My experience with Lower Mortgage was easily one of the worst customer service and lending experiences I have ever been a part of. The entire process felt extremely non-transparent from beginning to end. I was provided a pre-approval letter that ultimately felt meaningless. In my experience, it seemed like the pre-approval was issued before they had properly reviewed the information necessary to determine whether I could actually qualify. As a self-employed borrower, many of the issues that eventually became problems should have been identified and discussed at the very beginning of the process, not approximately two weeks before closing. What made this even more frustrating is that Lower had already sent me loan disclosures, which gave me every reason to believe the loan was moving forward toward closing. To receive disclosures and continue progressing through the mortgage process, only to then be told roughly two weeks before closing that the loan could not be completed because of issues that should have been identified much earlier, is unacceptable. My personal loan officer then quit in the middle of the closing process, which made an already disorganized situation even worse. Communication was poor, answers were inconsistent, and I repeatedly felt like the people handling my loan either did not understand what was happening with my file or were not being completely transparent with me. I also dealt with Josh, a VP with the company, and was extremely disappointed with the level of customer service and communication I received. For someone in a leadership position, I expected significantly more accountability, urgency, and clarity. Being told that I could not close approximately two weeks before closing because of issues that could have been addressed much earlier was completely unacceptable. By that point, a buyer has already invested significant time, money, planning, and emotional energy into purchasing a home. The entire process felt very misleading and, from my perspective, the way everything was handled felt extremely scam-like. I have since spoken with other highly regarded lenders who have expressed serious concerns about my experience and how the loan was handled. I felt like I was given inaccurate information throughout the process, and I completely lost confidence in the knowledge, communication, and professionalism of the people handling my loan. Please do your research before using Lower Mortgage. Get additional opinions, shop your loan with multiple lenders, and especially if you are self-employed, make sure your income and documentation have actually been thoroughly reviewed before relying on a pre-approval letter or assuming you are on track to close. Save yourself the headache. I wish I had gone somewhere else from the beginning.
