need to get gas? To go to the hospital? To buy baby food or Tylenol for your toddler, who has a fever? Too bad. Oh and wait until you call in on Monday (at 9am) to resolve this unacceptable system flaw--you'll just love their "customer service." This leads me to a quick question for FM Bank: how many former CS Bank clients do you really expect to stay with you? A re-frame of this question: So how long do you think it will be before you go out of business with these new hours and poor standards for customer service? 3) HIDDEN FEES (Thanks for sending my checks to the wrong address and charging $8 to fix your mistake--I should have stopped banking with you then but gave you the benefit of a doubt). 4) POOR COMMUNICATION (Twice within a year, my card has been de-activated without any notice beyond alleged snail mail I never received when they have my phone number and email address, both due to no fault of my own, but to their super customer-friendly 'security measures'). You can imagine how much fun this has been. Again, thanks, FM. In sum, if you have extra money to donate to this bank for THEIR mistakes, extra time to help them fix THEIR issues with ensuring the proper functioning of your debit card (kind of a big deal), go with this bank, particularly if you are available to resolve their unanticipated (yet costly) mistakes from 9am to 5pm on weekdays. As a college instructor, I have managed to do this, but for most working Americans, this is out of the question. Bottom line: this bank could not care less about its clients and too many other banks can beat its poor policies and hours to justify doing business with them-- just look at Chase or Huntington. But don't take my word for it; check out their other reviews-- I am merely one of several customers they have repeatedly failed and will subsequently lose. read more

First Merchants took over Arlington Bank about 6 months ago. Arlington Bank was a wonderful local bank. The only positive about the new ownership is that they kept the friendly tellers. They screwed up my account and erroneously charged a dormant fee to my account. I needed to close the account, and I was informed that I wouldn't get the charge back because I was closing the account. I received my final statement, and they refunded the fee. The only reason I'm giving this bank one star is that I am unable to give it zero stars. Nothing but frustration with these people. I closed my checking account and they keep sending me overdraft statement. They have NO customer service. read more

horrible horrible customer service. tonya coleman and michael murphy in the private wealth advisor department at the downtown monroe michigan branch are horribly rude and totally uncaring. they were not helpful at all with my mom's conservator account. they did not have the decency, professionalism or common courtesy to ask about putting our dad's name on mom's account as beneficiary. when she passed away tragically and unexpectedly; we are now going to have to deal with the additional nightmare of going through probate to get mom's funds out of this account because of their horrible lack of caring or basic decent human compassion. also tonya coleman refused to pay a $58.00 at&t phone bill for mom because she didn't believe that i said it was for mom's phone. you can tell what a business is like by how they treat their insignificant customers. i'm sure if i was a politician or a millionaire it would be a different story which is shameful and disgusting on their part. they say all their customers matter--what a lie. i would never in a million years recommend this bank. i only wish i could give them a much lower review--like a negative thousand; which would still be more than they deserve. they do not deserve your business. read more
