I just wanted to share one of my experiences with a local handyman in the Shenango Valley. I…read morecurrently do not live in the valley but my parents still do, I'm 28 hours away (in Austin, TX) and have really been struggling to keep the maintenance up on my parents house from so far away. I was referred to Adam Kahl and his company Kahl Remodeling. First off, Adam seems to do just about anything, he can build a garage, put up fences (which I had him do for my parents) to building handicap ramps (which he is also going to do for us), windows and more. Being 28 hours away and entrusting my elderly parents into someone's care was a concern for me, Adam did an incredible job on the fence, I was beyond impressed. He is fast, trustworthy, more than fair in his pricing and goes above and beyond to do the best. I was so impressed with his service I felt the need to write this review; he is the man to go to for construction in Mercer County. I can't say enough about him and I plan on using him from now on for all of the repairs/remodeling on my parents house. Had to share! good help is hard to find!

I posted an ad on the local flea market looking for someone to remove and repair our exterior door…read morethat was stuck shut. Adam responded and gave me a quote. Once he got here it took him 6 hours to fix our mess because he had to remove and replace deck boards and everything else in sub zero temperatures. When he was all done he stuck by his original quote which was ludacris to me after all his time here. He is very meticulous and neat. You won't find a more honest contractor, believe me we've been taken by a few before. I highly recommend him!

TRAINWRECK! Beware of this incompetent contractor. I have two houses for fix up this year, a…read moredozen contractors worked with across general, construction, HVAC, minor repair, plumber, and electrical and only one issue - This train wreck person. He has only one other review (yelp) I could find and it is similar to this disaster. The issues with Dobay: 1. Time line will be committed to verbally. However, when agreement came, it has small print that says he can do it when he feels like it. He committed to two weeks, worse case three weeks to complete job, but contract was worded that there was no commitment. I finally fired him after 9 weeks when it became clear his work was not only unlikely to be never really completed, but with the little amount completed, it was completely unacceptable. 2. He committed to match old style of the porch he was rebuilding. He was not close in any way. Frame work was terrible. Cement base crooked. Foundation right on the ground. Cuts did not match up with many gaps. Floor was uneven. Overhangs in some places, undercuts in others. He did it how he felt doing it and It was awful! 3. The materials used were not appropriate for outdoor use. He used indoor materials for an exterior porch. The three new contractors I brought in to bid on the job each were shocked how bad it was. All pointed to same issues with Dobay construction. The whole job must be ripped out and started from scratch which finally is happening months later. Small claims court gave partial reimbursement on what I gave him up front, but not full amount back I paid him. Lowest possible score. Sign at your own risk.

My husband hired Dobay Construction in July 2018 to attach a carport to his existing one car…read moregarage. He had several quotes ranging from $2200-$2600 from other contractors. Mr. Dobay offered to do the job for $1900 if my husband paid cash. He was very friendly and personable and assured us that he would secure the proper permit(s), build the structure to code and cover the carport with a beautiful metal roof that matched the color of the garage. He didn't show up to start the project. No phone call to explain and it took days for my husband to get a return call. When we finally did hear from him, he told my husband that he was having trouble obtaining a permit and that it would "take some time." One time he even stated that he was right in the zoning officer's office as they were speaking and everything was fine. My husband went to the zoning office and found out that he had not applied for a permit at all. Mr. Dobay apologized and explained that he was running behind on his larger jobs and that he'd get everything done right away. He showed up sporadically all summer (blaming bad weather even on beautiful days) and his "crew" consisted of a young lady he introduced as his daughter, who scrambled to help him finish the roof before it started to snow. She was clearly inexperienced and put the nail holes all through the custom metal roof panels because she wasn't able to find the beams, so the roof of the carport leaks. We finally thought the job was complete in early November 2018 and my husband invited his friend (who happened to work for a licensed contractor) over to see his new carport. He immediately noticed that the carport was not properly secured to the garage and told us it wasn't up to code because the first heavy snowfall would cause it to collapse. My husband called the city inspector, who came out and immediately and attached a violation notice on the carport and said that we had 6 months to have it built to code or it would have to be torn down. The inspector also informed us that the carport was built right into a city "right of way" access area and that there was no way the contractor would not be aware of that if he obtained the proper permits, as required. Mr. Dobay said that the work was impossible to complete because of the winter weather and assured us he would come back first thing in the spring to correct the issues. He did not contact us at all or return any phone calls we made until we sent him a certified letter on AUGUST 2019 informing him that we would take legal action against him if he did not contact us to finish the job. His wife called my husband the day they received the certified letter and was very rude, but said he would be out the next day to start working on the repairs. The weather was fine, but the next day was actually a week and a half later. He spent one afternoon doing the work to properly secure the carport to the garage, but then we never heard from him again. He would not return any of my husband's calls after that and my husband was diagnosed with cancer in October and passed away 32 days later. I've heard that Mr. Dobay does very good work on kitchen and bath remodels, although many others have since told us that they had the same problem with his unreliability) and he did admit to my husband that building a carport was beyond his area of expertise, but that is no excuse for his refusal to call people and show up to do the work. Please be careful if you are considering using DOBAY CONSTRUCTION and if you do, make sure you include a "TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE" clause in your contract!

AVOID AVOID AVOID. INCOMPETENT OR FRAUDULENT…read more My father, Parker, and I contacted this business in September 2021 to have a chimney inspection performed at a house we had recently purchased. They came, scoped the chimney, and told us that the liner needed a complete replacement. The owner even went so far as to claim there had been a "massive" fire in the chimney and that the lining was cracked. He provided "evidence" of this by showing my father images of the inside of the chimney as he scoped it. Of course, to an untrained eye, anything (a gap between the liner pieces, etc) can look like a catastrophic issue. The Chimney Clinic quoted us $10,113.00 to repair our fireplace. I had thought this was high at the time, but decided to trust the "judgement" of the "expert". Given the extremely high cost we decided not to proceed at that point in time. Thinking the fireplace was lost, we paid $600 for an electric insert, $400 to have an outlet run so we could plug the insert in, and $300 to have the old gas insert and plumbing removed. Earlier this month, I had another company come and examine my chimney. Absolutely NOTHING was wrong with the chimney. It didn't even need cleaned. I was shocked, until he informed me of a local company that has been going around town providing inaccurate estimates to unsuspecting consumers. Thinking that this man may be biased or outright wrong, I hired ANOTHER company to come and inspect the chimney. Again, they said there is NOTHING wrong with my chimney. Not only that, they said the quote provided to me was "WAY TOO MUCH for a chimney repair". They performed some small repairs to the firebox and provided me with a certificate of inspection. The Chimney Clinic are either completely incompetent or outright fraudulent. Even their Google reviews appear to be fabricated as there are two different pages for the same business, listed under the same phone number. One has 1.8 stars, the other 5.0. How strange.... I have half a mind to take this charlatan to small claims court, but frankly, it's not worth the trouble. Take your business elsewhere and DO NOT, under any circumstance, trust this firm. I hope one day the owner is held to account for this.
